Stephen Christmas | Christmas

Friday, February 8th, 2008

Stephen Christmas (12 February 1947- 20 December, 1993) was a 5 year old boy when he became the first patient described to have Christmas disease (or Haemophilia B) in 1952 by a group of British doctors.

Biography

Steven was born to a British family in Toronto, Canada, and was investigated for his severe bleeding disorder in Oxford, where it was discovered that he was not deficient in Factor VIII, which is normally decreased in classic haemophilia, but a different protein, which received the name Christmas factor in his honour (and later Factor IX).

Stephen was dependent on blood and plasma transfusions, and was infected with HIV in the period during which blood was not routinely screened for this virus. He campaigned for transfusion safety ever since getting infected, but developed AIDS, of which he died in 1993.

Spritzgebäck | Christmas

Monday, February 4th, 2008

A spritzgebäck is a type of German Christmas cookie. They are relatively easy to make and require only common ingredients, including eggs, butter, sugar, and flour. When made correctly, they are crisp, fragile, somewhat dry, and buttery.

Spritzgebäck is a common pastry in Germany and served often during Christmas time. During this time, it is not unusual for mothers to spend the afternoons baking with their children for one or two weeks. Traditionally, mothers bake Spritzgebäck after their own special recipes, which they pass down to their children.

Hauksbók | Other versions It

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

The Hauksbók (Book of Haukr) is one of the few mediaeval Norse manuscripts of which we know the author. His name was Haukr Erlendsson (?-1334), and as long back as it is possible to trace the manuscript it has been called the Hauksbók after its author. It was partly written by himself, partly by assistants. The book contains versions, sometimes the only extant versions, of many Old Icelandic texts, such as the Landnámabók, the Fóstbrœðra saga, the Eiríks saga rauða, the Hervarar saga and the Völuspá.

The book contains a section on mathematics of ca 6-7 A4 pages, called Algorismus. This is the oldest text on mathematics in a Scandinavian language. It is probably a translation from Latin into Scandinavian of some pages included in more ancient books such as Carmen de Algorismo by De Villa Dei of 1200, Liber Abaci by Fibonacci of 1202, and Algorismus Vulgaris by De Sacrobosco of 1230.
