Tinsel | christmas party favors

Friday, July 4th, 2008

Tinsel is a thin metallic strip typically made of plastic for use for Christmas decoration, particularly on Christmas trees. Tinsel is different than Garland, which is “Tinsel on a rope”. It was invented in Germany in 1610, and was originally made of shredded silver.

Tinsel used to include lead, which caused the strands to hang better from the branches. This was eventually removed due to safety concerns.

Business record | Business for the ‘Bollocks

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

A business record is a document that records a business dealing. Business records include meeting minutes, memorandums, employment contracts, and accounting source documents.

It must be retrievable at a later date so that the business dealings can be accurately reviewed as required. Since business is dependent upon confidence and trust, not only must the record be accurate and easily retrieved, the processes surrounding its creation and retrieval must be perceived by customers and the business community to consistently deliver a full and accurate record with no gaps or additions.

Business information | Business for the ‘Bollocks

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Business Information is one of the three main segments of the Information Industry. The other two segments are Scientific, Technical & Medical (“STM”) and Educational & Training content.

The Business Information industry is presently estimated to be a more than $358 Billion market, according to industry analysts Outsell, Inc. Where much of the content industry revenues are advertising-driven, the Business Information segment remains largely driven by paid content, either via subscription or transaction (pay-per-view).

The primary forms of business information include:

  • News
  • Market Research
  • Credit and Financial Information
  • Company and Executive Profiles
  • Industry, Country and Economic Analysis
  • IT Research

While Wall Street’s thirst for information traditionally drove the business information market, its use is much more widespread today. In addition to the financial markets, business information is used heavily for sales and marketing, competitive intelligence, strategic planning, human resources and many other strategic business functions.

Today, there are more than 200 http://www.alacrawiki.com/index.php?title=Premium_Business_Information_Databases providers of business information. While the Internet has made it easier for business information publishers to deliver content directly to their users, there remains a strong market for aggregators of such content which package business information in ways to meet an industry or customer’s workflow.

Wedding Cake Island | Wedding Present on their

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

Wedding Cake Island is an island off Coogee Beach, Sydney, which protects the beach from most swells. It is also known as Lemo’s Island.

The most probable source of the name is the shape of the island - it resembles a wedding cake. Another theory is that bird droppings on the island gave the appearance of icing on a cake. Apparently the island was also formerly called Gingerbread Island.

In 1975 Wedding Cake Island was the title of a popular surf music instrumental single by Australian rock music band Midnight Oil. The track was re-released in 1980 on the EP Bird Noises.

Streets of Forbes | Twas’ the

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

“Streets of Forbes” is an Australian folksong about the death of bushranger Ben Hall. The song is one of the most well known elements of the Australian folk repertoire. It has been recorded by many folk and popular artists and groups including The Bushwhackers, Gary Shearston and Weddings Parties Anything. Paul Kelly made his public debut singing the Australian folk song ‘Streets Of Forbes’ to a Hobart audience in 1974[1]. The Streets of Forbes is usually listed as traditional or anonymous, but Gary Shearston writes that “there are reasons for thinking John McGuire, [Ben Hall’s brother in law,] may well have been the original author” [2].

Come all you Lachlan men and a sorrowful tale I’ll tell,
The story of a decent man who through misfortune fell,
His name it was Ben Hall, a man of high renown,
Who was hunted from his station, and was like a dog shot down.
For years he roamed the roads, and he showed the traps some fun,
One thousand pounds was on his head, with Gilbert and John Dunn.
Ben parted from his comrades, the outlaws did agree,
To give away bushranging and to cross the briny sea.
Ben went to Goobang Creek, and that was his downfall
For riddled like a sieve was the valiant Ben Hall,
‘Twas early in the morning upon the fifth of May
That the seven police surrounded him as fast asleep they lay.
Billy Dargin he was chosen to shoot the outlaw dead,
The troopers then fired madly and they filled him full of lead,
They rolled him in his blanket and strapped him to prad[3],
And they led him through the streets of Forbes, to show the prize they had.

Little Christmas | Christmas

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

Little Christmas, or Nollaig Bheag in the Irish language, is one of the traditional names in Ireland for January 6, more commonly known in the rest of the world as the Epiphany. It is so called because it was, until the adoption of the Gregorian calendar, the day on which Christmas Day was celebrated. It is the traditional end of the Christmas season and the last day of the Christmas holidays for both Primary and Secondary schools.

The name Little Christmas is also found in Slovenian (mali božič).

It is also known as Nollaig na mBan (Women’s Christmas), so called because of the tradition (still very strong in Cork, though only just surviving in the rest of the country) of Irish men taking on all the household duties on that day and giving their spouses a day off. Most women will either hold parties or go out to celebrate the day with their friends, sisters, mothers, aunts etc. Bars and restaurants have a near 100% female clientele on this night. Children often buy presents for their mothers and grandmothers and it closely resembles Mother’s Day in this respect.

Artificial being | also appears on

Friday, February 15th, 2008

An artificial being is a term used to describe a machine intelligence that evolves out of existing infrastructure, as opposed to being deliberately designed and built that way.

The term is used typically to contrast approaches in discussion with artificial intelligence (AI), where machine intelligence is the deliberate aim of the work. To date AI has been unable to create a “true” machine intelligence, but much of this appears to be due to a misunderstanding, or under-evaluation, of the term “intelligence”.
It appears that human intelligence evolved once a critical event at an uncertain level of complexity in the brain was reached, a so-called emergent behaviour. Users of the term artificial being suggest that emergent algorithms will evolve machine intelligence in the same way, and is unlikely to be the result of deliberate design.

The true difference, if any, between the two terms is somewhat unclear, and it is used mostly to illustrate that a particular approach is not “classical” due to the negative connotations AI has garnered over the years.

Pixanne | Ho! Ho! Who’d

Friday, February 15th, 2008

Pixanne was a popular children’s television program hosted by singer-actress Jane Norman (born about 1935) that ran from 1960 to 1976, primarily on WCAU-TV in Philadelphia. The show was syndicated nationally from 1970 to 1976.

The show began when Norman, a onetime child prodigy who’d been playing and composing music since she was 8, contacted on old classmate from Temple University, working at what was then WFIL and is now WPVI-TV about a possible children’s program featuring a Peter Pan-like character. Though there were no openings at WFIL the friend recommended her to the CBS owned-and-operated station WCAU. Though she walked in with no appointment, she got the show immediately, and production soon began. The name “Pixanne” was a combination of “pixie” and “Anne” (”Pixjane”, apparently, didn’t sound as good), and a costume, looking very much like Mary Martin’s Peter Pan, was made. There was a supporting cast of puppets as well, including Oggie the owl, and Fliffy the butterfly. There was an alter-ego as well: A witch called Windy.

When WCAU management changed in 1969, they took Pixanne off the air, much to the protests of many viewers. But the show soon came back on in syndication, with WNEW-TV in New York as the flagship station. The show went off the air in 1976. Jane Norman is still singing and performing around her native Philadelphia, though her performing is now mostly focused towards adults.

Chairs Missing | reissue of the

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

Chairs Missing is the second album by the band Wire. It was released in 1978. Although it shares a punk-derived “outsider” voice with the band’s debut, Pink Flag, it features more developed song structure (taking some cues from 70’s prog-rock and art rock) and a broader palette of emotional and intellectual subject matter. The album was produced by Mike Thorne. Thorne added keyboard and synthesizer elements (compare the versions of “Outdoor Miner”; with and without the piano accompaniment), which were later expanded upon by the band members on their later releases. These contributions add to the album’s identification as the release in which the band largely transcended and abandoned the punk genre. The pop sensibilities that would come to the fore in their later incarnation of 1985 are evident in songs such as “Outdoor Miner” and “I Am the Fly”. EMI appreciated the more melodic sound of “Outdoor Miner” so much that they asked the band to come up with an expanded version of the song for release as a single (which was rather perverse, considering the fact that single releases are normally shortened versions of album tracks).

Track listing

  1. “Practise Makes Perfect” – 4:11
  2. “French Film Blurred” – 2:34
  3. “Another the Letter” – 1:07
  4. “Men 2nd” – 1:43
  5. “Marooned” – 2:21
  6. “Sand in My Joints” – 1:50
  7. “Being Sucked In Again” – 3:14
  8. “Heartbeat” – 3:16
  9. “Mercy” – 5:46
  10. “Outdoor Miner” – 1:44
  11. “I Am the Fly” – 3:09
  12. “I Feel Mysterious Today” – 1:57
  13. “From the Nursery” – 2:58
  14. “Used To” – 2:23
  15. “Too Late” – 4:14

Bonus tracks

  1. “Go Ahead” − 4:01 [1989 reissue]
  2. “Outdoor Miner (Long Version)” − 2:54 [1994 reissue]
  3. “Former Airline” − 3:20 [1989 reissue, 1994 reissue]
  4. “A Question of Degree” − 3:09 [1989 reissue, 1994 reissue]

Extra tracks have been removed from the 2006 remastered reissues, because they, according to the band, didn’t honour the “conceptual clarity of the original statements”.
