Joe Christmas | christmas party favors

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Joe Christmas is a fictional character, one of the central characters in the 1932 novel Light in August by William Faulkner.

Raised in an orphanage, Joe Christmas knows little about his own identity. While he is presumably both black and white, Joe Christmas appears to be mostly white; in fact, there is no certainty that he is black at all, though he identifies himself as such.
His search for racial identity is central to the work.

His initials allude to Jesus Christ.

One critic described him as the loneliest character in American literature.

Ho, Ho, Ho | christmas party favors

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

Ho, Ho, Ho (officially titled “VH1 Presents RuPaul Ho Ho Ho”) is the 1997 album of Christmas music released by drag queen, singer and actress RuPaul. The album was a combination of original music, standards and comedy vingettes. Most of the traditional songs were given a campy twist. The title is a double entendre: though it is a phrase associated with Christmas (it is the sound of Santa’s laughter expressed through onomatopoeia,) the term “ho” also refers to a whore or prostitute. The album’s cover features three scantily-clad versions of RuPaul, and the back cover features her legs with panties around the ankles; these are the “three hoes”.

The album was tied-in to a television Christmas special from The RuPaul Show on VH1. Much of the humor on the album is of a risqué nature, making it quite different from traditionally wholesome holiday albums. For instance, the classic “All I Want For Christmas” is turned into a thumping dance song with lyrical changes requesting breast implants, a tummy tuck and rhinoplasty, so that (as she sings) “I can look real purty!”.

Spritzgebäck | christmas party favors

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

A spritzgebäck is a type of German Christmas cookie. They are relatively easy to make and require only common ingredients, including eggs, butter, sugar, and flour. When made correctly, they are crisp, fragile, somewhat dry, and buttery.

Spritzgebäck is a common pastry in Germany and served often during Christmas time. During this time, it is not unusual for mothers to spend the afternoons baking with their children for one or two weeks. Traditionally, mothers bake Spritzgebäck after their own special recipes, which they pass down to their children.

We Wish You a Merry Christmas | christmas party favors

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

“We Wish You a Merry Christmas” is a popular secular 16th century English carol from West Country of England. It is one of the few traditional holiday carols that makes mention of the New Year’s celebration.

Lyrics

1. We wish you a merry Christmas; We wish you a merry Christmas;
We wish you a merry Christmas and a happy New Year!

Chorus:
Good tidings we bring to you and your kin.
We wish you a merry Christmas and a happy New Year! (Or “Good tidings for Christmas and a happy New Year!”)

2. Now, bring us some figgy pudding; now, bring us some figgy pudding;
Now, bring us some figgy pudding and bring some out here!
Chorus

3. For we all like figgy pudding; for we all like figgy pudding;
For we all like figgy pudding: so bring some out here!
Chorus

4. And we won’t go until we’ve got some; We won’t go until we’ve got some;
And we won’t go until we’ve got some; so bring some out here!
Chorus
