The Great American Parade | Hit Parade

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

The Great American Parade is a political novel by Robert Burrows that achieved moderate success only after being described in a national newspaper as the worst novel ever published in the English language

Burrows, a retired University of Wisconsin-Whitewater English professor, self-published the book, his first novel, in a run of 2000 copies. Initial distribution was 400 copies.[2]

The book, which turns a jaundiced eye on George W. Bush’s tax policies, centers around the conceit that the President calls all Americans to march in a great parade in Washington DC - in order of wealth, with the poorest citizens at the front and the richest in the rear. A cadre of idealistic college students ultimately foils the President’s plans to turn America into a two-tier society.

The book attracted little notice until Washington Post columnist Gene Weingarten described the novel as “…a wretchedly terrible product that shames the American publishing industry.”[3] Since then, the novel has attracted a small following, being sold through print on demand technology.

Christmas Wrapping | links Step Into Christmas

Friday, March 7th, 2008

“Christmas Wrapping” (sometimes misspelled as “Christmas Wrappings”) is a Christmas song performed in 1981 by The Waitresses and later covered by the Spice Girls. Save Ferris also recorded a version with different lyrics.

The song is narrated from the point of view of a busy single woman who is adamant that she will try to sit-out the exhausting Christmas period, not participating in the traditional Christmas activities (except for making dinner, see below).

She reveals that, during the course of the year, she has attempted to meet up with a man she encountered in a ski shop the previous year. Despite the couple’s attempts to meet, a succession of mishaps conspires to keep them apart.

Finally on Christmas Eve, while the protagonist (after stating that A&P provided her with “the world’s smallest turkey”) is doing last-minute shopping for cranberries at a local convenience store, ends up running into the man after discovering that he, too, forgot to buy cranberries.

This coincidence seems to hint that the narrator, and therefore the listener, shouldn’t completely abandon their faith in the magic of Christmas.

Bonus stage | bonus track on

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

A bonus stage (also known as a bonus level or bonus round) is a special level within a video game designed to reward the player or players. A bonus stage typically allows the player to collect extra points or power-ups and usually has no dangerous enemies. Many bonus stages need to be activated or discovered in some manner.

In some games, bonus stages have an interface and game paradigm that is completely different and disconnected from the rest of the game, as in the slot machine bonus stage of Super Mario Brothers 2. Other bonus stages use the same gaming paradigm as the rest of the game, as in the car smashing bonus stage of Street Fighter II. In the Bomberman series, they also have enemies in bonus stages with the goal being to defeat as many enemies as you can to earn items and power-ups. In addition, the player won’t lose a life from touching the enemy or being caught in a bomb blast during the bonus stage. Many games feature bonus stages somewhere between the two extremes.

The type of modern game which most commonly uses bonus stages is the platform game.

History

The first game containing a bonus stage is widely believed to be Galaga. The level would begin with the text “Challenging Stage” and would feature enemies that do not attack. The player is then rewarded extra points based on how many enemies could be eliminated.

Since few modern games use points as an incentive for gameplay, most modern bonus stages reward the player with power-ups rather than points. Modern games have often blurred the traditional distinction between bonus stages and ordinary levels. Most first-person shooter games allow players to enter bonus rooms within larger (non-bonus) levels to temporarily power up. Some games have optional bonus stages which must be discovered and whose completion impacts the mechanics of the rest of the game, as in the “Star Road” levels of Super Mario World.
