Christmas Sunday | christmas party favors

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

Christmas Sunday is a name for 26 December when it is a Sunday.

In the United Kingdom, if Christmas Day falls on a Saturday, 26 December is correctly referred to as “Christmas Sunday”, and Boxing Day moves to 27 December. However, since 1999 common practice has seen 26 December called “Boxing Day” even when it falls on a Sunday.

In Western Christianity, the first Sunday after Christmas is called “the First Sunday of Christmas”.

The christmas sunday is a special time of year for all. It symobolizes the passing of the year.

The Parade, Adelaide | parade down

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

The Parade is an Adelaide road in the eastern suburbs, running East-West connecting the CBD to suburbs such as Norwood. It is more known for its shopping precinct than its role as a transport conduit for the eastern suburbs.

Its shopping precinct in Norwood sees the road turn into a thin, tree lined, four-laned road with various shops, hotels, movie theatres and restaurants on either side. Of note is Norwood Town Hall and the recently built multi-level shopping center. The area around the parade is considered more ‘bohemian’ than the rest of working-class Norwood, with a high percentage of yuppies and students.

A significant landmark on The Parade is Clayton-Wesley Uniting Church on the corner of Portrush Road and The Parade in Beulah Park. The church, visible along the road from Norwood, was built over 150 years ago. The church places, on the spire, a star and cross each year for advent and lenten seasons respectively. These are visible while travelling in an Easterly direction and provide a focal point for the strip.

It is served by the 122, 123, 124 and 125 bus services

S-E-X-X-Y | appears on the

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

S-E-X-X-Y is an EP released in 1996 (see 1996 in music) by musical group They Might Be Giants, in conjunction with their LP Factory Showroom.

Notes

The version of “Sensurround” that appears on this EP is a different recording from the one that appears on the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie soundtrack (which was contributed by They Might Be Giants for the feature).

Studying the lyrics of the title track, “S-E-X-X-Y” appears to revolve around an attractive woman, however one popular interpretation of the track is it is in fact about someone who has Klinefelter’s syndrome - a person with two X chromosomes and a Y chromosome, or possibly about a transvestite. However, They Might Be Giants have claimed that this song is simply an “ode to getting it on.” The song states that “X, because it’s extra, baby. Y, because it’s extra, baby.”, implying S-E-X.

Track listing

  1. “S-E-X-X-Y” (Radio Mix)
  2. “Sensurround”
  3. “Unforgotten”
  4. “We’ve Got A World That Swings”
  5. “S-E-X-X-Y” (The Warren Rigg Microwave Mix)

Mahatma Gandhi Road, Bangalore | Hit Parade II

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

Mahatma Gandhi Road (M.G. Road) in Bangalore, India, was called “South Parade” in British times and renamed post independence. Many Indian cities (including New Delhi and Mumbai) have an M.G. Road, and in general there is no linkage between these various roads (except that in many cases, these happen to be the busiest part of the city).

Commercial

Along with retail stores and food outlets, M.G. Road is also home to a large number of financial institutions like Canara Bank, ING Vysya, Vijaya Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce, Citibank, HSBC, Scotia Bank, BNP Paribas, Standard Chartered, UTI Bank, Deutsche Bank, etc. On its Trinity circle end are located some of the Bangalore’s best hotels like The Oberoi and the Taj Residency. Presently M.G. Road is being improved and prepared for the long-awaited Metro Rail line that connects the eastern part of Bangalore with the west.

Tinsel | to Christmas’ EP. edit

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

Tinsel is a thin metallic strip typically made of plastic for use for Christmas decoration, particularly on Christmas trees. Tinsel is different than Garland, which is “Tinsel on a rope”. It was invented in Germany in 1610, and was originally made of shredded silver.

Tinsel used to include lead, which caused the strands to hang better from the branches. This was eventually removed due to safety concerns.

Bhringi | Continued and The Best

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

According to Hindu mythology, Bhringi (the wanderer) was an ancient sage (rishi), and a great devotee of Shiva, the Hindu God of destruction and rejuvenation. The legend states that he had three legs. According to mythology, all the rishis once paid homage to both Shiva and Parvati, the second consort of Shiva, but Bhringi would not worship Parvati and dedicated himself solely to Shiva. Enraged, Parvati reduced Bringi to a skeleton. In this form he was not able to stand and so Shiva provided him with a third leg. Bhringi remained undaunted, and continued to worship only Shiva. To force him to worship Parvati as well, Shiva transformed himself into his androgynous form of Ardhnarishvar, in which state he was combined with his consort Parvati. Bringi remained undeterred. Transformed himself in a bee, he bored his way through the male part of androgynous Shiva and continued his worship. He generally appears beside Shiva during his cosmic dance of tandava.

Hot Springs Mountain Tower | Cookies and Hot

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

Hot Springs Mountain Tower is a 65.8 metre high observation tower built of lattice steel on Hot Springs Mountain at Hot Springs, Arkansas, USA.
Hot Springs Mountain Tower was built in 1983.

The tower was not the first to be built on the mountain. In the nineteenth century, a 75-foot wooden fire tower was constructed on the site. This tower was later struck by lightning and burned to the ground. The mid-twentieth century saw the construction of a 175-foot steel structure which later proved unstable and was torn down.
