Geodesic Airship Design | consisted

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

Geodesic Airship Design is an airship design superior to its predecessors. Typical early airship design consisted of a tube of constant diameter with rounded caps at the ends. Such tubes often buckled because the length was too long for the diameter.

At the other extreme, a purely spherical airship design is aerodynamically unstable.

In between is a geodesic design, in which the radius of the tube increases “evenly” from the ends to the middle.

Film synchronizer | Other versions It

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

A film synchronizer is a device used in the editing phase of filmmaking.

Film synchronizers generally have 1 to 8 “gang(s)”, or slots through which film can be threaded. Each gang consists of a group of large diameter sprockets on a common shaft. A rotating knob on the front, which moves the threaded film through the gangs, operates the synchronizer’s movement. At the same time, there is a mechanical numerical counter which records the amount of film that has passed through the gangs. The unit may have a counter that counts the number of frames, or the length of the footage. The entire purpose of the film synchronizer is to ensure that the film is in “sync” with other reels of film when it is hand-cranked through the gangs. The film editor may have a soundtrack on one gang, which can be read with an audio amplifier.

The synchronizer is used in conjunction with several other devices on what is called the editing “bench”. The film synchronizer is specifically used to track the length of a reel of film.

Both 16 mm and 35 mm versions exist, as well as versions with both 16 mm and 35 mm sprokets geared together so that the same number of frames are transported on each section.

Canyon of Heroes | parade down

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

The Canyon of Heroes is a colloquialism referring to a section of New York City’s lower Broadway and the Financial District that is the historic location of the city’s ticker-tape parades.

The traditional route of the parade is northward from Bowling Green to City Hall Park. The route is lined with tall office buildings along both sides for most of its route, affording a view of the parade for many thousands of office workers as well as the snowstorm-like jettison of shredded paper products onto the parade itself.

The sidewalks along the Canyon of Heroes have black granite strips embedded within them listing honorees of past ticker-tape parades.

The Man in Me | It was covered

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

“The Man in Me” is a song from Bob Dylan’s 1970 album New Morning. It is featured in the soundtrack to the 1998 Coen Brothers film The Big Lebowski. It plays during the stylized opening title sequence and during the hallucination sequence after the Dude is punched and his rug stolen. More recently it has been performed live by the film’s star, Jeff Bridges, at Lebowski Fest, an audience-participation oriented event commemorating the film. The song was also covered by The Clash during sessions for the album that was to become London Calling. It is available on The Vanilla Tapes. More recently it was covered by alternative rock group Say Anything; a popular demo version of the cover features Chris Conley (of Saves the Day) on vocals. It has also been covered, recently, by David Bazan, as well as Jenoah.

Warriors of Might and Magic | Magic Kingdom

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

Warriors of Might and Magic is a game in the fictional Might and Magic universe.

This game centers on the capture of a Soldier named Alleron, who is accused of being a necromancer. From there he is thrown into the Pit of the Accused with nothing but a bone club and a crawler shield. If he survives, he is deemed innocent.

This game plays very similarly to Crusaders of Might and Magic, but with a decidedly more action feel.

Christmas creep | into Christmas

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

Christmas creep is the commercial phenomenon of merchants and retailers exploiting the commercialized status of Christmas (see Christmas season) earlier and earlier every year. It is most often attributed to the desire of many merchants to take advantage of particularly heavy Christmas-related shopping well before Black Friday in the US and before Halloween in Canada and the UK. It can apply for other holidays as well, notably Valentine’s Day, Easter and Mother’s Day. The key for holiday creep is for retailers to lengthen their selling season for seasonal merchandise in order to maximize profit and to give early-bird shoppers a headstart on that holiday.
