Royal Australian Navy Memorial, Canberra | themed parade

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

The Royal Australian Navy Memorial on ANZAC Parade in Canberra, the national capital of Australia, honours the sailors who have served to protect the nation.

In 10 July 1911, the Commonwealth Naval Forces were renamed the Royal Australian Navy. The RAN has served, in all oceans, in conflict and peace, since then.

The memorial was unveiled by Queen Elizabeth II on 3 March 1986, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the formation of the RAN.

Design

Bronze figures feature in the memorial and show the daily activities of naval life; the geometric forms, such as the anchor chain, depict elements of a ship. The torrents of water complement the dynamic forms of the work. (The memorials along ANZAC Parade were specifically exempted from water restrictions during the drought of 2005.)

The memorial is also known as Sailors and Ships - Interaction and Interdependence, and was designed and executed by Ante Dabro in collaboration with Lester Firth and Associates, and Robert Woodward.

Christmas cookies | Christmas

Friday, January 11th, 2008

Christmas cookies are traditionally sugar cookies (though other flavors may be used based on family traditions and individual preferences) cut into various shapes related to Christmas. In the United States, since the 1930s, children have left cookies and milk on a table for Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, though many people simply consume the cookies themselves. The cookies are often cut into such shapes as those of candy canes, reindeer, and holly leaves. Oreos are also popular.

Burgess | it was originally

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

Burgess originally meant a freeman of a borough or burgh. It later came to mean an elected or un-elected official of a municipality, or the representative of a borough in the English House of Commons.

The word is linguistically close to the French “Bourgeois” which originally also meant an inhabitant of town of city, but later acquired many other meanings not shared by “Burgess”, especially being the basis for Bourgeoisie.

Christmas creep | Christmas

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

Christmas creep is the commercial phenomenon of merchants and retailers exploiting the commercialized status of Christmas (see Christmas season) earlier and earlier every year. It is most often attributed to the desire of many merchants to take advantage of particularly heavy Christmas-related shopping well before Black Friday in the US and before Halloween in Canada and the UK. It can apply for other holidays as well, notably Valentine’s Day, Easter and Mother’s Day. The key for holiday creep is for retailers to lengthen their selling season for seasonal merchandise in order to maximize profit and to give early-bird shoppers a headstart on that holiday.

Federalist No. 30 | External

Monday, November 26th, 2007

Federalist No. 30 is an essay by Alexander Hamilton, the thirtieth of the Federalist Papers. It was published on December 28, 1787 under the pseudonym Publius, the name under which all the Federalist Papers were published. This is the first of seven essays by Hamilton on the then-controversial issue of taxation. It is titled, “Concerning the General Power of Taxation.”

Brief Precis

Hamilton details that taxes are the life-force of a government, and that it will not function without them. The power to collect taxes deemed necessary is crucial for the government, and few deny that. Hamilton then details the differences between internal and external taxes. He argues that the federal government needs a power of taxation equal to its necessities, both present and future. External taxes alone cannot provide enough revenue for a government as extensive as the one proposed, especially in a time of war.
