Life and career

David Furnish was born in Toronto Ontario, Canada to Jack Furnish (retired, former director of Bristol-Myers) and Gladys Furnish (retired, homemaker). He has an older brother, John, and a younger brother, Peter. David graduated in 1981 from the Sir John A. Macdonald Collegiate Institute in the Scarborough Region of Toronto. He graduated from the business program at the University of Western Ontario in 1985, was recruited by the advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather, eventually transferred to the London office and was appointed to their Board.

A mutual friend of Furnish and Elton John left a message for Furnish inviting him to a dinner party at Elton John’s house on October 30, 1993. Initially fearing that the dinner would be unpleasant, or that John would be boring, he instead found John to be interesting and engaging. Both were attracted to each other; John asked for his phone number and the two had a private dinner the following night.

Furnish resigned from his position in 1994 after finding it increasingly difficult to balance the position’s demands with the demands of his new life with John.

With a keen interest in film, Furnish enrolled in courses at the British Film Institute. He is currently co-chief of Rocket Pictures along with John.

Furnish is a contributing editor for Tatler magazine and also is a regular columnist for Interview and GQ.

Furnish currently serves on the board of the Elton John AIDS Foundation, attending fundraisers and other events in support of that cause.

Elton John proposed to David Furnish in May 2005 at a dinner party with friends and family at their home in Old Windsor. John and Furnish entered into a civil partnership on December 21, 2005, the first day that civil partnerships could be performed in England, in the town of Old Windsor.

Media Player | included

Monday, May 26th, 2008

Media Player was a media player originally included in Windows 3.0 with Multimedia Extensions and a slightly updated version was included with Windows 3.1x. Media Player received a facelift with Video for Windows, with an OLE2 version provided with the runtime software. This version forms the basis for the 32-bit version included with Windows 95 and Windows NT.

From Windows 95 onwards, Media Player took the same version number as Windows itself. Thus in the original version of Windows 95 it reports itself as 4.00.950, in Windows 2000 it is 5.0.* and in Windows XP it is version 5.1.*, where * refers to the build number.

As of Windows 98, Media Player was rendered obsolete, Windows Media Player being the replacement. Media Player is still included in Windows XP; however, it is no longer included as of Windows Vista.

Features

Unlike its replacement, Media Player allows one to choose which MCI device to send the file to. Media Player can be used to embed music or video in a document, as it supports OLE.

Criticism

Media Player did not show video in its own window. Video would either be fullscreen or in a separate window, with the filename as the title. The only exception was when the video was viewed via OLE, in which case it is displayed within the application.

The version of Media Player included in Windows 3.x is compatible with most versions of Windows; however, it does not recognize certain recent file types.

Versions

1991 Media Player 3.0 in Windows 3.0 with Multimedia Extensions
1992 Media Player 3.1 in Windows 3.1
1992 Media Player 3.15 in Windows 3.1 with Video for Windows installed
1995 Media Player 4.0 in Windows 95
1999 Media Player 5.0 in Windows 2000
2004 Media Player 5.1 in Windows XP

The Little Whirlwind | street Mickey

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

The Little Whirlwind is a 1941 animated short subject, part of the Mickey Mouse series, produced by John Sutherland for Walt Disney Productions. Directed by Riley Thomson, the short was released by RKO Radio Pictures on February 14, 1941. The short involves Mickey’s attempts to help Minnie with her yard work, despite the pretense of several (anthropomorphic) twisters as foils.

Synopsis

Walking by Minnie Mouse’s house one day, Mickey Mouse is enticed by the aroma of a cake Minnie is baking. Promised a slice if he cleans the yard, Mickey immediately jumps into raking up the fall leaves littering Minnie’s lawn. While working in the yard, a small tornado as tall as Mickey comes along and makes his work more complicated. Mickey tries to fight the tornado away, but while chasing it, he encounters a bigger one which in turn chases him.

When the twister finally sucks Mickey in, he is sent for a spin until he ends up falling into Minnie’s water fountain. Minnie comes out, and she finds her yard a far worse mess than before. However, Mickey still gets the cake for his hard work - right in his face.

Animation notes

Much of the animation of the big tornado is taken from the 1935 Mickey Mouse cartoon The Band Concert.

The Little Whirlwind marks the final appearance of Mickey Mouse in his trademark red button-down shorts during his cartoon series’ original theatrical run. The shots would not be restored until Runaway Brain in 1995. In addition, The Little Whirlwind was the debut for a newly updated Mickey Mouse design: Mickey was given ears that worked in perspective (veruss his traditional, unchanging circles for ears), in addition to a slimmer body, larger head, hands and feet and the removal of his tail. This cosmetic change was relatively short-lived, and only lasted for the duration of World War II.
