Stand-off | a stand-alone

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

A stand-off, with regards warfare and weaponry, is the distance that one can safely attack an enemy while still being beyond the effective-range of their opponent.

For example: if a soldier has a rifle with an effective-range of 500 meters, and his enemy has a rifle with a range of only 300 meters, then that soldier has a “stand-off” range of 200 meters.

A similar term is found in the sport of boxing. This term is “reach”. The distance that a boxer may hit his opponent with out moving forward, is his “reach”. It is desirable for a boxer to have a greater “reach” than his opponent. The difference in “reach” from one boxer to another is the “stand-off”.

Porcupine caribou | Caribou. It

Friday, December 21st, 2007

The Porcupine caribou or Grant’s Caribou (Rangifer tarandus grantii) herd is located in the northern Yukon and Alaska. Their name does not derive from the animal porcupine, but from the Porcupine River which runs through a large part of their range. Though numbers fluctuate, the herd is comprised of over ~125,000 animals which migrate over 1,500 miles (900 km) a year between their winter range and calving grounds. They are the primary sustenance of the Gwichʼin, a First Nations/Alaska Native people, who traditionally built their communities based upon the caribou’s migration patterns. They are also routinely hunted by other peoples, including the Inupiat, Inuvialuit, Hän, and Northern Tutchone. There is currently debate on whether possible future oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, which encompasses much of its historical calving grounds, will have a severe negative impact on the caribou population. For more information on this topic, see Arctic Refuge drilling controversy.

Mickey’s Mouse Tracks | Mickey

Friday, December 7th, 2007

Mickey’s Mouse Tracks was a television series on The Disney Channel which featured Disney cartoons and animated short films, dating from before the advent of Disney Channel. A similar show was Donald’s Quack Attack. The show premeired in 1992 and was made to replace Good Morning, Mickey!. It wasn’t possible to know what episode was going to be shown on any given day, but the show did feature showings of some shorts that don’t show up on The Ink and Paint Club along with some shorts made by the Fleischer brothers, and clips from the animated features, such as Pinocchio. In the late 1990s, the show was given a major overhaul as Mickey Mouse Works, later given a plot as House of Mouse.

Krewe of OAK | Parade

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

The Krewe of OAK is a small neighborhood New Orleans Mardi Gras krewe and parade held in the Carrollton neighborhood of New Orleans, Louisiana. The parade starts and ends on Oak Street, presumably the origin of the name, although members say that OAK stands for “Outrageous And Kinky”.

The krewe’s Carnival parade is held on the Friday night before Mardi Gras Day. OAK also holds a “Mid Summer Mardi Gras” celebration, usually in August. The Krewe Ball is held at the Maple Leaf Bar, and parades start and end outside that neighborhood landmark.

The Krewe of OAK is an example of neighborhood Carnival celebrations. Since the 1980s it is the only parade still marching in Carrollton during the Carnival season, as the neighborhood’s older Krewe, the Krewe of Carrollton, now parades on Saint Charles Avenue and Canal Street, one of the routes which the city government now strongly pressures parades over a certain size to follow.

The parade traditionally features golf cart floats with effigy heads of notable Carrollton characters, including James Booker. Additionally, there are jazz brass bands, dance troupes, and home-made floats and costumes.

The 2005 Krewe of OAK Midsummer Mardi Gras Parade on Saturday night, 27 August, 2005, was the last parade held in New Orleans before Hurricane Katrina.

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

The Chemical Wedding is a heavy metal album released in 1998 (see 1998 in music) by Bruce Dickinson in collaboration with guitarist and producer Roy Z. The album draws some inspiration from the works of William Blake - of whom some paintings are featured in its artwork, as well as spoken word excerpts from Blake’s Prophetic Works - although the name of the album and its title track derives from the Rosicrucian manifest the Chymical Wedding of Christian Rosenkreutz. As with the previous album, it featured Iron Maiden guitarist Adrian Smith, former (and once again current) bandmate of Dickinson.
