Rock and roll revival | Ho! Who’d

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

Rock and Roll Revival was a back-to-basics musical trend of the late 1960s and early 1970s, in a sort-of backlash against the heavier rock sounds then in vogue.

As the Sixties ended, several early rock and rollers like Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Bo Diddley, who’d been out of fashion since the British Invasion, experienced a resurgence in popularity, performing their old hits to a mix of old and new fans. Rock and roll revival festivals became popular, and anticipated the “oldies show” package tours of later years.

Sha Na Na performed “At the Hop” at the Woodstock Festival in 1969, in the revival spirit.

John Lennon and Yoko Ono had a surprise hit album in 1970, with Live Peace in Toronto 1969, recorded at a revival show in September 1969. Appearing on the spur of the moment, with a hastily-assembed band (comprised of Lennon, Ono, Eric Clapton, Klaus Voormann and Alan White), Lennon led off their set with familiar songs (like “Blue Suede Shoes” and “Money (That’s What I Want)”) that suited the mood of the program.

Stefan and Laura | Favorites

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

Stefan Cassadine and Laura Spencer (played by daytime favorites Stephen Nichols and Genie Francis) were a fictional couple on the popular American soap opera, General Hospital.

Their story is rooted in the early ’80s tale of Laura’s disappearance from Port Charles, while she was secretly being held captive in Greece by the villainous Cassadine family. During her captivity, she found an exception in Stefan, who eventually became her secret friend and lover.

Years later, long after Laura’s return to America, Stefan and Laura’s history was revealed during the mid to late ’90s, and they eventually reunited during a time in which Laura and Luke grew apart.

At one time, it was believed that Stefan was the father of Laura’s son Nikolas, but it was later revealed that Stefan’s evil brother Stavros Cassadine is. Following their split, they eventually regained a friendly relationship.

Norfolk County Fair and Horse Show | Thanksgiving

Monday, January 21st, 2008

The Norfolk County Fair and Horse Show is an annual agricultural fair that takes place in the town of Simcoe, Ontario, Canada beginning the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and ending on the Canadian Thanksgiving Monday. The fair has been active in Norfolk County since 1840. Prior to the late 1990s, children from South Public School used to walk to the fair, as they were the closest school to the fairgrounds. The rides and midway attractions are considered by locals to be nearly that of Niagara Falls on the 48 acre complex. There is also a horse track where Paramutuel Betting is offered on the Saturday and Monday.

Inside one of the buildings, students from all over Norfolk County submit their artwork and they are evaluated by the judges. The top prize winners receive a small monetary cash prize. Larger prizes are offered for professional art, riding, horse, cattle and poultry shows. Other buildings feature commercial inventions and computer fortune telling done by a travelling fortune teller.

During the day, great foods are abundant on the fairgrounds, and at night, the stars come out with demolition derbies, tractor pulls and first line stage acts. Traditionally, the local schools are given opening Tuesday off from school to enjoy Young Canada Day at the fair where they receive a free admission. We remind all to come ready to spend the whole day with sun screens, epipens, wipes and all the goodies to make sure you have a great time.

And while the festivities of the fair are occurring, the Simcoe Recreation Center is used to provide exhibition space for local items, student art, displays and more entertainment on stage.

During the nighttime, various music bands (usually dealing in country music) would perform and the crowd is usually packed. Notable bands to perform during the festivities include Emerson Drive, Doc Walker, Colin James, Blue Rodeo, Tom Cochrane and Ronnie Hawkins.

The One Where Ross and Rachel Take a Break | Ho! Who’d Be

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

“The One Where Ross and Rachel Take a Break” is the fifteenth episode of season three of the television situation comedy Friends.

First aired: February 13, 1997

Plot

Phoebe decides to give free massages outside of the United Nations building, and meets a foreign diplomat named Sergei. Trouble is, Sergei doesn’t speak English, so his translator Mischa keeps “getting in the way.” Desperate for some alone time with Sergei but still have a translator around, Phoebe convinces Monica to come to dinner with them as Mischa’s date. Mischa and Monica hit it off so well that Mischa keeps forgetting to translate for Sergei, and starts fighting with Sergei. He eventually quits and takes Monica along with him to use his diplomatic coupons at the Rainbow Room. Phoebe then tries to teach Sergei English - with minimal success.

Rachel has to cancel on her and Ross’s one-year anniversary plans since she has to work late hours - as she had to every night for two weeks. Ross cannot understand why Rachel cannot make time for him. He surprises her at the office with a complete picnic set. As Ross starts a small fire on Rachel’s desks, she angrily orders him to wait for her at home. Later at the apartment Ross complains about Rachel working late hours. Also, he is afraid of Rachel having an affair with her co-worker Mark. Rachel, however, is not willing to deal with Ross’s jealousy and to have the same fight over and over again. She suggests taking a break. Ross thinks she wants to stop fighting and suggests getting frozen yogurt. But Rachel tells him she wants to take a break from their relationship, which leads Ross to leave.

Chandler and Joey get invited to a club by Chloe, the hot girl at the Xerox place whom they are both trying to hit upon. She invites them to come see her co-worker Isaac the DJ, and also makes a joke about they all having a three-some. Joey and Chandler then set up some loose “ground rules” in the event that she should agree to a threesome with them. A distraught Ross ends up meeting them at the club. He feels bad about his fight, and calls Rachel to apologize - but assumes the worst when he hears Mark (who’d gone over to comfort her) in the background. Chloe, who has always admired Ross, asks him to dance, and they end up kissing.

Cookies and Cream | Street Cookies

Sunday, December 2nd, 2007

Cookies and Cream (or Cookies ‘n Cream) is a popular flavoring in foods, including ice creams, milkshakes, and confectionery.

It is typically a flavor infused into desserts using crushed chocolate cookies sandwiching a cream filling. The flavor is widely associated with the the Oreo cookie, a kind of cookie sandwich with a sweet white cream filling commonly used in milkshakes and other frozen desserts such as Blizzards, pies, etc.

There is some debate as to who first invented and marketed Cookies ‘n Cream ice cream. John Harrison, the official taster for Dreyer’s/Edy’s Ice Cream, claims he invented it first for the company in 1982 [1], [2]. In another claim, Blue Bell Creameries claim they first mass-produced the flavor two years earlier in 1980 after an employee tasted it in Houston ice cream parlor the year before[3]. South Dakota State University claims the flavor was invented at the university’s Dairy Plant [4].
