Little Christmas | Christmas

Friday, June 15th, 2007

Little Christmas, or Nollaig Bheag in the Irish language, is one of the traditional names in Ireland for January 6, more commonly known in the rest of the world as the Epiphany. It is so called because it was, until the adoption of the Gregorian calendar, the day on which Christmas Day was celebrated. It is the traditional end of the Christmas season and the last day of the Christmas holidays for both Primary and Secondary schools.

The name Little Christmas is also found in Slovenian (mali božič).

It is also known as Nollaig na mBan (Women’s Christmas), so called because of the tradition (still very strong in Cork, though only just surviving in the rest of the country) of Irish men taking on all the household duties on that day and giving their spouses a day off. Most women will either hold parties or go out to celebrate the day with their friends, sisters, mothers, aunts etc. Bars and restaurants have a near 100% female clientele on this night. Children often buy presents for their mothers and grandmothers and it closely resembles Mother’s Day in this respect.

XCBL | The Business

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

xCBL is a collection of XML specifications (both DTD and XML schema) for use in e-business. It is maintained by Commerce One Inc.

History

xCBL was originally called Common Business Library (CBL). The xCBL standardization began in 1997.
This led to the creation of xCBL 2.0 which covered 12 different business document specifications, mainly meant for use in business-to-business (B2B) procurement. xCBL 2.0 was mainly based on existing Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) standards.

xCBL 3.0 contained several new business specifications and categories.
xCBL 3.5 (October 2001) contained nine new business documents. OASIS used this version as the starting point for defining business documents in Universal Business Language (UBL).
xCBL 4.0 (March 2003) is the latest version of xCBL. It consists of 44 business documents in eight categories. It also introduces the use of XML schema.

Past continuous | Present

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

Past continuous is used to describe actions and states continued in the past period of time.

The construction of a past continuous is similar to the present continuous tense, be it that it has a past simple form of ‘to be’ instead of a present simple form preceding the present participle.

An example of a past continuous inside a sentence would be ‘I was painting the house.’ There’s the past simple form of ‘to be’ in the finite position (was), with the present participle of ‘to paint’ (painting) following it.

For the 1971 novel by Yaakov Shabtai see Past Continuous (novel)

Parade of horribles | Parade

Monday, June 11th, 2007

A parade of horribles is both a literal parade and a rhetorical device.

As a literal parade

“Parade of horribles” originally referred to a literal parade of people wearing comic and grotesque costumes, rather like the Philadelphia Mummers Parade. It was a traditional feature of Fourth-of-July parades in parts of the U. S. in the nineteenth century. A 1926 newspaper article about July Fourth celebrations in the White Mountains of New Hampshire notes

Old-time celebrations are to be held tomorrow at Littleton, Lancaster, Colebrook, and Conway, with all the usual features of street parades of horribles and grotesques, brass bands, decorated automobiles and vehicles, exhibitions by fire departments, basket picnics in convenient groves…<ref>”Mountain Season Early. Camp and Stream Bring Many Visitors to New Hampshire Despite Coolness.” The New York Times, July 4, 1926, p. X8</ref>

As a rhetorical device

A parade of horribles is also a rhetorical device whereby the speaker argues against taking a certain course of action by listing a number of extremely undesirable events which will ostensibly result from the action. Its power lies in the emotional impact of the unpleasant predictions; however, a parade of horribles is a logical fallacy to the extent that:

  • The “horribles” are not likely to occur as a result of the action, an appeal to probability,
  • The argument relies solely on the emotional impact of the “horribles”, an appeal to emotion, or
  • The “horribles” are not actually bad.

A parade of horribles is a type of hyperbole because it exaggerates the negative results of the action. It is similar to a slippery slope argument, but not identical. Whereas a slippery slope argument argues that, “If we do this, then the next thing we do will be this,” a parade of horribles argues that, “If we do this, then ultimately all these horrible things will happen.”

Spanish Main | down main

Sunday, June 10th, 2007

This article is about the Caribbean coast. For the film, please see The Spanish Main.

The Spanish Main was the mainland coast of the Spanish Empire around the Caribbean. It included Florida, Mexico, Central America and the north coast of South America. In time it became a general term for the seaways around the Spanish possessions in the Caribbean.

From the 16th to the 18th century the Spanish Main was the point of departure for enormous wealth in the form of gold, silver, gems, spices, hardwoods, hides and other riches.

Major loading ports were Cartagena de Indias in New Granada, Porto Bello on the Isthmus of Darien and Veracruz in New Spain (with wares brought by the Manila Galleons transported overland from Acapulco), and from there they were shipped to Spain by the famous Spanish treasure fleets.

This made the Spanish Main a haunt of pirates and privateers, and gave the name a notorious and romantic allure.

Zvakwana | appears on

Friday, June 8th, 2007

Zvakwana is an underground movement in Zimbabwe, that came to light in 2004. Its name means “enough is enough” in the Shona language, and in Ndebele it translates to Sokwanele. (Sokwanele is also a part of the movement but appears to be more occupied with information dissemination).

Zvakwana appears to be responsible for clandestinely distributing resistance messages, graffiti, CDs of music, and condoms featuring their logo, a Z on a yellow background. They also run a website which the Zimbabwean government is trying to block from internet service providers.

Opposition party Movement for Democratic Change says they have no connection to Zvakwana, but share its values and support its efforts.
