Butter cookie | Cookies and Hot

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

Butter cookies, known as Brysslkex, sablès and Dutch biscuits, are unleavened cookies consisting of butter, flour and sugar. They are often categorized as a “crisp cookie” due to their texture, caused in part because of the quantity of butter and sugar. It is generally necessary to chill the dough to enable proper manipulation and handling. Butter cookies at their most basic have no flavoring, but they are often flavored with vanilla and chocolate. They also come in a variety of shapes such as circles, squares and ovals, and appearances, including marbled, checkered or plain. In some parts of the world such as Australia, these are often served around Christmas time.

Resolvability criterion | Other versions It

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

Resolvability criterion can refer to any voting system criterion whose fulfillment by a voting system indicates a low possibility of the latter returning ties as results.

  1. One version of the criterion has the voting system passing if and only if for every (possibly tied) winner in a result, a vote exists, such that when added, makes that winner unique (Nicolaus Tideman).
  2. Another version defines it such that the proportion of profiles giving a tie approaches zero as the number of voters increase towards infinity (Douglas R. Woodall).

Both versions are satisfied e.g. by approval voting, range voting, Borda count, instant-runoff voting, Minimax, plurality, Ranked Pairs [1], and Schulze [2].

Both versions are violated e.g. by Copeland’s method.

Genetic fallacy | Wedding Present

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

The genetic fallacy is a fallacy of irrelevance where a conclusion is suggested based solely on something or someone’s origin rather than its current meaning or context. This overlooks any difference to be found in the present situation, typically transferring the positive or negative esteem from the earlier context.

The fallacy therefore fails to assess the claim on its merit. The first criterion of a good argument is that the premises must have bearing on the truth or falsity of the claim in question. Attacking Faulty Reasoning: A Practical Guide to Fallacy-Free Arguments (Third Edition) by T. Edward Damer, chapter II, subsection “The Relevance Criterion” (pg. 12) Genetic accounts of an issue may be true, and they may help illuminate the reasons why the issue has assumed its present form, but they are irrelevant to its merits. With Good Reason: An Introduction to Informal Fallacies (Fifth Edition) by S. Morris Engel, chapter V, subsection 1 (pg. 198)

According to the Oxford Companion to Philosophy, the term originates in Morris Cohen and Ernest Nagel’s book Logic and Scientific Method.

The State of the World | World

Friday, January 4th, 2008

The State of the World is a book published annually since 1984 by the Worldwatch Institute. The series attempts to identify the Earth’s most significant environmental challenges.

In his controversial book The Skeptical Environmentalist published in 2001, the Danish political scientist Bjørn Lomborg called it “one of the best-researched and academically most ambitious environmental policy publications”. Yet it is also criticised for citing short-term trends as portending disaster, which does not come to pass as the long-term trend is decidedly benign. Lomborg gave as examples the predictions on wheat price increases and World trade decreases.

The 1998 through 2003 editions are available as a free (PDF) download from the Worldwatch website.
