Gaylord Dingler | Who’d

Monday, February 4th, 2008

Gaylord Dingler is an American stand-up comic, best known for his infamous sessions at The Comedy Store in West Hollywood, California.

Dingler was known by Comedy Store patrons as a “Potlucker,” aka someone who performs during the club’s open mike nights, which would routinely attract 40 comics vying for only 20 spots.
For the Potluck show, aspiring performers drew a number from a weathered frozen strawberry bucket - those chosen got three minutes on stage. No qualifications were necessary. The Potluck was a rite of passage for many aspiring comedians - comics who successfully performed routinely at the potluck often graduated to paying jobs.

Dingler, however, performed at the potluck for nearly 27 years, doing the same material, performance after performance. He eventually became bitter, and seemingly held grudges against many Comedy Store alumni (such as Jim Carrey, Andrew Dice Clay, Jay Leno, David Letterman and Eddie Griffin) who’d successfully risen through the ranks following the same path.

Long-time patrons of the Comedy Store eventually began to treat Dingler as a cult symbol, and would often do his routine along with him, often calling out his punchlines before he could. In later years, the hosts of the pot-luck shows would save Dingler’s appearance for the end of the evening, when more inebriated and exuberant audiences would play along with his disturbingly hilarious act.

Dingler’s personal history and appearance remained a mystery to many, leading to speculation that he was possibly a millionaire playboy, homeless or a Post-Traumatic Shock Syndrome riddled Vietnam veteran.

In 2004, Dingler suddenly disappeared from The Comedy Store and the comedy scene, leading to speculation that he had either died in a gutter or been murdered, but according to an article written by up and coming comedian Todd Munson, Gaylord Dingler was a stage name for Jeffrey Allen Kaufman, who now lives somewhere in the Mid-West.

A much anticipated Documentary Film titled ‘The Machine Ripped His Leg Off : The Legend of Gaylord Dingler is currently being shot by English filmmaker Kjeld Gogosha-Clark of Los Angeles based Working Class Films and Munson.

Boulevard of Broken Dreams (song) | covered by the

Monday, February 4th, 2008

Boulevard of Broken Dreams” was a 1934 hit song by Al Dubin (words) and Harry Warren (music), set in Paris. The narrator says “I walk along the street of sorrow/The Boulevard of Broken Dreams/Where gigolo and gigolette/Can take a kiss without regret/So they forget their broken dreams.” It was used in the 1952 film Moulin Rouge. It was a regional hit for Tony Bennett in 1950. It was covered by No Wave artist James White on his 1983 album Flaming Demonics. Marianne Faithfull also covered it in her Hal Willner produced weary/lush album Strange Weather. Monsieur Camembert featured it one their ARIA award-winning self-titled album, Monsieur Camembert (album), sung by Jacqi Stoddard. It was also re-arranged and covered by Diana Krall for her 2006 album From This Moment On and released as a bonus track on iTunes.
Tony Bennett recorded a duet of the song with Sting for his last album.

Mickey’s Revue | Mickey

Friday, January 25th, 2008

Mickey’s Revue is a 1932 Walt Disney cartoon directed by Wilfred Jackson this short features Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Horace Horsecollar and Clarabelle Cow performing another song and dance show. Mickey and his gang’s animated shorts by this point routinely featured song and dance numbers. It begins as a typical Mickey cartoon of the time, but what would set this short apart from all that had come before was the appearance of a new character, whose behavior served as a running gag. This cartoon introduced Dippy Dawg (later to be known as Goofy), as he was named by Disney artists, as a member of the audience. He constantly irritated his fellow spectators by noisily crunching peanuts and laughing loudly, till two of those fellow spectators knocked him out with their mallets. It is not to be confused with the Mickey Mouse Revue at Tokyo Disneyland.

Christmas ham | Christmas

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

A Christmas Ham is a traditional ingredient in the Finnish and Swedish Christmas celebrations.

Before the arrival of Christianity to Scandinavia, a boar, the wild ancestor of the pig, was sacrificed to the god Freyr at the Yule celebrations and eaten (see Blót). This tradition of butchering a pig at Christmas continued after the Christianization and survives as several dishes (sausages and bread dipped in pork fat) of which the Christmas ham is the most central. Also the Germanic people had a similar celebration as did the ancient Romans, who sacrificed a pig to the Roman god Saturn about the same time Christmas is celebrated nowadays. The ham is considered as important part of the holiday setting as the Christmas tree.

Hot Girls in Love | covered by the band

Monday, January 14th, 2008

Hot Girls in Love” is a song recorded by the rock band Loverboy. It appeared in 1983 on their third album, Keep it Up. When released as a single later that year, it reached #11 on the billboard charts.

“Hot Girls in Love” was covered by the short-lived European glam rock band The Cherry Bombz, and was the title track of their 1985 “mini-LP” (although that record was originally entitled “The Cherry Bombz”). The Cherry Bombz version is quite faithful to the original, but female vocals by Anita Chellemah (formerly of British New Wave act Toto Coelo, who did “I Eat Cannibals”) and the high-energy guitar of Andy McCoy (formerly of Finnish glam band Hanoi Rocks) set it apart somewhat.
