Christmas cookies | christmas party favors

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Christmas cookies are traditionally sugar cookies (though other flavors may be used based on family traditions and individual preferences) cut into various shapes related to Christmas. In the United States, since the 1930s, children have left cookies and milk on a table for Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, though many people simply consume the cookies themselves. The cookies are often cut into such shapes as those of candy canes, reindeer, and holly leaves. Oreos are also popular.

Groomsman | The Wedding Present

Thursday, June 26th, 2008
This article refers to the wedding participant. A Groomsman is also a type of lawn ornament.

In a North American/Australian or British wedding a groomsman or usher is one of the (usually) male attendants to the bridegroom in a wedding ceremony. Usually the groom selects his closest friends and/or relatives to serve as a groomsmen, and it is considered an honor to be selected. From his groomsmen, the groom chooses one to serve as best man.
In a typical “Anglosphere” white wedding, the duties of a groomsman typically include some or all of the following:

  • helping the best man plan the bachelor party(U.S.)/Stag Night(U.K)/Buck’s Night(Aus.) for the groom
  • ushering guests to their seats before the ceremony
  • escorting the bridesmaids down the aisle during the ceremony and reception
  • giving speeches and toasts (however, this duty is usually performed by the best man)
  • and sometimes dancing with bridesmaids and other single female guests at the reception

The groom may also designate other male friends and relatives to act as ushers, whose main task is ushering guests to their seats before the ceremony.

In a military officers wedding, the role of groomsman is replaced by Swordsmen of the Sword Honor Guard. They are usually picked as close personal friends of the groom who have served with him/her. Their role includes forming the traditional sword arch for the married couple and guests to walk through.

Gifts

To show appreciation and gratitude, the bridegroom will traditionally purchase gifts for his best man and groomsmen. These gifts are generally known as groomsmen gifts. Groomsmen gifts serve as both a thank you to all the groomsmen or ushers who take the time (and spend the money) to be a part of your wedding celebration. Groomsmen gifts are also a way to commemorate the special day for years to come.

Traditionally, the bridegroom will give a gift to both his father, the bride’s father and the ringbearer.

Simon Smith | band The Wedding Present

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

Simon Smith has been the drummer with several British Indie rock bands, most notably The Wedding Present from Leeds.

Contents

Career

Simon Smith started out briefly as a member of The Chorus with Peter Solowka, who also became a member of The Wedding Present. The Chorus released tracks on the AAZ record label from 1983 to 1985 including the 7″ double A side single “These Stones” / “Diamond Mine”.

Simon left The Chorus to join stable mates The Sinister Cleaners in 1985, replacing the drum machine that had featured on their earlier releases. He released 3 12″ EPs with The Sinister Cleaners and toured the UK and Europe with them from 1985 to 1987. Simon left The Sinister Cleaners to join The Wedding Present as drummer in 1987, working briefly with Sinister Cleaner Len Liggins and Pete Solowka in The Wedding Present offshoot band The Ukrainians. Simon, along with Keith Gregory, Paul Dorrington (both ex-Wedding Present) and Jaqui Cohen (ex-Dustdevils), started a new group called Cha Cha Cohen in 1994. Simon split his time between Cha Cha Cohen and The Wedding Present until 1997, when Wedding Present singer / guitarist David Gedge took a break in order to start a new group, Cinerama. Cha Cha Cohen went on to make two albums on the Glasgow-based Chemikal Underground Records label, and, thanks to their help, Simon began tour managing for a living.

Simon also played gigs and recorded with Beachbuggy, brainchild of former Wedding Present bass player and guitarist Jack Straker.

In 2005, David Gedge and Wedding Present guitarist Simon Cleave began using the name The Wedding Present again but Simon Smith was not asked to joing the band’s new line-up.

The One Where Ross and Rachel Take a Break | Ho! Ho! Ho! Who’d

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

“The One Where Ross and Rachel Take a Break” is the fifteenth episode of season three of the television situation comedy Friends.

First aired: February 13, 1997

Plot

Phoebe decides to give free massages outside of the United Nations building, and meets a foreign diplomat named Sergei. Trouble is, Sergei doesn’t speak English, so his translator Mischa keeps “getting in the way.” Desperate for some alone time with Sergei but still have a translator around, Phoebe convinces Monica to come to dinner with them as Mischa’s date. Mischa and Monica hit it off so well that Mischa keeps forgetting to translate for Sergei, and starts fighting with Sergei. He eventually quits and takes Monica along with him to use his diplomatic coupons at the Rainbow Room. Phoebe then tries to teach Sergei English - with minimal success.

Rachel has to cancel on her and Ross’s one-year anniversary plans since she has to work late hours - as she had to every night for two weeks. Ross cannot understand why Rachel cannot make time for him. He surprises her at the office with a complete picnic set. As Ross starts a small fire on Rachel’s desks, she angrily orders him to wait for her at home. Later at the apartment Ross complains about Rachel working late hours. Also, he is afraid of Rachel having an affair with her co-worker Mark. Rachel, however, is not willing to deal with Ross’s jealousy and to have the same fight over and over again. She suggests taking a break. Ross thinks she wants to stop fighting and suggests getting frozen yogurt. But Rachel tells him she wants to take a break from their relationship, which leads Ross to leave.

Chandler and Joey get invited to a club by Chloe, the hot girl at the Xerox place whom they are both trying to hit upon. She invites them to come see her co-worker Isaac the DJ, and also makes a joke about they all having a three-some. Joey and Chandler then set up some loose “ground rules” in the event that she should agree to a threesome with them. A distraught Ross ends up meeting them at the club. He feels bad about his fight, and calls Rachel to apologize - but assumes the worst when he hears Mark (who’d gone over to comfort her) in the background. Chloe, who has always admired Ross, asks him to dance, and they end up kissing.
