Christmas (song) | christmas party favors

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

Christmas” is a song written by Pete Townshend and is the seventh song on the Who’s rock opera Tommy. The song tells how on Christmas morning, Tommy’s father (others claim it is both of Tommy’s parents) is worried about Tommy’s future, and soul. He claims “Tommy doesn’t know what day it is/He doesn’t know who Jesus was or what praying is,” and he wonders “How can he be saved/From the eternal grave?”

Musical themes

Musically, Christmas introduces the See Me, Feel Me reprise. Also there is a short “Can You Hear Me” reprise that will be repeated in the song Tommy Can You Hear Me.

That same Christmas, Tommy is given a game of pinball, foreshadowing to the events that take place in “Pinball Wizard”

Step aerobics | External links Step Into

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

Step Aerobics was innovated by Gin Miller circa 1989.

It is distinguished from other forms of aerobic exercise by its use of an elevated platform (the step), which enables a more vigorous workout than can be achieved with “regular” aerobics. The intensity of the workout can be tailored to individual taste by inserting risers under the step to increase the height of the step. Step aerobics classes are offered at many gyms and fitness centers which have a group exercise program.

Moves & Technique

Often moves are referred to as Reebok step moves in reference to one of the first makers of the plastic step commonly used in gyms.

The “basic” step involves stepping first one foot then the other on top of the step and then stepping the first foot and then the other back to the floor. A “right basic” would involve stepping the right foot up, then the left, then returning to the floor alternating right then left.

Many instructors of step will switch immediately between different moves, for example between a right basic and a left basic without any intervening moves, forcing people to “tap” their foot instead of shifting weight. However, one form of step is called tap-free or smooth step in which feet always alternate without the ambiguous “taps” that can make learning step difficult for beginners. This requires a bit of foresight and planning by the instructor in order to insert a transitional or switching move that maintains the natural alternating weight shift akin to walking. For example, from a series of right basics one may insert a “knee up” (which involves stepping up and lifting the knee and returning the lifted leg to the ground, thereby switching feet) and then continuing to a left basic. However, this requires planning and the extra beats required for the transition move.

Common Moves include:

  • Basic Step
  • Corner knee
  • Repeater knee
  • T-Step
  • Over-the-Top
  • Lunges
  • V-Step
  • Straddle Down
  • L-Step
  • Split Step
  • I-Step

Choreography

Many instructors will prepare a set of moves that will be executed together to form the choreography of the class. Usually, the choreography will be timed to 32 beats in a set, ideally switching legs so that the set can be repeated in a mirrored fashion. A set may consist of many different moves and the different moves may have different durations. For example, a basic step as described above takes 4 beats (for the 4 steps that the person takes). Similarly, the “knee up” move also takes 4 beats. Another common move, the repeater knee, is an 8-beat move.

Classes vary in the level of choreography. Basic level classes will tend to have a series of relatively basic moves strung together into a sequence. More advanced classes incorporate dance elements such as turns, mambos, and stomps. These elements are put together into 2-3 routines in each class. One learns the routines during the class and then all are performed at the end of the class. Regardless of the complexity of the choreography, most instructors offer various options for different levels of intensity/dance ability while teaching the routines.

Laura Miller (Matlock) | the band The Wedding

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

Laura Miller is a fictional character portrayed by Laura Robbins in the television series Matlock and is the goddaughter of Ben Matlock. The last time she saw her godfather was 11 years prior to her wedding, at her mother’s funeral. She no longer lived in Mt. Harlan at this point, instead working in an Atlanta-area mall in a clothing store as an assistant manager in Marietta. When she came back, she had not met his daughter, Leanne. Her parents owned a bakery. She intended to marry Paul (portrayed by Robert Praigo), a teacher from Mt. Harlan, whose dad was a veterinarian.

Since her parents had both died, she decided to get married in Atlanta rather than Mt. Harlan and she asked Ben to give her away at the wedding. She planned not to have a reception, since there wasn’t much in the budget for it, but Leanne proffered to chip in for the reception, and to host the reception for the wedding at Ben’s house.

She had a brother, Chuck. Brad, another person attending the wedding, was angry at Chuck for disabling his brother, Frank. Frank was a football player being scouted by pro football teams, and was paralyzed from the waist down when Chuck drove his car into a tree, and Brad punched him out at the bachelor party. Chuck was framed for Brad’s murder for the fight they had at the party, and the knife found in the back of Laura’s house.

At the wedding practice, Ben told Laura that the last time he did this (at Leanne’s wedding), it didn’t turn out so well. Laura didn’t know Leanne was divorced, and Ben told her that Leanne married outside her species. “He was a jackass,” he said of Peter MacIntyre (Robert Desiderio).

Johann Rall | Ho! Ho! Who’d

Friday, May 16th, 2008

Johann Gottlieb Rall (ca. 1726 - December 26, 1776 ) was a German colonel in command of Hessian troops in Trenton, New Jersey.

Early life and career

Rall was probably born as a so-called “soldier child” ca. 1725. He was a son of Captain Joachim Rall from Stralsund, who served in the regiment of Major General Donop. The first mention of Johann Rall was as a new cadet of the same regiment on 1 March 1740, commanded at this time by Colonel Prince Casimir von Isenburg of Isenburg-Birstein.

He was promoted to warrant officer on 25 July 1741; to second lieutenant on 28 August 1745; and to captain on 10 May 1753. Rall was promoted to major on 7 May 1760, under Major General Bischhausen and transferred, in January 1763, into the Stein garrison regiment, where he was appointed lieutenant colonel. On 22 April 1771, he was transferred to the Mansbach Infantry Regiment as a colonel. He became commander of the regiment in January 1772.

During this time, Rall fought in the War of the Austrian Succession and participated in campaigns in Bavaria, on the Rhine, in the Netherlands, and served in Scotland. He fought in the Seven Years’ War (also called the French and Indian War) and was involved in many battles. From September 1771 until August 1772, he was in Russia and fought for Catherine the Great under Count Orlov in the Fourth Russo-Turkish War.

The American Revolution

By 1776, Rall belonged to the infantry regiment of the 1st Division under General Phillip Leopold von Heister and commanded approximately 1,200 men fighting for Great Britain in the American Revolutionary War. He was at the Battle of Brooklyn at Flatbush, the Battle of White Plains, the Battle of Long Island, and figured prominently in the Battle of Trenton.

General George Washington crossed the Delaware River with his troops on the way to Trenton, New Jersey. The Hessian regiments, camped in and around Trenton, were attacked and decisively defeated by the American Continental Army. The Hessians had supposedly let their guard down to celebrate the Christmas holiday, and Rall himself was misled by John Honeyman, a spy of Washington who convincingly posed as a loyalist. According to one account, Rall was busy playing cards the night before the attack when he was handed a note from a local Loyalist who’d seen Washingtons forces gathering. He simply pocketed the warning without bothering to read it and went back to his card game. In this surprise attack on 26 December 1776, Rall was mortally wounded in the battle by a bullet wound.

General Washington and Major General Greene visited the dying Colonel after the battle, and rendered him thereby a last military honor. He died in the late evening at his headquarters, on Warren Street in the “House of Stacy Potts”, at that time called King Street.
Rall was buried in the cemetery of the First Presbyterian Church in Trenton on East State Street. The worn inscription on his tombstone reads, “Here lies Colonel Rall, for him, all is over”.

Ride

The Go Coaster is primarily for children and therefore has very small cars. While two children can easily fit into a single car, most adults would have to travel alone (or with a small child). Guests board a train fashioned from acorns and scavenged parts. Guests travel through Gadget’s salvaged old comb, soup can and thread spool, and over a small lake.

Lodewijk Elzevir | To Be Continued

Monday, February 18th, 2008

Lodewijk Elzevir (c. 1546 - 1617), sometimes Louis Elzevir or Elsevier was a significant Dutch printer. He was the founder of the House of Elzevir, which printed, for example, the work of Galileo, at a time when his work was suppressed for religious reasons.

He produced his first book at Leiden in 1583 and under his descendants the business continued until 1791. The printing house was instrumental in the publication of important work in science. Atypical of other printers of the era, Elzevir books focused on sturdiness rather than elegance and legibility over ornate characters. His books were usually smaller with narrow margins. Christopher van Dyck was one of the type designers. Most of the work was published in Latin.

His son Bonaventure Elzevir and grandson Abraham Elzevir continued and expanded the business.

Krewe of OAK | Hit Parade

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

The Krewe of OAK is a small neighborhood New Orleans Mardi Gras krewe and parade held in the Carrollton neighborhood of New Orleans, Louisiana. The parade starts and ends on Oak Street, presumably the origin of the name, although members say that OAK stands for “Outrageous And Kinky”.

The krewe’s Carnival parade is held on the Friday night before Mardi Gras Day. OAK also holds a “Mid Summer Mardi Gras” celebration, usually in August. The Krewe Ball is held at the Maple Leaf Bar, and parades start and end outside that neighborhood landmark.

The Krewe of OAK is an example of neighborhood Carnival celebrations. Since the 1980s it is the only parade still marching in Carrollton during the Carnival season, as the neighborhood’s older Krewe, the Krewe of Carrollton, now parades on Saint Charles Avenue and Canal Street, one of the routes which the city government now strongly pressures parades over a certain size to follow.

The parade traditionally features golf cart floats with effigy heads of notable Carrollton characters, including James Booker. Additionally, there are jazz brass bands, dance troupes, and home-made floats and costumes.

The 2005 Krewe of OAK Midsummer Mardi Gras Parade on Saturday night, 27 August, 2005, was the last parade held in New Orleans before Hurricane Katrina.
