Annales Alamannici | Continued and

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

The core text of the Annales Alamannici covers the years 709 through to 799. Spread over several Swabian monasteries, the annals were continued independently in several places, in the Reichenau Abbey up to 939 (continued by Hermannus Contractus), in St. Gallen up to 926. The St. Gallen version was continued from 927 to 1059 as the Annales Sangallenses maiores.

Wienie (Disney) | also Walt

Sunday, May 4th, 2008
This is about the theme park term. For its slang variations, see weenie, wiener or weiner.

A wienie, also called a visual magnet, is a term used by Walt Disney Imagineering for a visual element in a theme park which can be seen from a distance and which serves to draw a guest further in.

The term, introduced to Disney by Walt Disney himself, originates from the cliché that a carrot (or other food) held in front of a horse makes the horse walk forward. In the Disneyland park, the primary wienie is Sleeping Beauty Castle. People that arrive at that point will then see other Wienies like the Tomorrowland rocketship or Frontierland’s Mark Twain, which will in turn guide them towards further attractions.

Streets of Forbes | Twas’ the

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

“Streets of Forbes” is an Australian folksong about the death of bushranger Ben Hall. The song is one of the most well known elements of the Australian folk repertoire. It has been recorded by many folk and popular artists and groups including The Bushwhackers, Gary Shearston and Weddings Parties Anything. Paul Kelly made his public debut singing the Australian folk song ‘Streets Of Forbes’ to a Hobart audience in 1974[1]. The Streets of Forbes is usually listed as traditional or anonymous, but Gary Shearston writes that “there are reasons for thinking John McGuire, [Ben Hall’s brother in law,] may well have been the original author” [2].

Come all you Lachlan men and a sorrowful tale I’ll tell,
The story of a decent man who through misfortune fell,
His name it was Ben Hall, a man of high renown,
Who was hunted from his station, and was like a dog shot down.
For years he roamed the roads, and he showed the traps some fun,
One thousand pounds was on his head, with Gilbert and John Dunn.
Ben parted from his comrades, the outlaws did agree,
To give away bushranging and to cross the briny sea.
Ben went to Goobang Creek, and that was his downfall
For riddled like a sieve was the valiant Ben Hall,
‘Twas early in the morning upon the fifth of May
That the seven police surrounded him as fast asleep they lay.
Billy Dargin he was chosen to shoot the outlaw dead,
The troopers then fired madly and they filled him full of lead,
They rolled him in his blanket and strapped him to prad[3],
And they led him through the streets of Forbes, to show the prize they had.

Ho, Ho, Ho | Christmas

Monday, February 18th, 2008

Ho, Ho, Ho (officially titled “VH1 Presents RuPaul Ho Ho Ho”) is the 1997 album of Christmas music released by drag queen, singer and actress RuPaul. The album was a combination of original music, standards and comedy vingettes. Most of the traditional songs were given a campy twist. The title is a double entendre: though it is a phrase associated with Christmas (it is the sound of Santa’s laughter expressed through onomatopoeia,) the term “ho” also refers to a whore or prostitute. The album’s cover features three scantily-clad versions of RuPaul, and the back cover features her legs with panties around the ankles; these are the “three hoes”.

The album was tied-in to a television Christmas special from The RuPaul Show on VH1. Much of the humor on the album is of a risqué nature, making it quite different from traditionally wholesome holiday albums. For instance, the classic “All I Want For Christmas” is turned into a thumping dance song with lyrical changes requesting breast implants, a tummy tuck and rhinoplasty, so that (as she sings) “I can look real purty!”.

The name of the label originates from a Brighton street that Adam used to live in.

This difficulty caused problems to the supply of the album ‘You can be Special Too’ by Evil Nine, only 1000 copies reached the stores, and it became a much sought after record, some fetching up to $90 on EBay. Christmas Carole | Christmas themed Wishes

Friday, January 25th, 2008

Christmas Carole was a fictional character in a comic strip in the UK comic The Beano. Lavishly drawn in pencils by Keith Page, it first appeared in issue 3259, dated 1 January 2005, as part of Comic Idol - a selection of three comic strips to be voted in by Beano readers (the other two being Zap Zodiac and Hugh Dunnit). Appearing in the comic throughout January, she eventually lost out to Zap Zodiac, who was revealed as the winner in issue 3268, dated 5 March 2005.

The premise of the strip can be summed up in the tagline “She wishes it could be Christmas every day!”. Carole permanently wore a Father Christmas hat and t-shirt featuring a holly design on it, and would frequently persevere to turn everything Christmas related, much to the annoyance of her parents.

Another Rock N’ Roll Christmas | at Christmas

    Monday, January 21st, 2008

“Another Rock N’ Roll Christmas” is a popular 1984 Christmas song by Gary Glitter.

The song is about the fun of Christmas and refers to Rock and Roll music throughout, examples being the lyrics “You’ll be rocking in your stocking” and “Come on, Rock and Roll for old St. Nick“. The song sold very well, hitting the Top 10 in the UK Singles Chart, becoming Glitter’s most successful song since 1975. Though he was still touring regularly when the song came out, Glitter has often credited “Another Rock N’ Roll Christmas” as a song that gave him a huge resurgence in popularity.

The song was included on the album Boys Will Be Boys, issued in 1985 and was reissued many times, both as a single (including a collectors picture disc) and on other albums.

The track was one of the most played Christmas songs in the UK for many years and is still played today, though not as heavily, following Glitter’s conviction for possessing child pornography.
