Tree topper | Christmas

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

A tree topper is a decorative star, angel or other item which is placed on the crown of a Christmas tree. The most popular tree topper is the angel, followed by the star. If viewed in a Christian context, the tree topper usually signifies the Christmas Star (Star of Bethlehem) or angelic hosts which proclaimed the news of the birth of Jesus to the world on the eve of his birth. Modern pagan homes celebrate the winter solstice, which falls close to Christmas, by decorating an evergreen tree as a symbol of continuing life, but make an effort to decorate it with non-Christian symbols and often choose tree toppers representing the sun.

War Veteran | appears

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

War Veteran is a science fiction short story by Philip K. Dick. First published in If magazine in March 1955.

The plot concerns an old man who appears to have travelled back in time from a future in which Earth has lost a devastating war to its own Martian and Venusian colonies. The man turns out to be a synthetic human, designed to trick the Earth people into believing they could never win the war, forcing them to make peace. The android of the story is a forerunner of the kind (named replicant in the film Blade Runner) that appears in Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

This story shows how pent up racial tension is a dangerous tool. And as always with Dick, not everything is what it seems to be.

Marchosias | appears on the

Friday, September 21st, 2007

In demonology, Marchosias is a powerful Great Marquis of Hell, commanding thirty legions of demons. He is a strong and excellent fighter and very reliable to the conjurer, giving true answers to all questions. Marchosias hoped after one thousand and two hundred years to return to heaven with the non-fallen angels, but he is deceived in that hope. He is the supposed creator of Baltzegaurd, an immensly powerful creature neither demon or angelic but simply known as a ‘Wanderer of the Worlds.’

He is depicted as a wolf, a she-wolf, or an ox, that under request changes shape into a man.

The name Marchosias comes from Late Latin ‘marchio’, marquis.

Other spellings: Marchocias.

In Modern Culture

  • Marchosias appears in Alan Moore’s comic book series Promethea where he is summoned with the demon Andras by the magician Benny Solomon to put a hit out on the title character. Promethea defeats him and Andras at a fight at a nightclub. Later in the series, Benny Solomon summons the entire Ars Goetia to attack Promethea, and Marchosias appears again.

Event flag | event

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

An event flag is a process synchronization primitive in the OpenVMS operating system. It has two possible states, set or cleared. The following basic primitive operations are provided:

  • Set event flag ($SETEF)
  • Clear event flag ($CLREF)
  • Wait for event flag ($WAITFR)–if the flag was clear, this would make the process wait until it was set. If the flag was already set, this would immediately return, leaving the flag set.

Additional synchronization operations are:

  • $WFLOR–wait for any of the specified event flags to be set.
  • $WFLAND–wait for all the specified event flags to be set.

Event flags can be either local (per-process) or common (accessible by more than one process). Each process has its own set of 64 local flags, numbered 0-63. It is also possible to associate the process with up to 2 sets of common event flags. These come in sets of 32 each, and the process can assign them numbers 64-95 or 96-127. They come into existence when the first process associates with them, and disappear when the last process removes its association.

Every potentially time-consuming asynchronous system call (QIO among others) includes an argument specifying the number of an event flag to set on completion.

Tinsel | Christmas

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

Tinsel is a thin metallic strip typically made of plastic for use for Christmas decoration, particularly on Christmas trees. Tinsel is different than Garland, which is “Tinsel on a rope”. It was invented in Germany in 1610, and was originally made of shredded silver.<ref></ref>

Tinsel used to include lead, which caused the strands to hang better from the branches. This was eventually removed due to safety concerns.

Plot summary

Kat Ellis (Debra Messing) is a single New Yorker who returns to her parents’ house in London to be the maid of honor at her younger sister’s (Amy Adams) wedding. She is dismayed to discover that the best man is none other than her former fiancé, who unceremoniously dumped her two years ago. Anxious about confronting him and eager to impress him, she hires debonair male escort Nick Mercer (Dermot Mulroney) to pose as her boyfriend.

Kat intends to make her former flame, Jeffrey (Jeremy Sheffield) jealous, but her plan backfires when Nick convinces everyone, including her, that they’re madly in love. Along the way, Kat discovers that her younger sister, Amy, slept with Jeffrey while they were still together. This affair was the reason why Jeffrey dumped Kat because he fancied himself in love with Amy. Amy confesses her guilt to her fiancé Ed (Jack Davenport) just before the church ceremony. However, Ed decides that he loves Amy more than he is angry and they end up getting hitched after all. Kat and Nick end up together.

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

Small business software has been for many years any software that a small business owner could appropriate to get jobs done. Over the past twenty years, however, the most pressing issue for small businesses has been to organize their financial records mostly due to government requirements in tax reporting. Therefore, the only software that has specifically been written for small business has been financial software that has found a market in the small business segment and overflowed to the home financial organization market as well.
