Christmas Wrapping | christmas party favors

Friday, July 11th, 2008

“Christmas Wrapping” (sometimes misspelled as “Christmas Wrappings”) is a Christmas song performed in 1981 by The Waitresses and later covered by the Spice Girls. Save Ferris also recorded a version with different lyrics.

The song is narrated from the point of view of a busy single woman who is adamant that she will try to sit-out the exhausting Christmas period, not participating in the traditional Christmas activities (except for making dinner, see below).

She reveals that, during the course of the year, she has attempted to meet up with a man she encountered in a ski shop the previous year. Despite the couple’s attempts to meet, a succession of mishaps conspires to keep them apart.

Finally on Christmas Eve, while the protagonist (after stating that A&P provided her with “the world’s smallest turkey”) is doing last-minute shopping for cranberries at a local convenience store, ends up running into the man after discovering that he, too, forgot to buy cranberries.

This coincidence seems to hint that the narrator, and therefore the listener, shouldn’t completely abandon their faith in the magic of Christmas.

Their slogan was “Great Sounds of Christmas” but was unsuccessful at producing these sounds. The music and album covers were cheesy at best, and overwhelmingly generic.

Skipping Christmas | christmas party favors

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

Skipping Christmas (2001) is a comedy novella by noted American author John Grisham. In 2004 the novella was made into a movie titled Christmas with the Kranks.

Plot summary

The story focuses on how Luther Krank and his wife Nora tried to avoid doing the traditional Christmas frenzy.

The plan was hatched by Luther himself after he and his wife took their daughter Blair to the airport for a year long mission to Peru with the Peace Corps. After calculating how much money they spent last Christmas, Luther decides to take a 10-day Caribbean Cruise with his wife this year instead of celebrating Christmas the usual way. No Christmas shopping, no Christmas trees, not even the traditional Christmas party they hosted. Nora reluctantly agreed at first but as the day of the cruise approaches she thinks it’s a great idea as they all miss the crazy commotion people had to endure during the season. Or so they thought……

Blair suddenly calls on Christmas Eve to tell them that she’s at the airport in Miami,FL and she’s coming home with her fiance as a surprise for them. Blair also told them that her fiance hasn’t been to the U.S.A. and would like to see how they spend Christmas, after Blair told him about the decorations, Music, snow and the Christmas party their family always hosted.

All of a sudden the Kranks have to prepare a Christmas party in 4 hours, not to mention getting the house decorated in time for the arrival of Blair from the airport.

Luther’s view on Christmas changes a lot throughout this novel. In the beginning he is looking forward to his cruise the Island Princess. The ten day cruise, full of food and fun was a must. In the end of the, book Luther realizes that family is more important as he reluctantly decides not to go on the cruise.

Groomsman | The Wedding Present

Thursday, June 26th, 2008
This article refers to the wedding participant. A Groomsman is also a type of lawn ornament.

In a North American/Australian or British wedding a groomsman or usher is one of the (usually) male attendants to the bridegroom in a wedding ceremony. Usually the groom selects his closest friends and/or relatives to serve as a groomsmen, and it is considered an honor to be selected. From his groomsmen, the groom chooses one to serve as best man.
In a typical “Anglosphere” white wedding, the duties of a groomsman typically include some or all of the following:

  • helping the best man plan the bachelor party(U.S.)/Stag Night(U.K)/Buck’s Night(Aus.) for the groom
  • ushering guests to their seats before the ceremony
  • escorting the bridesmaids down the aisle during the ceremony and reception
  • giving speeches and toasts (however, this duty is usually performed by the best man)
  • and sometimes dancing with bridesmaids and other single female guests at the reception

The groom may also designate other male friends and relatives to act as ushers, whose main task is ushering guests to their seats before the ceremony.

In a military officers wedding, the role of groomsman is replaced by Swordsmen of the Sword Honor Guard. They are usually picked as close personal friends of the groom who have served with him/her. Their role includes forming the traditional sword arch for the married couple and guests to walk through.

Gifts

To show appreciation and gratitude, the bridegroom will traditionally purchase gifts for his best man and groomsmen. These gifts are generally known as groomsmen gifts. Groomsmen gifts serve as both a thank you to all the groomsmen or ushers who take the time (and spend the money) to be a part of your wedding celebration. Groomsmen gifts are also a way to commemorate the special day for years to come.

Traditionally, the bridegroom will give a gift to both his father, the bride’s father and the ringbearer.

Wedding march | The Wedding Present on

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

A wedding march is a piece of music played during a wedding, usually during the entrance of the bride (processional) or the departure of the married couple at the end (recessional).

Famous wedding marches

The traditional processional at Western weddings is the Bridal Chorus from Richard Wagner’s Lohengrin, while a traditional recessional is the Wedding March from Felix Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

It is ironic to note that while their musical works are often paired today, Mendelssohn, a Jewish composer, was a target of Wagner’s anti-Semitic essay Das Judenthum in der Musik.
