Castle Hedingham Ware | performed by Elton

Sunday, January 20th, 2008
Castle Hedingham Ware An art pottery studio founded by Edward Bingham at Castle Hedingham, Essex, in the United Kingdom. This pottery was in production from 1864 to 1901 and made medieval and Tudor type wares. Bingham produced some massive wares, with ‘Essex’ jugs up to three feet high being typical. Bingham also made many colourful and vivacious pots of average size, frequently mimicking the medieval revival style.

The pottery had a raw quirkyness and is often compared with “Elton Ware” pottery made by Sir Edmund Elton of Clevedon Court in Somerset at about the same time. Elton however was more adventurous with his materials however, and experimented with a type of coloured clay known as slip, as well as specialist glazes including a striking development of the craquel glaze technique common in contemporary ceramics. Castle Hedingham pottery was less refined in its finish. Of all the main art studio potteries of the latter part of the 19th century (the others include Martin Brothers), Castle Hedingham was comparatively neglected.

Back Door Santa | it was originally released

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

Back Door Santa” is a song originally performed by Clarence Carter and released on a compilation album Soul Christmas in 1968. The track is in a 12-bar blues format.

The lyrics are sexually suggestive, not having much to do with Christmas as a holiday. Run-D.M.C. sampled the song for “Christmas in Hollis”. A cover was released by the band Jet in late 2003 on the single “Rollover DJ”.

In late December 2006, The Black Crowes released a free download version of this song, complete with a horn section. This track can be heard in the film Mission: Impossible III.

The song also appeared on the CBS sitcom “How I Met Your Mother.” Season 2 Episode 11: “How Lily Stole Christmas”

Krewe of Tucks | Parade

Friday, December 28th, 2007

The Krewe of Tucks is an organization that parades during New Orleans Mardi Gras, on the Saturday before Mardi Gras. It is known for its irreverence and satirical floats, including the King’s Throne, a giant toilet.

Tucks began in 1969 as a group of Loyola University students. The club takes its name from Friar Tuck’s, an Uptown New Orleans pub where two college students decided to create their own Carnival krewe after unsuccessfully trying to become white flambeaux carriers. The parade has grown from a small nighttime parade of pick-up trucks into a procession of major proportions. In 1983 the parade became a daytime event and in 1986 the parade route finally stretched to downtown. Past Kings include John Candy and Eugene Levy.

The Tucks parade begins on Napoleon Avenue, runs down St. Charles Avenue, and ends on Canal Street where the post-parade blowout, the Tucks Extravaganza, kicks into high gear. This huge party is open to the public by paid admission. Past performers include the Funky Meters, Dr. John, Irma Thomas and The Rascals.

Even though the club has grown in size and stature, Tucks has not lost its sense of humor and maintains its “Animal House” reputation .

The Krewe of Tucks Motto: “Booze, Beer, Bourbon, Broads”
