Rick Jones (television presenter) | ticket event

Friday, December 28th, 2007

Rick Jones was one of the best-known faces on BBC children’s television programmes during the 1960s and 1970s.

Canadian by birth, he began his TV career as a presenter of Playschool, a daily programme for pre-school children, in which he played guitar and sang. In 1972, he became the star of Fingerbobs another popular show for younger children, in which Jones created characters from finger puppets made of paper.

He went to have success as a musician (keyboards/vocals) fronting the British country rock band Meal Ticket. Jones had a superb emotive voice and some of his songs recorded with Meal Ticket (Snow, Last port of call, Laughing Daughter) are wonderful. The song “Better Believe it Babe” featured as the theme for the BBC television Play for Today “The Flipside of Dominick Hide”. After Meal Ticket broke up he wrote and appeared in the musical “Flash Fearless vs The Zorg Women” in Los Angeles. In 2001 he reunited with Meal Ticket for a one off gig at a london pub. Christmas Sunday | Christmas

Monday, December 24th, 2007

Christmas Sunday is a name for 26 December when it is a Sunday.

In the United Kingdom, if Christmas Day falls on a Saturday, 26 December is correctly referred to as “Christmas Sunday”, and Boxing Day moves to 27 December. However, since 1999 common practice has seen 26 December called “Boxing Day” even when it falls on a Sunday.

In Western Christianity, the first Sunday after Christmas is called “the First Sunday of Christmas”.

The christmas sunday is a special time of year for all. It symobolizes the passing of the year.

CB Simulator | band The Wedding Present

Friday, December 21st, 2007

CompuServe CB Simulator was the first online chat service. It was developed by a CompuServe executive, Alexander “Sandy” Trevor, and released by CompuServe in 1980.

At that time, most people were familiar with Citizens’ band radio, often abbreviated as CB radio, but multi-user chat did not yet exist and instant messaging was largely unknown. CompuServe CB used the CB radio paradigm to help users understand the new concept. Like CB radio it had 40 “channels” and commands like “tune”, “squelch”, and “monitor.” CompuServe CB quickly became the largest single product on CompuServe despite virtually no marketing. When 40 channels wasn’t enough, additional “bands” were added, such as the “Adult” band.

The first online wedding occurred on CompuServe CB, and worldwide fans organized events to meet in the “real world” people they had met in CB. Later, enhancements to CompuServe CB were made to enable multiplayer games, digital pictures, multimedia, and large conferences. For example, Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones held the first online multimedia conference using CompuServe CB from London on December 7, 1995.

One of the first online weddings occurred between *MilesTeg* & *Cinderella* on May 4, 1991. While the couple said their vows at the Silver Bells Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas, *TennesseeBunny* was dialed in with a laptop and a 2400 baud modem and broadcast the event play by play. Later the couple celebrated at the “reception” during the Vegas CB Bash at the Palace Station Hotel. The wedding was attended by 20+ CB regulars in person and over 50 virtual guests online. The couple was still married as of 2007.

Motion illusion | appears

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007
It has been suggested that this article or section be merged into Illusory motion. (Discuss)

One type of motion illusion is a type of optical illusion in which a static image appears to be moving due to the cognitive effects of interacting color contrasts and shape position.

Another type of motion illusion that causes an optical illusion is when a moving object appears to be moving in a path other than what is perceived by the brain. An example of this can be demonstrated by placing a colored filter over ones eye of the observer, and swinging a ball back and forth in front of them. To the observer the ball appears to be swinging in a circular motion.

Rock and roll revival | Who’d Be

Friday, December 14th, 2007

Rock and Roll Revival was a back-to-basics musical trend of the late 1960s and early 1970s, in a sort-of backlash against the heavier rock sounds then in vogue.

As the Sixties ended, several early rock and rollers like Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Bo Diddley, who’d been out of fashion since the British Invasion, experienced a resurgence in popularity, performing their old hits to a mix of old and new fans. Rock and roll revival festivals became popular, and anticipated the “oldies show” package tours of later years.

Sha Na Na performed “At the Hop” at the Woodstock Festival in 1969, in the revival spirit.

John Lennon and Yoko Ono had a surprise hit album in 1970, with Live Peace in Toronto 1969, recorded at a revival show in September 1969. Appearing on the spur of the moment, with a hastily-assembed band (comprised of Lennon, Ono, Eric Clapton, Klaus Voormann and Alan White), Lennon led off their set with familiar songs (like “Blue Suede Shoes” and “Money (That’s What I Want)”) that suited the mood of the program.

Half-Fast Walking Club | Parade

Friday, December 7th, 2007

The Half-Fast Walking Club is a New Orleans Mardi Gras krewe led by Pete Fountain. Originally all on foot, in recent decades it has also featured one or two small floats. Fountain and other local jazz musicians play through much of the parade. The krewe’s current route, basically unchanged since the mid-1970s, starts very early on Mardi Gras morning, at world famous Commander’s Palace Restaurant on Washington Avenue in the Garden District. The krewe then proceeds downtown on St. Charles Avenue and after a brief interlude on Canal Street, enters the French Quarter at Bourbon Street winds around the Quarter and eventually ends up at the New Orleans Riverfront Hilton in the early afternoon.

The “Half-Fast” is one of the best known marching Krewes that parades in New Orleans on Mardi Gras. The original name was “The Half-Assed Walking Club” and was an excuse to take a “lubricated” musical stroll down the parade route. Pete changed the name under pressure exerted by the parade organizers. On Mardi Gras Day 2007 Pete once again joined his Half Fast Walking Club, having missed the event in 2006 due to illness.
