Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

Noel! Songs for Christmas - Vol. I is an album of Christmas related songs and carols recorded by independent musician Sufjan Stevens in 2001. It seems that the album was never officially released but rather given away to friends and family during Christmastime. It was followed by two similar releases: Hark! Songs for Christmas - Vol. II in 2002 and Ding! Dong! Songs for Christmas - Vol. III in 2003.

This cd is available as part of the box set Songs for Christmas released by Asthmatic Kitty Records in 2006.

Yuletide Records was a daughter record label of Modern Records, specialized only in Christmas music. Apparently only 9 records were made, somewhere during the late sixties. Their slogan was “Great Sounds of Christmas” but was unsuccessful at producing these sounds. The music and album covers were cheesy at best, and overwhelmingly generic.

Rate-determining step | links Step Into

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

The rate-determining step (RDS) is a chemistry term for the slowest step in a chemical reaction. The rate-determining step is often compared to the neck of a funnel; the rate at which water flows through the funnel is determined by the width of the neck, not by the speed at which water is poured in. Similarly, the rate of reaction depends on the rate of the slowest step.

For example, the reaction <math>NO_{2(g)} </math> + <math> CO_{(g)}</math> → <math>NO_{(g)}</math> + <math>CO_{2(g)}</math> can be thought of as occurring in two elementary steps:

  1. <math>NO_2</math> + <math>NO_2</math> → <math>NO</math> + <math>NO_3</math> (slow step)
  2. <math>NO_3</math> + <math>CO</math> → <math>NO_2</math> + <math>CO_2</math> (fast step)

As the second step consumes the <math>NO_3</math> produced in the slow first step, it is limited by the rate of the first step. For this reason, the rate-determining step is reflected in the rate equation of a reaction.

Another example of a rate-determining step is the formation of a carbo-cation from a haloalkane during the second-order nucleophilic substitution reaction of tertiary haloalkanes with sodium hydroxide.

The concept of the rate-determining step is very important to the optimization and understanding of many chemical processes such as catalysis and combustion.

In a reaction coordinate, the transition state with the highest energy is the rate-determining step of the reaction.

Tatraplan | Continued

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

The Tatraplan was the model T600 Tatra car.

Post World War II, Tatras continued to be built; the factory was nationalised in 1948 after the Communist takeover. Although production of prewar models continued, a new model, the Tatra T600 Tatraplan was designed in 1946-47 by Josef Chalupa, Vladimír Popelář and Hans Ledwinka. The name of the car celebrated the new Communist planned economy. After two prototypes ‘Ambrož’ (December 1946) and ‘Josef’ (March 1947) it went into mass production in 1948. In 1951, a decision of the state planning department decided that the Tatraplan should henceforth be built at the Skoda Auto plant in Mlada Boleslav, leaving Tatra free to concentrate on trucks. This was quite unpopular with the workforce at both plants, as a result Skoda built Tatraplans for one year only before the model was discontinued in 1952.
Tatraplan had a monocoque streamlined six-seater saloon body of Cd 0.32, air-cooled flat 4 cylinder 1,952cc rear engine. 6,342 units were made, 2,100 in Mlada Boleslav.

Emmi (singer) | released as

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

Emmi is a Finnish singer-songwriter who sings in English. She was born on October 10th, 1979 in Vilppula, Finland. She became famous thanks to her single Breakable, which was released in February 2001. In May 2001 her second single Crashing Down and her debut album Solitary Motions were released. Two other quite well-known songs from that album are Green Car and Solitary Motions. She was nominated as the Best Nordic Act by MTV Europe Music Awards in 2001. However, the award was won by the Danish band Safri Duo.

There are two versions of Emmi’s second album No Nothing. The first one was released only for Finnish market in October 2002. The second one was released for international as well as Finnish market in early 2003. The differences between the versions are the order of songs and the fact that the second version contains two tracks that are not contained in the first version, namely Into The World and World Is Crazy. Conversely, the song Toss Me Down is contained in the first version but not in the second one.

The single Eileen was released in 2005. On October 5, 2005, Emmi’s third album Can Full of Joy was released.

Temper | Chocolate are

Sunday, February 3rd, 2008

Temperare (to mix correctly) is the Latin origin of words like “temperature” and “tempering”; it and “tempo” come, in turn, from tempus (time or season). Thus, the word “temper” can refer (at least informally) to any time- and temperature-sensitive process (as for chocolate tempering or tempered glass), a material’s thermo-mechanical history (including cold work and cryogenic hardening), or even its composition.

Temper may mean:

  • Tempering, in metallurgy, a heat treatment technique for metals and alloys; also a method for producing toughened glass
  • In music, temper describes the method used to tune an instrument to produce a pleasing sound
  • The Well-Tempered Clavier is a composition by Bach making use of well tempered tuning
  • Tempered representation in mathematics
  • Temperament, in psychology, the general nature of an individual’s personality
  • Tempering, in chocolate manufacture, a method of increasing the shine and durability of chocolate couverture
  • A display of anger
  • Temper (band), an American dance music group

Peachtree Road (Elton John album) | albums Elton

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

Peachtree Road is the twenty-eighth studio album by British singer/songwriter Elton John, released in 2004. It was named after Peachtree Road, the northern part of Peachtree Street and the major street in Atlanta, one of the singer’s four homes.

The album art on the front cover is a photograph from a railroad crossing near the western suburb of Douglasville, taken by London photographer Sam Taylor-Wood. Taken in by the American South and given complete artistic freedom, she shot thousands of photos during her week-long trip. It included other towns like Unadilla and Forsyth in Georgia, a place which she says he talks fondly of. While she also visited Peachtree Road in the Buckhead area, she thought it was too busy for the album’s more mellow nature. She picked several photos to present to him, and he picked the one which was used. Other photos from the shoot appear on the back and in the included CD and SACD booklet.

Songs from the album debuted at The Tabernacle in Atlanta in early November.

Despite its generally positive reviews, Peachtree Road was one of John’s leanest-selling contemporary efforts, reaching #17 US upon its release, yet only managing #21 in the UK, making it one his rare albums to miss the Top 10 in his homeland.

The album was re-released in 2005 with bonus tracks from Elton John’s Billy Elliot the Musical.

It was dedicated to the memory of Gus and Sheila Dudgeon.

Track listing

All songs by John/Taupin, except where noted.

Walt Disney Animation Australia | Walt

Monday, January 21st, 2008

Walt Disney Animation Australia, also known as DisneyToon Studios Australia is an animation studio from Australia that has worked on both feature length Disney films and television series since its debut in 1988. One distinct trait about the studio is the attention to facial expressions, mouth movements, and excellent timing on sight gags, combined with much more in between animation than you would normally see on an animated TV show. As such, episodes of such series as Darkwing Duck or Bonkers done by Walt Disney Australia usually have a much higher quality than episodes from the Korean studios like Sunwoo Entertainment.

Walt Disney Australia has done animation/ink & paint for the following shows:

  • Aladdin (TV series)
  • Bonkers
  • Darkwing Duck
  • Goof Troop
  • Hercules (1997 movie)
  • The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
  • Timon and Pumbaa
  • Quack Pack

In addition, they have worked on most every theatrical film to date, including many made-for-video projects. An interesting bit of trivia is that Walt Disney Australia animated the first half hour of The Return of Jafar, while the second half was animated by Walt Disney Animation Japan. The differences in the two studios’ styles are clearly evident when watching the film.

Though the studio did a large amount of work in television during the 1990s, they have begun to focus entirely on film, under the DisneyToons banner. For current Disney animated series, work is usually outsourced to Rough Draft Studios, Wang Film Productions, Toon City, and Sunwoo, among others. In other words, Disney TV animation is rarely animated by Disney itself anymore.

Disney Australia Peak and Fall

Disney Australia was becoming well known for 2D animation, they were actually the last Disney owned 2D animation studio, according to Steve Trenbirth, who left Disney to form his own company, Mad Cow Pictures two-years before the closing of the Australian Animation Unit. A number of high quality direct-to-video sequels were produced. According to the DVD making of the film segment on Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp’s Adventure the unit was used for saving on production costs. Production would start in the USA and animation done in Australia.

  • The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride
  • The Jungle Book 2′
  • Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp’s Adventure
  • Brother Bear 2
  • The Return of Jafar
  • Return to Never Land
  • Tarzan II
  • Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch has a Glitch
  • Bambi II

On July 25, 2005, it was announced that after the completion of Cinderella III, Walt Disney Australia would shut down.[1] Walt Disney Australia closed in May of 2006.[2]
