Another Rock N’ Roll Christmas | christmas party favors

Sunday, August 3rd, 2008

“Another Rock N’ Roll Christmas” is a popular 1984 Christmas song by Gary Glitter.

The song is about the fun of Christmas and refers to Rock and Roll music throughout, examples being the lyrics “You’ll be rocking in your stocking” and “Come on, Rock and Roll for old St. Nick“. The song sold very well, hitting the Top 10 in the UK Singles Chart, becoming Glitter’s most successful song since 1975. Though he was still touring regularly when the song came out, Glitter has often credited “Another Rock N’ Roll Christmas” as a song that gave him a huge resurgence in popularity.

The song was included on the album Boys Will Be Boys, issued in 1985 and was reissued many times, both as a single (including a collectors picture disc) and on other albums.

The track was one of the most played Christmas songs in the UK for many years and is still played today, though not as heavily, following Glitter’s conviction for possessing child pornography.

Wedding favors | christmas party favors

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Wedding favors are small gifts given as a gesture of appreciation or gratitude to guests from the bride and groom during a wedding ceremony or a wedding reception.

The tradition of distributing wedding favors is a very old one. It is believed that the first wedding favor, common amongst European aristocrats, was known as a bonbonniere. A bonbonniere is a small trinket box made of crystal, porcelain, and/or precious stones. The contents of these precious boxes were generally sugar cubes or delicate confections, which symbolize wealth and royalty. (In this era, sugar was an expensive commodity and was treasured only among the wealthy. It was believed that sugar contained medical benefits). As the price of sugar decreased throughout centuries, the tradition of providing gifts to guests reached the general populace and was embraced by couples of modest means.

As sugar became more affordable, bonbonnieres were replaced with almonds. For centuries, almonds were commonly distributed to wedding guests to signify well wishes on the bridegroom’s new life. In the thirteenth century, almonds coated with sugar, known as confetti, were introduced. Confetti soon transformed to sugared almonds, which later evolved into the wedding favor for modern day weddings. Traditionally, five Jordan almonds are presented in a confection box or wrapped in elegant fabric to represent fertility, longevity, wealth, health and happiness. The bitterness of the almond and the sweetness of the coated candy exemplify the bitter sweetness of a marriage.

Today, gifts to guests are commonly known as wedding favors and are shared in cultures worldwide. Wedding favors have become a part of wedding reception planning, especially in the United States and Canada. Wedding favors are diverse and can range from the classic sugared almonds to small metal items. Some gifts may be personalized with the couple’s names and the wedding date.

The importance of and demand for wedding favors has created a new category of business in the wedding industry where thousands of sites compete selling just wedding favors. Wedding favors have surpassed the term ‘trend’ and have become commonplace among today’s weddings. “Wedding favors are no longer a niche market in the wedding industry. In fact, many wedding favor retailers would probably agree that it is become an industry of its own.”

Marie Masters | Masters To Be Continued

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Marie Masters (born February 4, 1941) is an American actress. She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. She attended Marian College in Indiana, and after graduation worked at the city desk of the publication Women’s Wear Daily.

Masters has been married twice; her first marriage to actor Robert Lipton (brother of Peggy Lipton) ended in divorce. She has two children, Jenny Harris and Jesse Harris. Jesse Harris has become an accomplished musician with his own band, and gained initial acclaim working with Norah Jones as well as winning a Grammy Award for songwriting; he wrote Jones’ AC hit “Don’t Know Why”.

Acting

Although she has played roles on Love of Life and One Life To Live, her most famous role has been Dr. Susan Stewart on As the World Turns, a role she played from 1968 to 1979 and from 1986 to present. The character of Susan was an alcoholic “homewrecker” during the show’s heyday in the 1970’s. The character again was featured as the troublemaker in 1990 when the show featured a storyline with Susan having an affair with the show’s cornerstone male character, Dr. Bob Hughes. The storyline was unusual in that all of the actors were over 50, yet the affair became a popular, attention grabbing storyline for nearly a year. Masters has been portraying the role on a recurring basis since 2002 but is still seen often. She was prominently featured in the 50th anniversary episode of the show in April 2006.

Other roles

Masters has been featured on several primetime programs, including “Kate and Allie”, “Law & Order”, and “Our Group”. Masters has been involved with the New York City theater group New Group since its inception in 1993, and has been a director or assistant director for many productions.

She is also an accomplished writer, having co-written the films “Mad Money”, “The Special”, “Played Out” and “Loveland”. For several years, Masters was a member of the writing team at “As The World Turns”.

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

1 Snow Hill Plaza (also known as Kennedy Tower) is a highrise office building in Birmingham, England. It is 72 metres tall and was completed in 1973.

It receives the name Kennedy Tower from the mural dedicated to John F. Kennedy which was located in Snow Hill Circus until it was removed in mid-2006.

It was redeveloped and modernised externally in previous years to be better suited to the environment which it will be a part of which will see the construction of a major mixed-use development adjacent to Snow Hill station. It forms a prominent addition on the skyline when viewed from the north.

Elementary event | event

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

In probability theory, an elementary event or atomic event is a subset of a sample space that contains only one element. It is important to note that an elementary event is still a set containing an element of the sample space, not that element itself. However, elementary events are often written as elements rather than sets for simplicity, where this is unambiguous.

Examples of sample spaces, S, and elementary events include:

  • If objects are being counted, and the sample space S = {0, 1, 2, 3, …} (the natural numbers), then the elementary events are all sets {k}, where kN.
  • If a coin is tossed twice, S = {HH, HT, TH, TT}, H for heads and T for tails, and the elementary events are {HH}, {HT}, {TH} and {TT}.
  • If X is a normally distributed random variable, S = (-∞, +∞), the real numbers, and the elementary events are all sets {x}, where xR. This example shows that a continuous probability distribution is not determined by the probabilities assigned to atomic events, since all of those are zero.

Elementary events may have probabilities that are strictly positive, zero, undefined, or any combination thereof. For instance, any discrete probability distribution is determined by the probabilities it assigns to what may be called elementary events. In contrast, all elementary events have probability zero under any continuous distribution. Mixed distributions, being neither entirely continuous nor entirely discrete, may contain atoms, which can be thought of as elementary (that is, atomic) events with non-zero probabilities. Under the measure-theoretic definition of a probability space, the probability of an elementary event need not even be defined, since mathematicians distinguish between the sample space S and the events of interest, defined by the elements of a σ-algebra on S.

Stephen Christmas | Christmas

Friday, February 8th, 2008

Stephen Christmas (12 February 1947- 20 December, 1993) was a 5 year old boy when he became the first patient described to have Christmas disease (or Haemophilia B) in 1952 by a group of British doctors.

Biography

Steven was born to a British family in Toronto, Canada, and was investigated for his severe bleeding disorder in Oxford, where it was discovered that he was not deficient in Factor VIII, which is normally decreased in classic haemophilia, but a different protein, which received the name Christmas factor in his honour (and later Factor IX).

Stephen was dependent on blood and plasma transfusions, and was infected with HIV in the period during which blood was not routinely screened for this virus. He campaigned for transfusion safety ever since getting infected, but developed AIDS, of which he died in 1993.

Be Still | song written

Friday, February 1st, 2008

“Be Still” is a song written by Dennis Wilson and Stephen Kalinich for the American pop band The Beach Boys. It was released on their 1968 album Friends. The song features Dennis Wilson on lead vocal.

The song is an important part of Dennis Wilson’s composing career as it is believed by many historians of the band, along with his song “Little Bird”, to be his first real composition. The song undoubtedly gave confidence to Dennis as he began regularly composing songs in years to come, some of which are regarded amongst the groups best efforts of the period. The only other composition that Dennis had either composed by himself or made a large contribution to was the song “Denny’s Drums” which was released on the 1964 Beach Boys album Shut Down Volume 2. “Be Still” was recorded in April, 1968 at Brian’s home studio and I.D. Sound studios. The song features a simple instrumental backing with Dennis’ lead vocal assisting by his brother Carl. The song was once thought to be a song co-written with Charles Manson though this of course is false, though he did co-write one of the later Dennis Wilson compositions, “Never Learn Not to Love”.
