The Beach Boys (album) | Caribou. It also

Monday, December 31st, 2007

The Beach Boys is an album by The Beach Boys, released in 1985. This album is notable for several reasons:

  • It was the band’s first album to be recorded after the death of Dennis Wilson.
  • It was the first of the band’s albums to be released on CD.
  • It was the band’s last album for CBS Records (now Sony Music).

For the album, the band hired Culture Club producer Steve Levine, who took them into the world of drum machines, synthesizers, sampling, and hi-tech recording technology. All the members – Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson, Mike Love, Bruce Johnston, and Al Jardine – took an active role in the project, writing several new songs for it, with Stevie Wonder and Culture Club each donating a song.

Although “Getcha Back” (composed by Love and his new musical partner, former Byrds producer Terry Melcher), was a top 30 hit, the album only reached #52 in the U.S. (making it their highest charting album since the release of 1976’s album 15 Big Ones). After the album, CBS Records let the band’s contract expire, leaving them without a record deal for the first time in years.

1890 Atlantic hurricane season | Be Continued and

Monday, December 31st, 2007

The 1890 Atlantic hurricane season officially began on June 1, 1890, and lasted until November 30, 1890. These dates conventionally delimit the period of each year when most tropical cyclones form in the Atlantic basin.

The 1890 season was fairly inactive, with only four storms forming. Two became hurricanes, two were tropical storms. However, due to scarce technology and the fact that only storms that affected land or ships were recorded, the actual total could be higher.

Contents

Storms

Tropical Storm #1

The season began unusually early, on May 27. This storm formed directly below Cuba, and went north across it with 50 mph (80 km/h) winds. It dissipated soon after leaving Cuban land on May 29.

Tropical Storm #2

The season continued with the second storm forming very close to the west coast of the Lesser Antilles on August 18. It continued west-northwest, and hit near the northeastern tip of the Yucatán Peninsula with 50 mph (80 km/h) winds. It continued north and hit the southeastern part of Louisiana. It continued up into Mississippi, where it dissipated on August 28.

Hurricane #3

The next storm formed on August 26. It formed to the northeast of the Lesser Antilles, and continued northwest. When it got to a position northeast of the Bahamas, it reached a peak of 115 mph winds, turned northwest and headed toward Nova Scotia. It traveled right over the southeastern coast of Nova Scotia, causing ship damage and fatalities. It then continued on its northeast path, and dissipated on September 3. It caused 9 deaths from a boat sinking.

Hurricane #4

The last storm formed to the east of Nicaragua on October 31. It traveled west, and hit Nicaragua with 80 mph (129 km/h) winds.

Christmas cookies | Christmas

Monday, December 31st, 2007

Christmas cookies are traditionally sugar cookies (though other flavors may be used based on family traditions and individual preferences) cut into various shapes related to Christmas. In the United States, since the 1930s, children have left cookies and milk on a table for Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, though many people simply consume the cookies themselves. The cookies are often cut into such shapes as those of candy canes, reindeer, and holly leaves. Oreos are also popular.

Ho, Ho, Ho | Christmas

Monday, December 31st, 2007

Ho, Ho, Ho (officially titled “VH1 Presents RuPaul Ho Ho Ho”) is the 1997 album of Christmas music released by drag queen, singer and actress RuPaul. The album was a combination of original music, standards and comedy vingettes. Most of the traditional songs were given a campy twist. The title is a double entendre: though it is a phrase associated with Christmas (it is the sound of Santa’s laughter expressed through onomatopoeia,) the term “ho” also refers to a whore or prostitute. The album’s cover features three scantily-clad versions of RuPaul, and the back cover features her legs with panties around the ankles; these are the “three hoes”.

The album was tied-in to a television Christmas special from The RuPaul Show on VH1. Much of the humor on the album is of a risqué nature, making it quite different from traditionally wholesome holiday albums. For instance, the classic “All I Want For Christmas” is turned into a thumping dance song with lyrical changes requesting breast implants, a tummy tuck and rhinoplasty, so that (as she sings) “I can look real purty!”.

Apple HD SC Setup | hard

Monday, December 31st, 2007

Apple HD SC Setup was a small software utility that was bundled with various versions of the Mac OS made by Apple Computer. Apple HD SC Setup can update drivers and partition and initialize hard disks. It was often used when reinstalling the operating system of an Apple Macintosh computer, or to repair corrupt partition information on a SCSI hard disk.

The version of HD SC Setup that shipped with the Mac OS was only able to manipulate hard disks that featured Apple ROMs. Versions of the program that were bundled with A/UX, however, could be used with any SCSI disk. A third-party patch <ref>HD SC Setup patching</ref> was released enabling standard editions of HD SC Setup to work on any SCSI disk.

In the mid 1990s, when Apple began shipping computers using ATA hard drives, HD SC Setup was replaced by Internal HD Format. Eventually, both Internal HD Format and Apple HD SC Setup were superseded with Drive Setup in 1995 and ultimately by Disk Utility.
