Dubnovellaunus | It also appears on

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

Dubnovellaunus or Dumnovellaunus was the name of at least one, and possibly several kings of south-eastern Britain in the late 1st century BC/early 1st century AD, known from coin legends and from a mention in the Res Gestae Divi Augusti.

  • Dubnovellaunus is the name of a king who, based on coin distribution, appears to have ruled over Kent east of the River Medway. He was the first king of the Cantiaci to issue inscribed coins: some of his coins appear to date from as early as 40-30 BC. Towards the end of the 1st century BC he seems to have been succeeded by a king called Vodenos or Vosenios, although it is possible the two kings’ reigns were contemporary or overlapped.
  • A king called Dubnovellaunus succeeded his father Addedomarus as king of the Trinovantes ca. 10-5 BC and ruled for several years before being supplanted by Cunobelinus of the Catuvellauni.
  • In the Res Gestae Divi Augusti, a British king called Dumnovellaunus appears, alongside Tincomarus of the Atrebates, as a supplicant to Augustus around AD 7.
  • Another Dumnovellaunus appears on coins of the Corieltauvi, dating ca. 45 AD. He appears to have been a subordinate king to Volisios, probably the overall king of the territory.

Given the chronology it is possible, but not certain, that Dubnovellaunus of the Cantiaci is the same individual as Dubnovellaunus of the Trinovantes; and the Trinovantian Dubnovellaunus is most likely to be the Dumnovellaunus who presented himself to Augustus.

Knish | versions It was covered

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

A knish (the “k” is pronounced) is an Eastern European snack food popular in Jewish communities. A knish consists of a filling covered with dough that is either baked or fried. Knishes can be purchased from street vendors in urban areas with a large Jewish population, sometimes at a hot dog stand.

In the most traditional versions, the filling is made entirely of mashed potato, ground meat, sauerkraut, onions, kasha (buckwheat groats) or cheese. More modern varieties of fillings feature sweet potatoes, black beans, fruit, broccoli, tofu or spinach.

Many cultures have variations on baked or fried dough-covered snacks similar to the knish: the Jamaican patty, the Spanish and Latin American empanada or Papa rellena and the South Asian samosa and the Bahavian Nakishka.

Knishes may be round or square/rectangular. They may be entirely covered in dough or some of the filling may peek out of the top. Sizes range from those that can be eaten in a single bite hors d’oeuvre to sandwich-sized knishes that can serve as an entire meal.

Compact discs were a relatively new consumer product at that time, and the front cover used CD-like artwork, although no CD media was included and the programs themselves came on three 3.5 inch floppy disks.

Tirol (fictional planet) | Rare Masters To Be

Thursday, March 27th, 2008
For other uses of Tyrol, see Tyrol (disambiguation).

In the fictional Robotech universe, Tirol is the homeworld of the Robotech Masters, who are the leaders of their race - the Tirolians, and their bioengineered Zentraedi troops. Tirol is the third moon distant from the blue-green, Jupiter-sized planet Fantoma, whose large ring system is extremely mineral rich. Fantoma is located in the Valivarre star system.

Tiresia is Tirol’s capital city and in its center is a pyramidal structure called the Great Hall, which is the seat of the planetary government. There is also a mining outpost not far from Tiresia called Rylac. Tirolian architecture appears to be Greco-Roman, for need of a Terran counterpart.

Tirol was the seat of power of the Robotech Masters Empire. After the Zentraedi failure to capture the SDF-1, and the inminent invasion by the Invid, the Masters depart with their massive spacefortresses towards Earth, in hope to capture the last supply of Protoculture in the known universe to be able to make a stand against the Invid, this being totally unknown to Earth’s forces. What was left after the Masters departure was easily overtaken by the war-inspired Invid. When the Robotech Expeditionary Force arrived at Tirol, the Masters had already departed, leaving behind the old, young, infirm, and incomplete clone triumvirates, who were incapable of defending against the Invid aggression. After being liberated by the Robotech Expeditionary Force, these Tirolians would establish a successor government to the Masters (who were killed in the Second Robotech War), designed after Earth-based democracies.

Songs from the West Coast | Elton John’s Christmas

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

Songs from the West Coast is the twenty-seventh studio album by British singer/songwriter Elton John, released in 2001. Many critics have said that this album brought John back to his piano-based musical roots. He once again collaborated with long-time lyricist Bernie Taupin. John also brought back former band members including drummer Nigel Olsson. This album marks the first time Elton John and collaborator Bernie Taupin wrote together in person, with the results showing maturity and depth. From the album, “I Want Love” was a single and a Grammy nominated song, and “Original Sin” and “This Train Don’t Stop There Anymore” also became hits.

Rufus Wainwright sings backing vocals on the track “American Triangle,” which is about Matthew Shepard, a college student who was murdered because he was gay.

The restaurant shown on the album’s cover is Rae’s Restaurant, which is frequently used as a location for many Los Angeles-based film shoots, including 1993’s True Romance and 2005’s Lords of Dogtown. John’s partner David Furnish and his Director of Operations Bob Halley appear on the album cover: Furnish as a cowboy at the bar and Halley as the man getting handcuffed.

The album was dedicated to Matthew Shepard and Oliver Johnstone, Davey Johnstone’s late son.

Track listing

All songs by John/Taupin.

  1. “The Emperor’s New Clothes” – 4:28
  2. “Dark Diamond” – 4:26
  3. “Look Ma, No Hands” – 4:22
  4. “American Triangle” – 4:49
  5. “Original Sin” – 4:49

  8. “The Wasteland” – 4:21
  9. “Ballad of the Boy in the Red Shoes” – 4:52
  10. “Love Her Like Me” – 3:58
  11. “Mansfield” – 4:56
  12. “This Train Don’t Stop There Anymore” – 4:39

Music videos

The music video for the song “I Want Love” featured and only had Robert Downey Jr. in it lip-synching.

The music video for the song “This Train Don’t Stop There Anymore” featured Justin Timberlake portraying a young Elton.

The music video for the song “Original Sin” featured Elizabeth Taylor and Mandy Moore. It also featured John playing the father of Moore’s character and the husband of Taylor’s character. Moore was the center of the video, who plays a huge Elton John fan from the 1970s who is transported by a dream (a la Cinderella) to one of his concerts. Then at the end she wakes up and Elton’s character asks, “Who is this Elton John, anyway?” It also has more of an upbeat dance mix to the music.
