The Wump World | World

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

The Wump World by Bill Peet is a children’s book about imaginary creatures, known as Wumps. These Wumps look somewhat like a cross between a capybara (sometimes called a water hog) and a moose. The story about these Wumps takes place on their own planet, hence the name The Wump World. A race of blue humanoids named the Pollutians overruns the Wump World, causing the Wumps to flee to the safety of underground caves. The Pollutians leave when the air becomes too polluted, and search for another planet. When the world above grows quiet, the Wumps emerge to find a deserted “concrete jungle”. The Pollutians, having used up every natural resource, have left; but all is not lost, as the book ends with a message of hope about nature’s ability to recover.

The Echoing Green | Merry

Friday, February 1st, 2008

The Echoing Green is a poem by William Blake published in Songs of Innocence in 1789.

The poem follows the structure of a day— ‘the sun does arise’ in the beginning of the first verse, and ‘the sun does descend’ in the middle of the third verse. The poem is the contrast of innocence and experience, but also the contrast between perception of joys and sorrows. What is happening on the Green will happen again, shown by the ‘old folk’ who watch the children and reminisce about their own childhood on the Green. The whole poem is written in 6 sentences with much repetition. The poem could also be attributed to the life of a person— birth, life, death.

Poem text

The Sun does arise,
And make happy the skies;
The merry bell rings
To welcome the Spring;
The skylark and thrush,
The bird of the bush,
Sings lounder around
To the bell’s chearful sound,
While our sports shall be seen
On the Echoing Green.
Old John, with white hair,
Does laugh away care,
Sitting under the oak,
Among the old folk.
They laugh at our play,
And soon they all say:
“Such, such were the joys
When we all, girls & boys,
In our youth time were seen”
On the Echoing Green.
Till the little ones, weary,
No more can be merry;
The sun does descend,
And our sports have on end.
Round the laps of their mothers
Many sisters and brothers,
Like birds in their nest,
Are ready for rest,
And sports no more seen
On the darkening Green

The Muppets at Walt Disney World | Walt Disney

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

The Muppets at Walt Disney World is a television special starring Jim Henson’s Muppets at the Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. This was the last Muppets project that Jim Henson worked on before his death on May 16, 1990.

In it, the Muppets, who have sneaked into Walt Disney World, are pursued by a security guard played by Charles Grodin. Attractions featured include Big Thunder Mountain, the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular!, Star Tours, the Mad Hatter Tea Cups, and World Showcase. The special is notable for making the three parks (Magic Kingdom, Epcot and Disney-MGM Studios) seem like one connected area, despite the parks actually being apart from each other.

The story ends with the Muppets having a friendly meeting at Mickey Mouse’s office where the signature characters of Walt Disney and Jim Henson compare their companies’ theme songs, “When You Wish Upon a Star” and “Rainbow Connection” respectively and the ideals behind them.
