John Reid (music) | albums Elton John’s

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

John Reid is a Scottish manager and music industry figure currently living and working in Australia.

Between 1975 and 1978, Reid was the manager of British rock group Queen and Kevin Ayers. For some 25 years he was the manager of Elton John, but their relationship ended with acrimonious legal action in 2000 [1] over a leaked letter from his accountants detailing Elton’s spending which was found by Benjamin Pell and published in the Daily Mirror.

Reid was known for his sometimes uncontrollable temper, which landed him in jail several times. He has gotten into many highly publicized fights, verbal and physical, with members of the press in an effort to defend clients such as Elton John.

In Australia, he is best known for being a judge on the local version of The X Factor.

Reid is openly homosexual and had a long-term relationship with Elton John.

The Muppets at Walt Disney World | Walt

Monday, December 24th, 2007

The Muppets at Walt Disney World is a television special starring Jim Henson’s Muppets at the Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. This was the last Muppets project that Jim Henson worked on before his death on May 16, 1990.

In it, the Muppets, who have sneaked into Walt Disney World, are pursued by a security guard played by Charles Grodin. Attractions featured include Big Thunder Mountain, the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular!, Star Tours, the Mad Hatter Tea Cups, and World Showcase. The special is notable for making the three parks (Magic Kingdom, Epcot and Disney-MGM Studios) seem like one connected area, despite the parks actually being apart from each other.

The story ends with the Muppets having a friendly meeting at Mickey Mouse’s office where the signature characters of Walt Disney and Jim Henson compare their companies’ theme songs, “When You Wish Upon a Star” and “Rainbow Connection” respectively and the ideals behind them.

Bendigo Easter Festival | Parade

Monday, December 17th, 2007

Contents

The First Bendigo Easter Fair

The first Bendigo Easter Fair was instigated by Burnside and Aspinal to raise funds for the Sandhurst Benevolent Asylum and Hospital. The first fair was held in 1871 and raised over £1000 for this charitable cause. The fair was considered such a success that it has been held every year since, making Australia’s longest continuous running festival. The Festival is held every Easter and throughout its history has varied from one to ten days in duration.

Events

Gala Parade

In 1893 reports in The Weekly Advertiser describe a parade held that included a large and colourful Chinese section that delighted crowds. Since then the Chinese community has supported and been part of the Festival. Today the gala parade features upwards of 100 floats entered by local community groups, schools, emergency services, and businesses. The parade traditionally ends with the large Chinese section. Chinese cultural groups from Bendigo and Melbourne participate in the parade, demonstrating lion and dragon dances. The gala parade is held on Easter Monday each year.

Torchlight Procession

The Torchlight procession is a night-time parade that appeared prior to 1900. It heavily features local emergency services, with local volunteer fire brigade members marching with brass torches. In recent times the parade has ended at Bendigo’s Lake Weeroona where entertainment, activities and fireworks have been held. The Torchlight Procession is held on Easter Sunday each year.

Popular Girl

A fund raising event called “Popular Girl” was held in which well-known local women raised money and in doing so gained “votes” and the person that raised the largest number of votes was crowned the “Popular Girl”. The “Popular Girl” competition is no longer held.

Carnival

Originally held in several locations including Rosalind Park, Bendigo Showgrounds and, more recently, the Bendigo Central Business District, the carnival features a large number of ’sideshow alley’-type attractions and children’s rides.

Chinese Spring Festival and Golden Dragon Museum

The Chinese Spring Festival has been held regularly for many years. It marks the appearance of Sun Loong, the New Dragon, thought to be the World’s longest Imperial Dragon. The Spring festival culminates in the “Waking the Dragon” ceremony that prepares the Dragon for the Gala Parade. Sun Loong first appeared in 1971 and was created to replace Loong. Loong is now not a part of the parade and Both dragons are on display at the Golden Dragon Museum in Bendigo.

New Name, Same Festival

The Bendigo Easter Fair was renamed The Bendigo Easter Festival in 2001. It is still a very popular event attracting over 100,000 people over the four day event.

Give Love on Christmas Day | Christmas

Sunday, December 16th, 2007

“Give Love on Christmas Day” was a Christmas classic soul original by Motown family quintet The Jackson 5. Released to R&B radio in 1970, the song, written by the famed label’s songwriting-producing team, The Corporation, was an ode to everybody to “give love on Christmas” because “no greater gift is better than love.” The song became an oft-covered song in decades to come re-recorded by the kid band that follow the J5’s footsteps, New Edition, for their 1985 Christmas album and was given another overhaul by one of its other members, R&B singer Johnny Gill, in 1990 for an all-star Motown Christmas album. R&B group BlackGirl in 1994 and R&B singer Faith Evans has also covered the song live during a Christmas telecast in 2001. It’s the J5’s and Gill’s versions that are most memorable.

Slow Two step | Step

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

The slow two step is a Latin dance, a round dance rhythm danced to slow, romantic music with either 4 or 6 beats per measure and a tempo of 16–32 measures per minute.

The nightclub two step or California two step was originated by Buddy Schwimmer, Lee and Linda Wakefield, and Ron Montez in the mid 1960s in crowded dance clubs on the West Coast as a dance that could be used for very slow love ballads that are otherwise difficult to dance to. While a more typical slow dance is to simply clutch your partner and sway to a slow tempo, using this for every slow song lacks variety.

The nightclub two step encourages you to draw out a side step and use up some of the “extra” time that way. Schwimmer taught the dance as a quick rock, recover, and then side, or a cross behind, recover, side. Slow two step was introduced to round dancing in the early 1990s by Bill and Carol Goss, but they presented it as a “slow, quick, quick” rhythm, with the side step done first and the rock/recover second. In 1992, they published a cue sheet for Kiehm’s “Are You Still Mine,” and they wrote their own, “Even Now.” Slow two step is slow and flat; there is no rise and fall.

Most choreography is written as though the timing of the figures is “slow, quick, quick,” and if the music is 4/4, that is a good description. If you have a 6/8 piece, however, it would be better to think of the timing as “slow, slow, and”, although even this representation is approximate. Out of the six beats of music, the first step uses three beats, the second uses two, and the last step is just one beat.
