Explosimeter | External

Wednesday, December 26th, 2007

An explosimeter is a device which is used to measure the amount of combustible gases present in a sample. The device operates on the principle of resistance proportional to heat — a wire is heated, and a sample of the gas is introduced to the hot wire. Combustible gases burn in the presence of the hot wire, thus increasing the resistance and disturbing a Wheatstone bridge, which gives the reading.

A flashback arrestor is installed in the device to avoid the explosimeter igniting the sample external to the device.

The One Where Ross and Rachel Take a Break | Ho! Who’d Be

Thursday, December 6th, 2007

“The One Where Ross and Rachel Take a Break” is the fifteenth episode of season three of the television situation comedy Friends.

First aired: February 13, 1997

Plot

Phoebe decides to give free massages outside of the United Nations building, and meets a foreign diplomat named Sergei. Trouble is, Sergei doesn’t speak English, so his translator Mischa keeps “getting in the way.” Desperate for some alone time with Sergei but still have a translator around, Phoebe convinces Monica to come to dinner with them as Mischa’s date. Mischa and Monica hit it off so well that Mischa keeps forgetting to translate for Sergei, and starts fighting with Sergei. He eventually quits and takes Monica along with him to use his diplomatic coupons at the Rainbow Room. Phoebe then tries to teach Sergei English - with minimal success.

Rachel has to cancel on her and Ross’s one-year anniversary plans since she has to work late hours - as she had to every night for two weeks. Ross cannot understand why Rachel cannot make time for him. He surprises her at the office with a complete picnic set. As Ross starts a small fire on Rachel’s desks, she angrily orders him to wait for her at home. Later at the apartment Ross complains about Rachel working late hours. Also, he is afraid of Rachel having an affair with her co-worker Mark. Rachel, however, is not willing to deal with Ross’s jealousy and to have the same fight over and over again. She suggests taking a break. Ross thinks she wants to stop fighting and suggests getting frozen yogurt. But Rachel tells him she wants to take a break from their relationship, which leads Ross to leave.

Chandler and Joey get invited to a club by Chloe, the hot girl at the Xerox place whom they are both trying to hit upon. She invites them to come see her co-worker Isaac the DJ, and also makes a joke about they all having a three-some. Joey and Chandler then set up some loose “ground rules” in the event that she should agree to a threesome with them. A distraught Ross ends up meeting them at the club. He feels bad about his fight, and calls Rachel to apologize - but assumes the worst when he hears Mark (who’d gone over to comfort her) in the background. Chloe, who has always admired Ross, asks him to dance, and they end up kissing.

Christmas creep | christmas party favors

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

Christmas creep is the commercial phenomenon of merchants and retailers exploiting the commercialized status of Christmas (see Christmas season) earlier and earlier every year. It is most often attributed to the desire of many merchants to take advantage of particularly heavy Christmas-related shopping well before Black Friday in the US and before Halloween in Canada and the UK. It can apply for other holidays as well, notably Valentine’s Day, Easter and Mother’s Day. The key for holiday creep is for retailers to lengthen their selling season for seasonal merchandise in order to maximize profit and to give early-bird shoppers a headstart on that holiday.

MaxDrive | Other versions It

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

The MAX Drive is a video game accessory by Datel, maker of the Action Replay, which allows the transferring of saved games between a video game console and a PC. It consists of a USB memory stick, a PC CD-ROM with software, and a disc containing the console software. There are both Xbox and PlayStation 2 versions, as well as versions with varying sizes of memory cards. Saved data exported to the computer appears as normal files, so can be transferred to other users and then back to the PlayStation 2 or Xbox. Other user created content such as GameFace data can likewise be easily transferred.

There was also a version of the MAX Drive for the GameCube console, but this has since been discontinued. Unlike the other two versions, the GameCube version was not a USB stick. Instead, it was similar in design to a normal GameCube memory card, but with a port in the back that accepted an included USB cable.

Elton Dean | Elton John released

Friday, September 7th, 2007

Elton Dean (born October 28 1945, Nottingham, England; died February 8 2006) was a jazz musician who performed on alto saxophone, saxello (a variant of the soprano saxophone) and occasionally keyboard.

From 1966-67, Dean was a member of the band Bluesology, led by Long John Baldry. The band’s pianist, Reginald Dwight, afterward combined Dean’s and Baldry’s first names for his own stage name, Elton John.

Dean established his reputation as a member of the Keith Tippett Sextet from 1968 to 1970, and in the band Soft Machine from 1969 to 1972. Shortly before leaving Soft Machine he started his own group, Just Us. From 1975 to 1978 he led a nine-piece band called Ninesense, performing at the Bracknell Jazz Festival and similar events. His own groups since then, usually quartets or quintets, have most often worked in the free jazz mode, with little or no pre-composed material. At the same time, he has continued to work with other groups that are very composition-based, such as guitarist Phil Miller’s In Cahoots, drummer Pip Pyle’s Equipe Out, and various projects with former Soft Machine bassist Hugh Hopper.

In 2002, Dean and three other former Soft Machine members (Hugh Hopper, drummer John Marshall, and guitarist Allan Holdsworth) toured and recorded under the name Soft Works. With another former Soft Machine member, guitarist John Etheridge, replacing Holdsworth, they subsequently toured and recorded as Soft Machine Legacy, playing some pieces from the original Soft Machine repertoire as well as
