For the Australian indie rock band of the same name, see The Clouds (Australian band).

The Clouds was a Glasgow-based twee pop band from the 1980s.

An earlier band (60s), Clouds, was the first to use the name. Ironically, this band also came from central Scotland.

The State of the World | World

Friday, January 4th, 2008

The State of the World is a book published annually since 1984 by the Worldwatch Institute. The series attempts to identify the Earth’s most significant environmental challenges.

In his controversial book The Skeptical Environmentalist published in 2001, the Danish political scientist Bjørn Lomborg called it “one of the best-researched and academically most ambitious environmental policy publications”. Yet it is also criticised for citing short-term trends as portending disaster, which does not come to pass as the long-term trend is decidedly benign. Lomborg gave as examples the predictions on wheat price increases and World trade decreases.

The 1998 through 2003 editions are available as a free (PDF) download from the Worldwatch website.

Living for the Weekend | weekend and

Friday, December 14th, 2007

“Living for the Weekend” is the fourth single from indie band Hard-Fi; it was released on September 19, 2005, and peaked at number 15 on the UK charts. The video was directed by Scott Lyon.

“Living for the Weekend” has been heavily featured in a Lifestyle Sports commercial in Ireland and a Carling beer commercial in the United Kingdom. It has also been featured on the Winter Olympics Special of BBC’s Top Gear. It also featured in the CSI: Crime Scene Investigation episode “Time of Your Death”.

Sugababes also covered the song, which appeared on their single “Follow Me Home” as well as the Radio 1’s Live Lounge compilation.

History

It began as a demo with Richard Archer’s not long before his band “Contempo” had split up. At this time Steve Kemp (Hard-Fi’s drummer) was drumming for the band. Contempo apparently played the song a couple of times in Portsmouth. The song was then re-recorded with Hard-Fi. The song is a typical Hard-Fi song lyrically, it’s about having no money, having a dead end job and, as the song title suggests, just living for the weekend. It addresses what a drag work can be and other issues in Staines such as having counterfeit clothes (Archer has addressed the sale of fake Burberry various times in interviews).

Talking about the song, Archer said, “It’s a song about when you’ve been working all week, for me and my friends that would probably be in a job you don’t like or enjoy doing, and it gets to Friday and all of that frustration you’ve been through all week is released. The money you’ve earned you spend it to get rid of all that stress, you let your hair down, your life’s your own again, you’re free. Everyone knows what that’s like. You get out there and you see your friends again. It’s like you’ve been released. And are you working to live or living to work.”<ref>http://www.ilikemusic.com/interviews/Hard_Fi_Interview-1768</ref>

The song became one of the bands anthems being used in the media quite frequently from TV Series adverts to, quite appropriately, the Weekender Show on XFM.

The Magical Mimics in Oz | Snow on Main

Sunday, December 9th, 2007

The Magical Mimics in Oz (1946) is the thirty-seventh of the Oz books series begun by L. Frank Baum, and the first written by Jack Snow. It was illustrated by Frank Kramer.

Ozma and Glinda go to meet with the Fairy Queen Lurline in the Forest of Burzee and leaves Dorothy in charge of Oz. During Ozma’s absence, the evil Mimics escape their imprisonment on Mount Illuso and use their magic to take the form of others and attempt to conquer Oz.

Jack Snow was the fourth official chronicler of Oz, succeeding long time Oz illustrator John R. Neill, who had succeeded Ruth Plumly Thompson who in turn succeeded Oz’s creator L. Frank Baum. The two Oz novels written by Snow are controversial because they freely continue the adventures of various Oz characters created by Baum, yet they pointedly omit any appearances by (or even mentions of) the vast range of colorful characters added to the Oz canon by Thompson or Neill. This would seem to indicate that Snow did not consider Thompson a legitimate heir to Baum’s fictional universe, even while Snow was appointing himself Neill’s successor.

The Runaway in Oz was intended to be the thirty-seventh Oz book, but its publication was delayed until 1995, and is perhaps not considered to be within the Oz canon.
