Main Street (Ottawa) | down main

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

Main Street (Ottawa Road #72) is a major road in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Despite the name, the street isn’t Ottawa’s “main street”, as one would argue that that title would be held by Bank Street. Main Street however is the “main street” for the community of Ottawa East. It was originally the main street of Archville, Ontario, which later amalgamated with Ottawa in 1907. At that time Ottawa had no other street called Main and the name was not changed. Main Street begins at Colonel By Drive near the community of Sandy Hill and runs in a straight line south until it bends near the Rideau River and becomes Smyth Road. Main Street is home to the Cuban embassy, Immaculata High School (Ottawa) and Saint Paul University. For most of its length it runs parallel with the Rideau River and the Rideau Canal, being about halfway between them.

Star Trails | Hit Parade

Monday, May 21st, 2007

Star Trails is a 2004 album by Spirit of the West. It was their first album of new material since Weights and Measures in 1997, and their first for independent label MapleMusic Recordings.

“July” was the album’s first single, and the band’s first significant radio hit since “Tell Me What I Think” (from the 1995 album Two Headed).

“Come Back Oscar” is a tribute to Calgary musician Oscar Lopez, a friend of the band’s who had been absent from the folk festival circuit for several years due to a battle with depression. In what several music critics described as one of 2004’s most thrilling moments in Canadian music, Lopez joined the band at the Calgary and Edmonton folk festivals in July to perform the song. According to one writer for the Calgary Sun, “if there was a dry eye in the house, it was glass.”

“King of Scotland”, the album’s second single, is about Idi Amin, who once proclaimed himself king of Scotland after becoming infatuated with the country on a state visit to Great Britain.

Tinsel | Christmas

Monday, May 21st, 2007

Tinsel is a thin metallic strip typically made of plastic for use for Christmas decoration, particularly on Christmas trees. Tinsel is different than Garland, which is “Tinsel on a rope”. It was invented in Germany in 1610, and was originally made of shredded silver.<ref></ref>

Tinsel used to include lead, which caused the strands to hang better from the branches. This was eventually removed due to safety concerns.

Snow Foundation | Wishes Snow on

Sunday, May 20th, 2007

The Snow Foundation is a non-profit ogranisation operating in Canberra. It was established to assist those in need in the Canberra community whose needs are not covered by government sources.

History

The Snow Foundation is a response to the long association the Snow family has had with the Canberra region, dating back to 1926 when E.R. Snow, the founders’ grandfather, came to Canberra to establish the Capital’s first general store.

The Foundation is the creation of brothers Terry and George Snow who set it up in 1990 with the aim of helping those individuals and organisations that freely gave their time to help the less fortunate live fulfilling lives.Starting with an initial contribution of $1 million, the Foundation has provided financial help to a diverse range of organisations throughout Canberra and the surrounding region.

In 1997 Terry added a further $500,000 to the Foundation, and in 2005 added a further $1 million to enable it to maintain and set up further activities. Since then, he has given substantive donations to the Foundation, meaning the capital value of the Foundation exceeded $3 million in 1997.

In the 15 years since it was established, The Snow Foundation has reached out to help more than 80 different organisations and individuals. The Foundation does not give ‘blanket’ donations but help with the funding of a specific program/treatment/equipment.

Wienie (Disney) | Walt Disney

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007
This is about the theme park term. For its slang variations, see weenie, wiener or weiner.

A wienie, also called a visual magnet, is a term used by Walt Disney Imagineering for a visual element in a theme park which can be seen from a distance and which serves to draw a guest further in.

The term, introduced to Disney by Walt Disney himself, originates from the cliché that a carrot (or other food) held in front of a horse makes the horse walk forward. In the Disneyland park, the primary wienie is Sleeping Beauty Castle. People that arrive at that point will then see other Wienies like the Tomorrowland rocketship or Frontierland’s Mark Twain, which will in turn guide them towards further attractions.

John Reid (music) | performed by Elton

Monday, May 14th, 2007

John Reid is a Scottish manager and music industry figure currently living and working in Australia.

Between 1975 and 1978, Reid was the manager of British rock group Queen and Kevin Ayers. For some 25 years he was the manager of Elton John, but their relationship ended with acrimonious legal action in 2000 [1] over a leaked letter from his accountants detailing Elton’s spending which was found by Benjamin Pell and published in the Daily Mirror.

Reid was known for his sometimes uncontrollable temper, which landed him in jail several times. He has gotten into many highly publicized fights, verbal and physical, with members of the press in an effort to defend clients such as Elton John.

In Australia, he is best known for being a judge on the local version of The X Factor.

Reid is openly homosexual and had a long-term relationship with Elton John.

New Fraternity Party | Party

Sunday, May 13th, 2007

The New Fraternity Party (新党友愛 Shinto Yuai) was a Japanese political party that existed in early 1998. It was founded by Diet members (almost from Former Democratic Socialist Party) that broke away from the New Frontier Party in January 1998. It was a liberal and democratic Socialist party espousing various left of centre causes.

The name has its origins in the Taisho era democracy and Labour movements, which used the word yuai (fraternity) as a motto. The party also claimed that yuai had a phonetic similarity to the English “you and I”, representing their hope of cooperating with ordinary Japanese.

The party was led by Lower House member Nakano Kansei, now a member of the Democratic Party .

In April 1998, the New Fraternity Party merged with the Good Governance Party, the Democratic Party of Japan (1996) and the Democratic Reform Party(民主改革連合, Minshu-Kaikaku-Rengo) to form the Democratic Party .
