Dorcas Society | the Thanksgiving

Saturday, May 10th, 2008

A Dorcas Society is a local group of people, usually based in a church, with a mission of providing clothing to the poor.

The original society was founded in Douglas, Isle of Man on December 1, 1834, as part of the community’s thanksgiving for being spared from an outbreak of cholera. The poorer families in town had their clothes and bedding destroyed as part of the effort to prevent the disease. Today there are other Dorcas societies around the world, providing clothing and other physical needs.

The society is named after a character (Tabitha, also called Dorcas) described in the Acts of the Apostles (Chapter 9, v. 36).

Rocket Records | Elton John’s Christmas

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

The Rocket Record Company was a record label founded by Elton John, with Bernie Taupin, Gus Dudgeon and Steve Brown among others, in 1972. The name is from the hit, “Rocket Man”. The label, originally distributed in the UK by EMI and in the US by MCA Records (which Elton John was also signed to.) The first artists signed to the label were Stackridge, who completed two albums for Rocket after moving from MCA. It also became the home of Cliff Richard, Neil Sedaka, Colin Blunstone, The Hudson Brothers, Blue, Kiki Dee and the Dutch band Solution. After Elton John left his British label, DJM Records in 1976, his records were also released on the Rocket Records label on both sides of the Atlantic.

In the US and Canada, Elton John’s residency on his own label was short-lived. After only one album, Blue Moves, and a couple of singles (including the mega hits “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” and “Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word”) he returned to MCA. This might have been due to MCA dropping Rocket, resulting in the label’s move to RCA distribution. The label was discontinued in the US in the early 1980s, then relaunched in 1995 with Elton John’s Made in England album, distributed by Island Records. 1997’s The Big Picture and “Candle in the Wind” were distributed in the US by stepsister A&M Records.

In the UK, Elton John’s records were continuously on Rocket from 1976 onwards. In 1978 the distribution moved to Phonogram Records, then to Mercury Records in 1995. By this time, Elton John was the only artist on the label.

Worldwide ownership of Elton John’s music was consolidated when MCA Records’ then-parent Seagram bought out PolyGram, the owners of Island, Mercury, and A&M - in 1998.

In 1999, when Rocket was being distributed by Universal Music’s daughter Island Def Jam Records, the label was shut down. However, the logo still appeared on all new Elton John releases through 2004’s Peachtree Road. The name was also resurrected in 2006 for the eponymous Platinum Weird album.

Harvard Step Test | links Step

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

The Harvard Step Test is a type of cardiac stress test for detecting and/or diagnosing cardiovascular disease.
It also is a good measurement of fitness, and your ability to recover after a strenuous exercise. The more quickly your heart rate returns to resting, the better shape you are in.

It is a kind of cardiovascular endurance test. The test computes the capability to exercise continuously for extended intervals of time without tiring. The subject (person who is taking the test) steps up and down on a platform at a height of about 45 cm. at a rate of 30 steps per minute for 5 minutes or until exhaustion. Exhaustion is the point at which the subject cannot maintain the stepping rate for 15 seconds. The subject immediately sits down on completion of the test, and the heartbeats are counted for 1 to 1.5, 2 to 2.5, and 3 to 3.5 minutes.

The best VO2 max (result for harvard step) was recorded by Nick Cooke of Melbourne.

Hot dog bun | the B-Side Ho! Ho!

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

A hot dog bun is a type of bun shaped specifically to contain a hot dog. There are two basic types: top loading, which is popular in New England, and side loading, preferred in the South and Midwest United States.

The advantages to a top loader are that it holds the hot dog securely and fits nicely into little three sided paper boxes. Top loaders are generally baked side by side and torn apart as needed, leaving a flat side surface for grilling.

Side loaders tend to be doughier, so are more likely to successfully sop up all the juices from chili or sauerkraut without falling apart.

Bath chair | versions It was

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

A bath chair — or Bath chair — is a wheeled vehicle with a folding hood, which can be used open or closed, and a glass front, mounted on three or four wheels and drawn or pushed by hand. It is so named after its similarity in appearance to an old fashioned bath. If required, the chair can be drawn by a donkey or small pony, when it is mounted on four wheels, with the usual turning arrangement. James Heath, of Bath, who flourished rather before the middle of the 18th century, was the inventor.

Later versions were a type of a wheelchair (as illustrated) which is pushed by an attendant, rather than pulled by an animal — in the 19th century they were often seen at spa resorts such as Buxton. Some versions incorporated a steering device for the use of the invalid.

    IHN | Beginning around

    Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

IHN is an acronym for “In His Name” which some people tend to use at the beginning of email. Those people believe that they should start each piece of writing with the name of God. According to Qur’an when Solomon wanted to write a letter he used the Basmala phrase. It is believed that prophet Mohammad started all of his letters with the Basmala. They believe that other prophets also started their written works, as well as their speeches, with the name of God. Using IHN at the beginning of an email is a way to say “Bismillah” or “In The Name of God”.
