Champernowne constant | Be Continued and The

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

In mathematics, the Champernowne constant C10 is a certain real number, named after mathematician D. G. Champernowne. It is a simple number to construct, which has some important properties.

Contents

Normality

Say we have some real number x. We call x normal in base b if the probability of finding some digit string among the digits of x is the same as if we were to search amongst some random sequence of digits. See normal number for a more detailed explanation.

If we denote a digit string as [a0,a1,…], then, in base ten, we would expect strings [0],[1],[2],…,[9] to occur 1/10 of the time, strings [0,0],[0,1],…,[9,8],[9,9] to occur 1/100 of the time, and so on, in a normal number.

Given this definition, is it possible to construct a normal number? Naturally, one would consider concatenating strings [0],[1],[2],…,[9], which would satisfy the first condition, then strings [0,0],[0,1],…,[9,8],[9,9], which would satisfy the second condition, and so on.

This is precisely how the Champernowne constant is defined.

In base 10, we have:

<math>C_{10} = 0.12345678910111213141516\dots</math>

This is clearly normal in base ten. We can create Champernowne constants that are normal in other bases, similarly, for example:

<math>C_2 = 0.1\,10\,11\,100\,101\,110\,111\dots {}_2</math>
<math>C_3 = 0.1\,2\,10\,11\,12\,20\,21\,22\dots {}_3</math>

and so on. The sequence of binary digits in <math>C_2</math> is known as the Champernowne sequence. [1]

Another way of understanding the normality of Champernowne’s constant is to realize that the act of counting itself will ultimately explore every combination of base b digits. That’s what counting is all about.

Computations

Computing Champernowne’s constant can be done by concatenation of bit strings on a computer, but this may not necessarily be the fastest way of computation. Often computing the constant is much faster if one does so purely numerically.[2]

One method of computation includes the calculation of the continued fraction form of a number. Computing this form can help us analyse the number also.

Normally in considering a fraction, we take some real number y and split it into the quotient of two integers a and b so y = a/b, the continued fraction takes a real number y and splits in the following way

<math> y = a_0+ {1 \over a_1 + {1 \over a_2 + {1 \over a_3 + {1 \over a4 + \ddots } } } }</math>

which we can write more compactly as [a0; a1, a2, …].

For example, consider the exponential constant:

<math>e=2.718281828\cdots = 2 + {1 \over 1 + {1 \over 2 + {1 \over 1 + {1 \over 1 + \ddots } } } } = [2; 1, 2, 1, 1, 4, 1, 1, 6, 1, 1, \cdots]</math>

The terms in the continued fraction stop after some point if the number is rational, and continue indefinitely if the number is irrational. Clearly Champernowne’s constant is irrational, since rational numbers have a repeating or terminating expansion into digits to the right of the “decimal” (radix) point. So the continued fraction of Champernowne’s constant does not terminate.

If we were to stop the continued fraction after a certain point in an irrational number, we get an approximation to that number by means of a simple fraction. The more terms we take, the more accurate the approximation. For example,

[2; 1, 2, 1, 1] = 2.714285714, e – [2; 1, 2, 1, 1] = 0.003996114
[2; 1, 2, 1, 1, 4, 1, 1, 6, 1, 1] = 2.718281718, e – [2; 1, 2, 1, 1, 4, 1, 1, 6, 1, 1] ~ 1.10 ×10–7

If we are to examine the continued fraction of Champernowne’s constant, we get some erratic behaviour. In base 10,

C10 = [0; 8, 9, 1, 149083, 1, 1, 1, 4, 1, 1, 1, 3, 4, 1, 1, 1, 15,

4 57540 11139 10310 76483 64662 82429 56118 59960 39397 10457 55500 06620 04393 09026 26592 56314 93795 32077 47128 65631 38641 20937 55035 52094 60718 30899 84575 80146 98631 48833 59214 17830 10987,
6, 1, 1, 21, 1, 9, 1, 1, 2, 3, 1, 7, 2, 1, 83, 1, 156, 4, 58, 8, 54, …]

The large number at position 19 has 166 digits.
We get other extremely large numbers as part of the continued fraction if we continue. The next term of the continued fraction is huge, having 2504 digits. This can pose problems in computing the terms of the continued fraction, and may stress weak algorithms for computing the continued fraction. However, the fact that there are such large numbers as part of the continued fraction expansion means that if we take terms up to and onward from these large numbers, we get an exceedingly good approximation in comparison to the terms that did not include the large number. Calling this large number above at position 19 in the continued fraction K, then, for example,

C10 – [0; 8, 9, 1, 149083, 1, 1, 1, 4, 1, 1, 1, 3, 4, 1, 1, 1, 15] ~ –9 ×10–190
C10 – [0; 8, 9, 1, 149083, 1, 1, 1, 4, 1, 1, 1, 3, 4, 1, 1, 1, 15, K] ~ 3 ×10–356

which is an improvement in accuracy by 166 orders of magnitude.

A direct computation of Champernowne’s constant for a base b is given by

<math> C_b = \sum_{n=1}^\infty\frac{\sum_{k=b^{n-1}}^{b^n-1}kb^{-n(k-(b^{n-1}-1))}}{b^{\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}k(b-1)b^{k-1}}} </math>,

(Parkin).

Transcendence

In 1937, Kurt Mahler proved that Champernowne’s constant is transcendental; that is, it is not the root of any polynomial with integer coefficients.

Red Screen of Death | Other versions It was

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

The Red Screen of Death (abbreviated RSoD, sometimes called “Red Screen of Doom”) is a nickname for the error message which existed in some beta versions of Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows Vista. It was dropped in Beta 1 (Build 5112) of Windows Vista for all errors except boot loader errors. It can also be found (but rarely) in versions of Microsoft’s Windows 98 operating system. The red screen of death also appeared in builds of Codename “Memphis”.

It also sometimes refers to fatal errors in recent versions of Lotus Notes. These errors are not full-screen like the Microsoft red or blue screens of death, but rather are bright red boxes with black borders.

It can also be found on the Atari Jaguar System when a cartridge loading error occurs or an illegally copied cartridge is inserted. When this occurs, a jaguar roaring sound plays, the red Jaguar logo appears, and the background turns from black to red. This video shows it.

It is also found in some of the more sophisticated flight simulators (such as those of FlightSafety International). When a pilot crashes the aircraft, every screen in the cockpit turns red. This is usually accompanied by crashing sounds and a few violent kicks from the motion system.

Caribou-Targhee National Forest | Caribou.

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

Caribou-Targhee National Forest is located in the states of Idaho and Wyoming, with a small section in Utah in the United States. The forest is broken into several separate sections and extends over 3 million acres (12,000 km²). To the east the forest borders Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park and Bridger-Teton National Forest. Most of the forest is a part of the 20 million acre (81,000 km²) Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

Caribou and Targhee National Forests were combined from original forest lands created in 1891. Two designated wilderness areas are located in the easternmost sections of the forest, bordering on National Park lands. The 123,451 acre (500 km²) Jedediah Smith Wilderness is adjacent to Grand Teton National Park on the western slope of the Teton Range. Known for karst limestone formations, the wilderness has many caves and provides excellent views of the less often seen west face of the Teton peaks. The smaller 10,715 acre (43 km²) Winegar Hole Wilderness borders Yellowstone National Park and the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway, and was set aside primarily to protect prime grizzly bear habitat.

While western sections of the forest have a mixture of sagebrush and grasses, the higher elevations in the east support lodgepole pine, and numerous species of spruce and fir. In addition to grizzlies most of the major megafauna associated with Yellowstone National Park can be found in Caribou-Targhee National Forest. Black bear, wolf, elk, moose, mule deer, bison mountain lion and pronghorn have all been seen on forest lands. An active peregrine falcon recovery program was begun to return this bird species to some of their ancestral range. Cutthroat trout, brook trout and pike are found in the streams and lakes and the forest is considered one of the best fishing areas in the world for cutthroat trout.

Dozens of campgrounds and 1,600 miles (2,500 km) of trails allow access to much of the forest. There are two trails that access the high altitude Alaska Basin immediately west of the main Teton Range peaks and allow access to trails in Grand Teton National Park.

Present Arms | Present on

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

Present Arms is the second album by UB40 and was released in 1981. It reached #2 and spent 38 weeks on the UK album charts. An album of original songs, it spawned two top 20 hits in ‘One In Ten’ (#7) and ‘Don’t Let It Pass You By/Don’t Slow Down’ (#16).

Like their first album Signing Off, Present Arms contained many socially and politically charged lyrics, from the anti-militant title track to ‘Sardonicus’ which was about Risus sardonicus, the ironic smile on tetanus victims’ faces. The UK Top Ten hit “One In Ten” was an attack on Thatcherism. The album also touches on a subject very dear to UB40’s heart: ‘Lamb’s Bread’ and ‘Don’t Walk On The Grass’ are written as part of the band’s long standing campaign for the legalization of cannabis. Musically, the album continued in the heavy, reverb-drenched, mellifluous style of the debut.

As with Signing Off, Present Arms was critically acclaimed and commercially successful in the UK.

Track listing

  1. “Present Arms”
  2. “Sardonicus”
  3. “Don’t Let It Pass You By”
  4. “Wildcat”
  5. “One In Ten”
  6. “Don’t Slow Down”
  7. “Silent Witness”
  8. “Lamb’s Bread”

With the original 1981 release was a 12″ single containing two instrumental tracks. These were added to the CD album.

  1. “Don’t Walk On The Grass”
  2. “Dr X”

Christmas Sunday | and The Best Christmas

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

Christmas Sunday is a name for 26 December when it is a Sunday.

In the United Kingdom, if Christmas Day falls on a Saturday, 26 December is correctly referred to as “Christmas Sunday”, and Boxing Day moves to 27 December. However, since 1999 common practice has seen 26 December called “Boxing Day” even when it falls on a Sunday.

In Western Christianity, the first Sunday after Christmas is called “the First Sunday of Christmas”.

The christmas sunday is a special time of year for all. It symobolizes the passing of the year.

House management | ticket event

Monday, October 22nd, 2007

In theatre, house management concerns the selling of tickets, the ushering of patrons in front of house areas, and the maintenance and management of the theatre building itself. House management staff usually work for the theatre, under the supervision of the house manager, and not for the theatrical troupe which is currently occupying it. Often in regional or smaller theatres the responsibility falls under the aegis of the production manager. In any case, house management works closely with the production management team for the presentation of the theatrical production.
