Copy stand | stand-alone

Sunday, February 3rd, 2008

In photography, a copy stand is a device used to copy images and/or text with a camera. The stand consists of a board onto which the media is placed and a tripod-mount parallel to it, usually with an adjustable height. Light is provided by bright lamps mounted on either side of the media at forty-five degree angles. This provides uniform lighting and reduces specular reflection, keeping glare low.

In film cameras, copy stands are traditionally used with slide film. The fine resolution of slide film allows the images to be reproduced with high fidelity when they are projected.

Reprography

Copy stands can be used for reprography (that is, to copy documents). To do so, the camera is mounted, usually with a standard 1/4″ tripod-mount screw, onto the stand, pointing the lens down at the base, where the document to be copied would be placed.

Forensics

Copy stands can be used in forensics to photograph evidence, in much the same way documents are reproduced. Evidence is brought to the lab, placed on the copy stand and recorded. Some copy stands designed for forensic use have ultraviolet light sources on them, to illuminate latent fingerprints.

Sadberge | Be Continued and The

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

Sadberge is a village in borough of Darlington and ceremonial county of County Durham, England. It is situated between Darlington and Stockton-on-Tees. The village of Sadberge was once the Wapentake (capital) of the Viking settled area north of the Tees known as the Earldom of Sadberge which stretched from Hartlepool to Teesdale. Wapentakes were found in parts of England settled by Danes and continued to be important administrative centres through to medieval times. The word wapentake literally translated means `Weapon Taking’ and refers to the way in which land was held in return for military service to a chief.

Sadberge is a name of Viking origin deriving from Setberg, meaning `flat topped hill’, - an accurate description of the location of the village from where good views of the surrounding countryside can be obtained. The place name Setberg from which Sadberge derives also occurs in Norway and in Viking settled Iceland. Closer to home in Norse settled Cumbria we may find the village of Sedbergh near Kendal which has the same meaning.

In Norman times the Earldom of Sadberge, though north of the River Tees, was not part of Durham and was not initially under the rule of Durham’s Prince Bishops. Instead, it formed an outlying part of the county of Northumberland by virtue of the fact that it had been part of the old Kingdom of Northumbria.

In 1139 Northumberland was given to Scotland by England’s King Stephen and the River Tees became the southern boundary of the kingdom of Scotland. This situation continued until 1157 when Northumberland was reclaimed by Henry II.

Hugh de Puiset, was largely responsible for the decline in importance of Sadberge. He added the earldom to Durham in 1189 and from then on Sadberge was ruled from Durham. Sadberge retained some independence and continued to be administered as an almost separate county until 1576. Until their abolition in 1971 the Palatine courts were a part of the “County Palatine of Durham and Sadberge”.

Further information about Sadberge can be found at http://www.sadberge.org.uk.

Uesugi Zenshū | Continued and

Monday, January 7th, 2008

(died 1417), also known as Uesugi Ujinori’, was the chief advisor to Ashikaga Mochiuji, an enemy of the Ashikaga shogunate in feudal Japan. When he was rebuked by Mochiuji in 1415, and forced to resign, Zenshū organized a rebellion.

Zenshū received aid for his rebellion from nearly half the daimyo in the northern and eastern provinces, and took Kamakura. Mochiuji was forced to flee the city. However, despite pursuing similar goals to those of the shogunate (bakufu), Zenshū was still rebelling against his lord, and so the bakufu had no choice but to send troops to stop him. In 1417, Zenshū and his allies found themselves surrounded. They fled to Kamakura’s Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine, where Zenshū committed seppuku.

The rebellion did not end with Zenshū’s death, however, and neither did Mochiuji’s opposition to it. For more than five years, Mochiuji continued to attack Zenshū’s allies, including the Oda clan, Takeda family, and nobles of Musashi Province. Anger towards Mochiuji and his office only continued to grow, until the bakufu took action to stop him in 1423.

Osgoode Main Street | main

Monday, December 17th, 2007

Osgoode Main Street is the name of a street in the city of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Until recently it was known as Main Street. The name was changed however to Osgoode Main Street so as not to confuse it with the Main Street located a little closer to the city centre. Osgoode Main Street is actually located in the Town of Osgoode, Ontario, but is within the City of Ottawa jurisdiction due to a recent amalgamation. This consequently resulted in its name change. Osgoode Main Street serves as the Main Street of Osgoode, and it is also known as Ottawa Road #114. It runs from River Road in the west to Stagecoach Road in the east. The eastern junction is in the community of West Osgoode, Ontario (which ironically is east of the town of Osgoode).

Raffles, Gentleman Thug | the ‘Bollocks to

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

Raffles, Gentleman Thug is a comic strip featured in adult comic Viz featuring a nineteenth-century nobleman given to ‘immense erudition and wanton violence’. The basic premise is a nod/ripoff of E. W. Hornung’s Raffles the Thief character, the main difference being that this Raffles is very much a 21st century hooligan despite his use of Victorian language.
The strip parodies British yob culture, placing modern day situations in a Victorian/Edwardian setting, and Raffles himself uses antiquated or formal words in very informal or modern situations.

For example:

  • ‘Bollocks to this’ becomes ‘Testicles to this’
  • ‘Fuck this shit’ becomes ‘Fornicate this ordure’
  • ‘Kick the little bastard’ becomes ‘Lapidate the little illegitimate’
  • ‘Tits oot for the lads’ (tag line of Viz character Sid the Sexist ) becomes ‘Remove your decollétage from its corsetry for the delectation of the gentlemen present’
  • ‘Fanny magnet’ (when describing his new automobile) becomes ‘Vaginal lodestone’
  • ‘You big girl’s blouse’ becomes ‘You sizable ladies chemise’

Raffles has found himself in many situations featuring famous characters and events from the 19th century and early 20th century:

  • Playing cricket against the world famous W. G. Grace, cheating him and then beating him up in the toilets
  • Knocking out the Elephant Man, Joseph Merrick during a visit to a fairground freak show after accusing him of “looking at his bird”
  • Travelling on the RMS Titanic and then disguising himself as a woman so he can board a lifeboat. Without booking passage, Raffles bluffed his way aboard the Titanic by claiming to know the captain. When a sailor challenged Raffles to identify the captain by name, Raffles bluffed “Erm, Smith” and was told “Welcome aboard”. (The captain’s name was Edward Smith.)
  • Fighting in WW1, bullying war poet Rupert Brooke and acting like a football hooligan during the 1914 Christmas Truce
  • Attending a party at Clarence House in which he gets into an argument with King Edward VII , resulting in the King being slashed across the face with a cut throat razor
  • Pushing in the front of a Taxi queue after a night out only to be beaten to a pulp by ‘Lords Ronnie and Reggie of Kray’
  • Being brutally beaten by Oscar Wilde after insulting his companion.

Raffles is always accompanied by his loyal friend Bunny and has other acquaintances such as ‘Dave, 6th Earl of Bermondsey’ (a notorious section of South East London) and Clarence, 3rd Earl of Burberry (a reference to Burberry, often stereotyped as the fashion brand of choice for Britain’s ‘chavs’).

Raffles often uses modern-day techniques during his daily escapades - in a recent episode, he broke a wine bottle and stabbed someone with it (today known as “glassing”) and used a Stanley knife to threaten someone into giving him their wallet. In another strip Raffles and Bunny went to visit the Earl of Burberry only to find his house ablaze (Burberry had fallen asleep in front of the magic lantern and left the quail pan on). The fire brigade arrived and were subsequently pelted with rocks by Raffles, Bunny and Burberry.
