The Far Side of Paradise | the B-Side

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

The Far Side of Paradise is a biography of F. Scott Fitzgerald by Arthur Mizener. It was the first biography about Fitzgerald to be published and is credited with renewing public interest in the subject. It dealt frankly with Scott’s alcoholism and his wife Zelda’s schizophrenia.

Edmund Wilson, literary critic and close friend of the Fitzgeralds, later commented that the book’s anecdotes distorted Scott and Zelda’s relationship and personalities for the worse. [1]

The State of the World | The World…Ever!.

Monday, April 7th, 2008

The State of the World is a book published annually since 1984 by the Worldwatch Institute. The series attempts to identify the Earth’s most significant environmental challenges.

In his controversial book The Skeptical Environmentalist published in 2001, the Danish political scientist Bjørn Lomborg called it “one of the best-researched and academically most ambitious environmental policy publications”. Yet it is also criticised for citing short-term trends as portending disaster, which does not come to pass as the long-term trend is decidedly benign. Lomborg gave as examples the predictions on wheat price increases and World trade decreases.

The 1998 through 2003 editions are available as a free (PDF) download from the Worldwatch website.

Songs from the West Coast | Elton John’s Christmas

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

Songs from the West Coast is the twenty-seventh studio album by British singer/songwriter Elton John, released in 2001. Many critics have said that this album brought John back to his piano-based musical roots. He once again collaborated with long-time lyricist Bernie Taupin. John also brought back former band members including drummer Nigel Olsson. This album marks the first time Elton John and collaborator Bernie Taupin wrote together in person, with the results showing maturity and depth. From the album, “I Want Love” was a single and a Grammy nominated song, and “Original Sin” and “This Train Don’t Stop There Anymore” also became hits.

Rufus Wainwright sings backing vocals on the track “American Triangle,” which is about Matthew Shepard, a college student who was murdered because he was gay.

The restaurant shown on the album’s cover is Rae’s Restaurant, which is frequently used as a location for many Los Angeles-based film shoots, including 1993’s True Romance and 2005’s Lords of Dogtown. John’s partner David Furnish and his Director of Operations Bob Halley appear on the album cover: Furnish as a cowboy at the bar and Halley as the man getting handcuffed.

The album was dedicated to Matthew Shepard and Oliver Johnstone, Davey Johnstone’s late son.

Music videos

The music video for the song “I Want Love” featured and only had Robert Downey Jr. in it lip-synching.

The music video for the song “This Train Don’t Stop There Anymore” featured Justin Timberlake portraying a young Elton.

The music video for the song “Original Sin” featured Elizabeth Taylor and Mandy Moore. It also featured John playing the father of Moore’s character and the husband of Taylor’s character. Moore was the center of the video, who plays a huge Elton John fan from the 1970s who is transported by a dream (a la Cinderella) to one of his concerts. Then at the end she wakes up and Elton’s character asks, “Who is this Elton John, anyway?” It also has more of an upbeat dance mix to the music.

Sacraments of the Living | later included as

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

The sacraments of the living are five of the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church which are classified as such because their chief purpose is to give more grace to the souls already spiritually alive through sanctifying grace.

Contents

The Sacraments

Holy Eucharist

The Holy Eucharist brings the fulness of spiritual life through the grace of Christ. This is the central sacrament from which or to which all other sacraments flow.

Confirmation

Confirmation seals the graces of Baptism, thus filling the recipient with full gifts and graces of the Holy Spirit.

Anointing of the Sick

Anointing of the Sick gives the recipient the grace needed to overcome illness and return to a fulfilling Christian life.

Holy Orders

The Holy Orders gives the graces necessary to lead the lay peoples of the Church and fully live out the vocation of priesthood.

Matrimony

Matrimony gives two people the grace needed to live together in harmony and raise Christian children.

Not Included

Baptism

Baptism is not included because it is the sacrament believed to first bring spiritual life.

Reconciliation

Reconciliation is not included because it restores spiritual life to those who have died spiritually through sin.

The Simpsons Forever!: A Complete Guide to Our Favorite Family …Continued | Be Continued

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

The Simpsons Forever!: A Complete Guide to Our Favorite Family …Continued is an episode guide book for the ninth and tenth seasons of the television series, The Simpsons. The book is the first companion to the original The Simpsons: A Complete Guide to Our Favorite Family, and is also published HarperCollins. The Simpsons Forever! is edited by Scott M. Gimple and was released in 1999.

The creator of The Simpsons, Matt Groening, wrote an introduction to The Simpsons Forever!, just as he did with the original book. In his introduction, he claims that the choice was made to publish a second book as opposed to revising and republishing the last edition, to spare consumers from purchasing material they already owned. Groening goes on to describe the format of the book, which, like the last, includes synopses and quotes.

The episodes covered begin with “The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson” and end with “Thirty Minutes Over Tokyo.” The book continues the work of the last edition by listing the times Homer cries “D’oh!” or says “Mmm…”, as well as new couch gags, but it includes unique features as well, including a tribute to Troy McClure, whose character was retired after his voice actor, Phil Hartman, was murdered. The guide also includes the lyrics to the Simpsons-related songs, “Do The Bartman” and “Deep, Deep Trouble.”

The Simpsons Forever! is followed by , which covers the eleventh and twelfth seasons of The Simpsons, and (seasons 13 and 14).
