Little Christmas | christmas party favors

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

Little Christmas, or Nollaig Bheag in the Irish language, is one of the traditional names in Ireland for January 6, more commonly known in the rest of the world as the Epiphany. It is so called because it was, until the adoption of the Gregorian calendar, the day on which Christmas Day was celebrated. It is the traditional end of the Christmas season and the last day of the Christmas holidays for both Primary and Secondary schools.

The name Little Christmas is also found in Slovenian (mali božič).

It is also known as Nollaig na mBan (Women’s Christmas), so called because of the tradition (still very strong in Cork, though only just surviving in the rest of the country) of Irish men taking on all the household duties on that day and giving their spouses a day off. Most women will either hold parties or go out to celebrate the day with their friends, sisters, mothers, aunts etc. Bars and restaurants have a near 100% female clientele on this night. Children often buy presents for their mothers and grandmothers and it closely resembles Mother’s Day in this respect.

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

Castlecroft is a suburb of Wolverhampton, West Midlands, located on the edge of the city, WSW of the city centre. It is situated where the Merry Hill, and Tettenhall Wightwick wards meet, and also borders South Staffordshire.

It has two distinct parts, divided by a former railway line. The eastern part is mostly 1930s private housing, the western part mostly 1950s Council housing. Castlecroft is where Smestow Secondary school and Castlecroft Primary school are situated. Bhylls Acre Primary school is also in the area, but thanks to historical accident, it falls under the jurisdiction of Staffordshire County Council.

The name Castlecroft is derivative of Castlecroft House, a large house that was converted into flats in 2004/2005. In the final years of Castlecroft House it was an hotel going by the name of Castlecroft House Hotel.

Tangos | performed by

Monday, April 28th, 2008

Tangos is a flamenco cante closely related in form and feeling to the Rumba. It is often performed as a finale to a Tientos. Its compass and llamada are the same as that of the Farruca and share the Farruca’s lively nature. However, Tangos is normally performed in the A Phrygian mode.

Tangos is distinct from the Rumba primarily through the guitar playing. In Rumba the guitar flows more freely, whereas in Tangos the accents on beats 2, 3 & 4 are marked clearly with heavy strumming.

Tangos flamenco is not related to Argentine Tango, besides binary compás (rhythm).

Duran Duran (1981 album) | remastered reissue

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

Duran Duran is an album by Duran Duran, originally released worldwide in 1981, and reissued to greater success in 1983.

The album reached #3 on the United Kingdom charts on 27 June 1981, and remained in the chart for 118 weeks, although the initial release was largely ignored in America. The 1983 reissue reached at #10 on the US charts, and remained on that chart for 87 weeks (although it was overshadowed by the ongoing American success of the Rio album from 1982). Duran Duran was certified platinum (a shipment of one million units) by the RIAA on 4 June, 1985.

Contents

Original release - 1981

Demos for the album were written and recorded at AIR Studios in late 1980, while one of Duran Duran’s influences, the band Japan, was recording Gentlemen Take Polaroids just down the hall.

The album was formally recorded in December of 1980 at various recording studios in London (as well as Chipping Norton Studios) with record producer Colin Thurston, shortly after Duran Duran signed their record deal with EMI. In interviews, the band has recalled the struggle to continue recording after hearing of the 8 December death of John Lennon.

Relatively primitive music videos for “Planet Earth” and “Careless Memories” were also filmed in December.

The first pressing of the album did not include the track “To The Shore”; it was added in second and subsequent pressings, and was also included in the 2003 remastered edition. The US version of this release used the ‘night version’ of “Planet Earth”.

The band’s first single was “Planet Earth” (released on 2 February, 1981) and it reached #12 on the UK charts on 21 February.

The band followed up with the release of “Careless Memories” on 20 April, 1981, but it only reached UK #37 (on 9 May).

The third single was to become the most successful from this album. “Girls On Film”, released 13 July, went to #5 in the UK on 25 July, before the notorious video was even filmed. That video (featuring topless women mud wrestling and other not-very-stylised depictions of sexual fetishes), was made with directors Godley & Creme, and was filmed in August just two weeks after MTV was launched in the United States, before anyone knew what an impact the music channel would have on the industry. The raunchy video created an uproar (it was consequently banned by the BBC and a heavily edited “day version” was aired on MTV), and the band enjoyed and capitalized on all the fuss.

Reissue - 1983

Duran Duran was re-released worldwide on 25 April 1983, after the wild success of their second album Rio in America gave the band another chance to market their first album there. The album sported different cover art and three changes to the track listing.

For this version of the album Capitol Records dropped “To The Shore”, and swapped the original ‘night version’ of “Planet Earth” for the more popular single version.

Most notably, they added the new track “Is There Something I Should Know?”, recorded with producer Ian Little at the end of 1982. This song was released in the UK as a stand-alone single on 19 March, 1983, and debuted in the #1 position on the UK charts on 26 March — Duran Duran were one of the very few acts since Elvis Presley and The Beatles to debut at the top, before the revamping of the chart system in the late 1980s made it a much easier goal to achieve. This was the band’s first number one record.

The “Is There Something I Should Know?” single also had great success in America, where it was released in late May: it reached #4 on the Billboard charts on 6 August, and sold more than a million copies.

The video was directed by future movie director Russell Mulcahy, and was one of the most popular videos of the year on MTV.

Replay Professional was a sound sampling product for the Atari ST. It came out in 1988.

It included a suite of offline DSP functions (Fast Fourier transform, a range of filters), MIDI sequencing and a drum machine.

Compact discs were a relatively new consumer product at that time, and the front cover used CD-like artwork, although no CD media was included and the programs themselves came on three 3.5 inch floppy disks.

Shawn McManus | Ho! Who’d

Sunday, February 17th, 2008

Shawn McManus (born June 30,1958 in Brookline, Massachusetts) is an American artist who entered the comic book field in the early 1980s with work for Heavy Metal and DC Comics.

McManus gained wider attention when he illustrated two 1980s issues of Swamp Thing written by Alan Moore. Since then he has drawn issues of Omega Men, Batman, Doctor Fate and a pair of limited series about the witch Thessaly written by Bill Willingham. Randy Lander reviewed the debut issue of The Sandman Presents: The Thessaliad:

This is mostly an issue to set the stage, to establish the world as one that is full of hidden magic and very abnormal things existing alongside normal life. McManus does a terrific job in depicting this type of thing. The realism of city streets or university buildings contrast nicely with the ghostly war dogs being used to hunt Thessaly, and the gore and destructive behavior demonstrated later on serves more as dark humor than disturbing violence. I also quite enjoyed the very normal designs for Thessaly and Fetch, which contrasts with their not-at-all normal lives.

McManus also drew most of A Game of You for Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman, and his other Sandman credits include The Sandman Presents: Taller Tales, The Sandman Presents: Thessaly, Witch for Hire, The Sandman: Fables & Reflections. Other Vertigo titles by McManus include Winter’s Edge 3.

His work on the Tom Strong series (America’s Best Comics) includes Tom Strong’s Terrific Tales 2 and Tom Strong 3. His story “Jenny Panic & the Bible of Dreams”, scripted by Steve Aylett, was collected in the hardback Tom Strong Collected Edition, Book Five, edited by Scott Dunbier.

For the June 1983 issue of Heavy Metal he collaborated with Bhob Stewart and John Coffey on Zenobia. Six months later, McManus and Stewart teamed with Jim McDermott on “Symbiosis”, also in Heavy Metal (December, 1983).

McManus’ artwork for Marvel Comics includes Peter Parker Spider-Man Annual ‘97 (1997) and Daredevil #351. In an interview with Kuljit Mithra, John Rozum, who scripted that issue of Daredevil, recalled:

I thought Shawn McManus’s art was great. I’d like to work with him again sometime, though we didn’t really work together here. At the time I wrote it, I had no idea who’d be drawing it. Shawn and I have never even met or spoken with each other. I always write full script though, and unlike some other artists, Shawn actually pays attention to the script. I think his artwork was a nice pairing with the story.

McManus has contributed to titles from a variety of other publishers, including Atomeka Press (A1), Dark Horse (Cheval Noir), Exhibit A Press (Wolff & Byrd: Counselors of the Macabre), First Comics (GrimJack), Image (Supreme), Malibu (The Man Called A-X) and DC’s Paradox Press (The Big Book of Freaks). More recently, he has worked on Leah Moore and John Reppion’s Wild Girl (Wildstorm, 2004-2005) with J.H. Williams III, about 13-year-old Rosa Torez who discovers that she can communicate with animals. At least one issue was inked by Andrew Pepoy, but for some issues McManus did all the penciling and inking.

In animation, he worked in 1987 on the series Dinosaucers.

His art earned him a nomination, with Alan Moore, for a 1985 Jack Kirby award for “Pog” in Swamp Thing 32. The story, an inventive science fictional reinterpretation of Walt Kelly’s Pogo, was written by Moore specifically for McManus, who rose to the challenge with an appropriate Kellyesque art style.
