Minsk World | theme park.

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

Minsk World is a military theme park located in Dapeng Bay, Shatoujiao, Shenzhen, China.

Minsk World is unique in that the park grounds include the huge former Soviet (later Russian) aircraft carrier Minsk re-designed as a tourist attraction. Admission price is 120 RMB. The theme park opened on May 10, 2000.

A fifth-floor theatre can hold 776 people. The top deck is as large as three football fields. Tour guides dressed in mock-military uniforms educate visitors about two armed helicopters and a Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-23 fighter onboard. Downstairs, a Russian dance group performs folk dances.

The founding company, Minsk World Industries Co. Ltd, defaulted on its loans and went bankrupt in 2006. The ship was placed for auction in May - with no bidders - for $16 million USD. According to the terms of the auction, the owner of the vessel will have to keep it running as a theme park for another five years. The investment arm of D’Long Group owns 89.9 percent of Minsk World. Since it opened in September 2000, the park has attracted more than five million visitors and generated 450 million yuan in revenue. It was said to be profitable.

Something About the Way You Look Tonight | the albums Elton John’s

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

“Something About the Way You Look Tonight” was the first single from Elton John’s The Big Picture. The single was released as a double A-side single with “Candle in the Wind 1997″.

The video for the song featured actors and actresses from the UK Television programme This Life and is regarded as one of Elton John’s best videos. John has publicly revealed (through his “warts and all” documentary Tantrums and Tiaras) that he finds videos “fucking loathsome” and after the album The Big Picture refrained from appearing in his own videos unless they were cameo appearances.

Sales

In the UK only, the single sold over 4,864,600 copies (8x platinum), making the song the best-selling single ever in the history in the UK. It remained five weeks at the number one position. In the United States, the song was considered a double-A-side with “Candle in the Wind 1997″ and spent fourteen weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

Rocket Records | performed by Elton John

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

The Rocket Record Company was a record label founded by Elton John, with Bernie Taupin, Gus Dudgeon and Steve Brown among others, in 1972. The name is from the hit, “Rocket Man”. The label, originally distributed in the UK by EMI and in the US by MCA Records (which Elton John was also signed to.) The first artists signed to the label were Stackridge, who completed two albums for Rocket after moving from MCA. It also became the home of Cliff Richard, Neil Sedaka, Colin Blunstone, The Hudson Brothers, Blue, Kiki Dee and the Dutch band Solution. After Elton John left his British label, DJM Records in 1976, his records were also released on the Rocket Records label on both sides of the Atlantic.

In the US and Canada, Elton John’s residency on his own label was short-lived. After only one album, Blue Moves, and a couple of singles (including the mega hits “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” and “Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word”) he returned to MCA. This might have been due to MCA dropping Rocket, resulting in the label’s move to RCA distribution. The label was discontinued in the US in the early 1980s, then relaunched in 1995 with Elton John’s Made in England album, distributed by Island Records. 1997’s The Big Picture and “Candle in the Wind” were distributed in the US by stepsister A&M Records.

In the UK, Elton John’s records were continuously on Rocket from 1976 onwards. In 1978 the distribution moved to Phonogram Records, then to Mercury Records in 1995. By this time, Elton John was the only artist on the label.

Worldwide ownership of Elton John’s music was consolidated when MCA Records’ then-parent Seagram bought out PolyGram, the owners of Island, Mercury, and A&M - in 1998.

In 1999, when Rocket was being distributed by Universal Music’s daughter Island Def Jam Records, the label was shut down. However, the logo still appeared on all new Elton John releases through 2004’s Peachtree Road. The name was also resurrected in 2006 for the eponymous Platinum Weird album.
