Death to the Extremist | also appears

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

Death to the Extremist is a minimalist webcomic series created by Michael Zole. Initially published in Hampshire College’s magazine The Omen, it has been published regularly online since 2001. The final episode appeared on January 1, 2007.

The strip follows the strange, often music-oriented adventures of two amorphous entities, named One and Two, each of whom is represented only by a quarter circle. The comic is ultra-minimalist and features no artwork, only dialogue and graphics.

Each comic consists of nine cells, often with one or more blank cells in which neither of the characters say anything. Each comic has its own background, and starting with season 4 there is an extra short sentence hidden in light text at the bottom of each image and in the RSS feed.

The font used in the comic appears to come from the Mega Man NES games.

Characters

Neither of the two main characters have any real personalities. They mainly just exist to create a back-and-forth conversation dynamic.

One

One is a black quarter circle, labeled with the numeral ‘1′. He usually appears at the bottom-left corner of the panels in which he appears. Of One and Two, One is reportedly the ‘fan favourite’.

Two

Two is a white quarter circle with a black outline, bearing the label ‘2′. He usually appears in the bottom-right corner of each panel. Two does not have any arms. He is afraid of ponies.

Notable guest appearances

Slither of Steven L. Cloud’s Boy on a Stick and Slither features as a replacement for Two in Episode 41, “Replacement”.
There is later a guest appearance from comedian Bill Hicks (although he looks one helluva lot like Two…) in Episode 257,
“Bill Hicks”.

Hail to the Hills of Westwood | written and performed by

Saturday, June 16th, 2007

Hail to the Hills of Westwood is the school song or alma mater of the University of California, Los Angeles. It was written by Jeane Emerson, a 1929 graduate of UCLA, and adopted by the school in 1960. The current arrangement performed by the UCLA Marching Band was written by band member Dwayne S. Milburn for the 1985 football season.

Until 1925, UCLA shared the University of California alma mater, Hail to California!. “Hail Blue and Gold,” written by a UCLA student in 1925, preceded “Hail to the Hills of Westwood”, and was the school song until 1960.
