Davey Johnstone | by Elton John released

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

Davey Johnstone (born 6 May 1951 in Edinburgh, Scotland), is a rock guitarist and vocalist, best known for his work with Elton John, Alice Cooper, and Meat Loaf.

Career

Johnstone’s first work was with Noel Murphy in 1968, where he received his first album credit. In 1969 Johnstone worked as a session musician with the British folk group, Magna Carta, on their Seasons album. After Lyell Tranter, the second guitarist in Magna Carta, left the band, Johnstone took his place. He played as a full-time band member on two Magna Carta albums: Songs from Wastie’s Orchard (named after the street where he lived in Long Hanborough, Oxfordshire), and a live album entitled In Concert. During his stint with Magna Carta, he played a wide variety of instruments including guitar, mandolin, sitar, and dulcimer. It was during his work with Magna Carta that he caught the attention of Magna producer Gus Dudgeon who asked Johnstone to play on Bernie Taupin’s self-titled 1970 solo album, which resulted in a meeting with Elton John and Johnstone playing on his 1971 album Madman Across the Water.

Johnstone, widely respected for his multi-instrumental abilities and hard-edged guitar licks with tasteful accents, was then welcomed into Elton John’s band full-time. Johnstone released a solo album, Smiling Face, in 1973 through Rocket Records and created a short-lived band called China that released a self-titled album in the late 1970s.

Even while playing alongside other artists such as Meatloaf and Alice Cooper during the late 1970s and early 1980s, Johnstone was never very far from Elton’s projects and, following his reunion with original band mates Nigel Olsson and Dee Murray full-time for 1982’s “Jump Up” tour, has since rarely been absent from an Elton John album track or tour.

In 1990, Davey collaborated for the first time with lyricist Steve Trudell. With music and lyric in place, the two formed Warpipes, which included past and present Elton John band members Nigel Olsson on drums, Bob Birch on bass, Guy Babylon on keyboards, along with and Billy Trudel on vocals. In 1991, Warpipes released their only album, “Holes in the Heavens,” on self-owned label Artful Balance Records. When Artful Balance Records folded, this album was re-released on Bridge Recordings. The album title was changed to simply “Warpipes” and the song lineup was altered slightly.

In 1996, Johnstone released a video of instructional guitar called “Davey Johnstone: Starlicks Master Sessions,” on which he plays a wide variety of Elton John classics, joined by Billy Trudel on vocals and Bob Birch on bass.

In 1997, while on tour with Elton, Johnstone and then Elton John Band mate and former Hellicasters guitarist John Jorgenson spent much of their off time creating “Crop Circles,” an album of acoustic instrumentation released in 1998 to much critical praise.

He is currently serving as Elton’s musical director, in addition to his guitar work, playing along with Nigel Olsson (drums, backing vocals), Guy Babylon (keyboards), John Mahon (percussion, backing vocals) and Bob Birch (bass, backing vocals).

Other acts

He has also appeared with other artists like Leo Sayer, Bob Seger, and Rod Stewart, to name a few.

Ganswindt (crater) | and also covered by

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

Ganswindt is a lunar crater that lies near the southern pole of the Moon’s far side. It is attached to the southwestern exterior of the huge Schrödinger walled plain. Ganswindt partly overlays the smaller Idel’son crater to the south.

The rim of Gandswindt is roughly circular but somewhat irregular, particularly at the southern edge. Much of the interior floor is covered in uneven ridges, and there is a small crater in the southeastern section. Because sunlight enters the interior at a low angle, the northern part of the floor is almost always covered in shadow, concealing the terrain in that section of the crater.

Tinsel | Christmas

Friday, January 4th, 2008

Tinsel is a thin metallic strip typically made of plastic for use for Christmas decoration, particularly on Christmas trees. Tinsel is different than Garland, which is “Tinsel on a rope”. It was invented in Germany in 1610, and was originally made of shredded silver.<ref></ref>

Tinsel used to include lead, which caused the strands to hang better from the branches. This was eventually removed due to safety concerns.

We Wish You a Merry Christmas | Elton John’s Christmas

Wednesday, December 26th, 2007

“We Wish You a Merry Christmas” is a popular secular 16th century English carol from West Country of England. It is one of the few traditional holiday carols that makes mention of the New Year’s celebration.

Lyrics

1. We wish you a merry Christmas; We wish you a merry Christmas;
We wish you a merry Christmas and a happy New Year!

Chorus:
Good tidings we bring to you and your kin.
We wish you a merry Christmas and a happy New Year! (Or “Good tidings for Christmas and a happy New Year!”)

2. Now, bring us some figgy pudding; now, bring us some figgy pudding;
Now, bring us some figgy pudding and bring some out here!
Chorus

3. For we all like figgy pudding; for we all like figgy pudding;
For we all like figgy pudding: so bring some out here!
Chorus

4. And we won’t go until we’ve got some; We won’t go until we’ve got some;
And we won’t go until we’ve got some; so bring some out here!
Chorus

Nernst glower | External

Monday, December 24th, 2007

The Nernst glower is an obsolete device for providing a continuous source of (near) infrared radiation for use in spectroscopy. Typically it was in the form of a cylindrical rod or tube composed of a mixture of certain oxides such as zirconium oxide (ZrO2), yttrium oxide (Y2O3) and erbium oxide (Er2O3) at a ratio of 90:7:3 by weight. They operated by being electrically heated to about 2000 °C. Initially they required external heating because the material is an insulator at room temperature.

It has been replaced by a similar device known as a Globar made of silicon carbide (SiC) that operates at about 1100 °C. The Globar does not require an external preheater as it is an electrical conductor at any temperature. It is also better suited for use in evacuated systems.

MD.45 | remastered reissue

Saturday, December 1st, 2007

MD.45 was a side project of Megadeth guitarist/frontman Dave Mustaine, Fear guitarist/vocalist Lee Ving on singing duties, bassist Kelly LeMieux and former Suicidal Tendencies member Jimmy DeGrasso on drums. Dave Mustaine, fed up with Megadeth at the time, but still interested in music, wanted to create an album showcasing a different musical style than Megadeth.

MD.45 History

The first (and only) album released was The Craving in Japan first on May 29, 1996 and in other nations on (July 23, 1996). According to the album’s liner notes, the title track was originally a Megadeth demo song, which is on the 2004 remastered edition of the album featuring the then line-up of Megadeth.

Almost a decade later, while Capitol Records was releasing remastered versions of Megadeth’s back catalog, Dave Mustaine chose to remaster “The Craving”. According to the liner notes, during the remastering process, it was realized that the vocal track and harmonica track were “missing.” Because of the prior disappointment with Lee Ving’s vocals and the alleged fact that fans wanted to hear Mustaine sing, Mustaine chose to do the vocals himself and simulate the harmonica parts on the guitar.

Lineup

  • Dave Mustaine - Guitar, Vocals (on remastered)
  • Kelly LeMieux - Bass
  • Jimmy DeGrasso - Drums

Former

  • Lee Ving - Vocals

Walong | Caribou.

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

Walong is a small cantonment and administrative town in the Anjaw District of the state of Arunachal Pradesh in northeastern India. Anjaw was carved out of Lohit District in 2004. Walong’s approximate position is 28 degrees 06 minutes North, 97 degrees East. It lies on the west bank of the Lohit River ( a tributary of the Brahmaputra), approximately 20 kilometres south of the Chinese border. Just north of the border lies the Tibetan trading town of Rima. Walong is approximately 180 km. by road from the district headquarter town of Tezu. It had an Advanced Landing Ground (ALG) capable of taking Otters and Caribous which has now been abandoned. There is an operational helipad. The town is connected to Tezu by a thrice-weekly bus.

In autumn of 1962 Walong was the scene of the Battle of Walong when the outnumbered Indian Army 11th Infantry Brigade blocked the thrust of the invading Chinese. The Brigade put up a valiant and tenacious defence between 22 October and 16 November 1962 until it was reduced to pitiful remnants, and then withdrew down the valley to Hayuliang. The Chinese, who had suffered large casualties, did not follow up beyond Changwinty.

A canopied memorial to the Indian war dead of 1962 was erected long ago next to the airstrip with the following verses composed by a Walong veteran inscribed on it:

The sentinel hills that round us stand
bear witness that we loved our land.
Amidst shattered rocks and flaming pine
we fought and died on Namti Plain.
O Lohit gently by us glide
pale stars above us softly shine
as we sleep here in sun and rain.

Next to this is a marker relating the history of Walong ALG, and nearby the wreck of a Caribou which crashed here. A new large memorial to the Walong war dead of 1962 has come up in 2002 on the road leading North to Kibithu.Two small temples have also come up on ‘Helmet Top’, a hill position some 18 kilometres away, which was so named because of helmets and other military gear found strewn there.
