Pipeline Bodysurfing Classic | event hosted

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

The Pipeline Bodysurfing Classic is a bodysurfing competition held annually during the Winter season at the Banzai Pipeline on the North Shore of the island of Oahu in Hawaii.

The goals (and historical precedent) for the Pipeline Bodysurfing Classic are based on the original concept of the North Shore Expressive / Paipo bodysurfing event.

The Pipeline Bodysurfing Classic first ran February 1971 (which preceded the Pipeline Masters, which ran December 1971) see this link about event origin. Therefore, the Pipeline Bodysurfing Classic was the first surfing event at Pipeline (Ehukai Beach Park) on the North Shore of Oahu.

The Event was originally hosted by the Honolulu City Parks Department (to promote water safety and wave consciousness), as a multi-division bodysurfing, handboard and skegless paipo board competition open to both men and women.

Eventually, the event was adopted by the North Shore Bodysurfing Club in Haleiwa, Hawaii.

Currently, the Pipeline Bodysurfing Classic is an event open to all bodysurfers to compete in a world class, judged competition specific to Bodysurfing and uses established judging standards.

Due to problems with the methods used by the City and County of Honolulu; the Pipeline Bodysurfing Classic was denied a contest permit for the surf calendar season 2006-2007. Apparently, the Honolulu City parks department does not have an appeal process. Therefore, the only way to challenge a decision by the Honolulu City parks department is by litigation.

Hiroshi Kyono | the ‘Bollocks

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

Hiroshi Kyono (born March 31, 1969 in Yokohama, Japan) is the vocalist for The Mad Capsule Markets.

Contents

Early years

Kyono claims that in his earlier years he was an MTV junky, in high school he started listening to Japanese punk like Gauze, The Stalin, Inu, and Aburadako. Then he ventured out into overseas punk like Crass and Pop Group. Kyono’s also states that the first record that he bought wasn’t very ‘punk inspired’ as it was Electric Light Orchestra’s Secret Messages <ref>[1]Taken from The Crazy Pill Bazaar Fansite, URL last accessed 04-28-07</ref>. In 1985 he started the Boowy inspired punk group Berrie with his high school friend Minoru Kojima (aka Shin.), and the group later was joined by bassist Takeshi Ueda and Seto. The group first a show in their senior year of school and were ventured out to Tokyo and Shinjuku. His image at this time was very Punk and Glam inspired and would often switch from a loud abrasive punk voice to very melodic.

The Mad Capsule Markets years

After Berrie had opened for the likes of The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Berrie became The Mad Capsule Markets. The early incarnation of mad was still very much Boowy inspired, as Kyono and the band were still very interested in the band. After years of further punk inspired material, the heavy 4 Plugs album was released. This was a big change for Kyono, as he had been listening to the likes of Fear Factory and hip hop music. Kyono’s voice had became slightly gruffer and often rapped than sang, and he sported Skate Boarder-esque clothing and a no longer had long hair. This style (and musical) change was well-received by the fans, and Kyono’s music taste became eclectic over the years.

Recent years

Since the release of OSC DIS, his popularity as a vocalist increased, and he contributed vocals to several of Joujouka’s songs, Sasori’s Sasori and The Crystal Method’s Weapons Of Mad Distotion (which was featured during the Dracula/Blade fight scene in Blade Trinity). When mad was put on hiatus in 31 March 2006 (Kyono announced this on his birthday) Kyono created the WAG DUG unity website which he often posts diary entries of his latest DJ livesets in Japan and working on various other projects, such as the wag dug clothing line. His recent musical activity includes appearing on the Death Note movie soundtrack with a song he contributes vocals to called HAKAI (Deathtroy). This track also features Sid Wilson of Slipknot fame.

Personal life

  • Kyono likes to hang out at a Mangakisa, which are cafés in Japan where you pay on an hourly basis to read manga. Kyono likes comics with manly superheroes rather than more feminine animé.
  • Kyono likes films a lot, mainly psychological thrillers like ‘Scream’ and ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer.’ He also likes Kung Fu movies.
  • Lists some of his favourite albums as ‘Tribute to Volcano’ by Mighty Crown, ‘Never Mind The Bollocks’ by The Sex Pistols, and ‘Iowa’ by Slipknot.

New Project

Kyono has recently formed a new band called Wagdug Futuristic Unity along with the bassist from Ultra Brain, former Hi-standard member, Akihiro Nanba. The band will be releasing its first single Ill Machine in the autumn. The song will also be appearing on the soundtrack for the new appleseed movie, Ex Machina.<ref>Taken from crazy pill bazaars website</ref>

Christmas with the Kranks | Twas’ the

Tuesday, December 25th, 2007

Christmas with the Kranks is a 2004 comedy film produced by Revolution Studios and Columbia Pictures. It is based on the 2001 novella Skipping Christmas by John Grisham. It stars Tim Allen, Jamie Lee Curtis, Dan Aykroyd, M. Emmet Walsh, Elizabeth Franz, Erik Per Sullivan, Cheech Marin, Jake Busey, Caroline Rhea, and Felicity Huffman.

Plot

Box office

  • Kranks grossed more than $21,000,000 on its opening weekend, and went on to gross $73.7m.

Trivia

  • The title of the John Grisham book on which the film is based on, wasn’t used for the film to avoid confusion with another Christmas-themed film, Surviving Christmas (2004).
  • This is the fourth time that Jamie Lee Curtis and Dan Aykroyd have been in a film together. Their three previous movies together were Trading Places, My Girl, and My Girl 2.
  • Many critics panned the movie, causing it to earn a 4% ratingat Rotten Tomatoes. In one example of a harsh review, Roger Ebert and Richard Roeper gave this film “Two thumbs way way down.” Ebert gave the movie one star and called it “a holiday movie of stunning awfulness” in his newspaper review. In addition, it earned a #2 spot on his list of the Ten Worst Films of 2004.
  • M. Emmet Walsh plays one of Tim Allen’s neighbors. Walsh occasionally made guest appearances on Home Improvement as Allen’s father-in-law.
  • Tom Poston plays Father Zabriske. Poston also made a couple of guest appearances on Home Improvement playing Ted in the episode “Thanksgiving“, the clerk in the episode “Twas the Flight Before Christmas“, and Ted’s twin brother Ned in the episode “The Tool Man Delivers.” Tragically it would be one of his last roles before his death in early 2007.
  • Dan Aykroyd was featured once as the Taylor family pastor on the Home Improvement TV series. The episode in which he appeared in was the seventh season episode, “Losing My Religion,” in a rare crossover with Aykroyd’s series at the time, Soul Man.
