Four Peaks Brewery | Favorites

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

Four Peaks Brewery is an Arizona brewery and restaurant. The original and main location is in an old creamery and warehouse in Tempe, Arizona about 1/2 mile East of the campus of Arizona State University with an additional location now in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The Tempe location also has a small display of Minnesota Viking and Elvis Presley paraphernalia. The brewing equipment is visible in the northern and western sections of this historical property. The building was built in 1892 as an ice plant. The current architecture dates back to 1927 when it was remodelled in a Mission Revival style. It served as a creamery until 1953.

The selection at the brewery varies, but several favorites (Kilt Lifter and 8th Street Ale) are available on tap and in bottles at local bars and restaurants around the region. The brewery usually also has one or more Real ale ready to serve.

If seated inside the brewery itself, one will notice a blackboard listing all the beers and their alcohol content, which currently runs up to 12.0%.

Kilt Lifter

According to the Matt Table of Contents, Kilt Lifter, a local favorite, is 6.0% alcohol.

The brewery also features seasonal ales, including the Leroy Brown, Winter Wobbler and McCarthy Red and in celebration of Halloween, a Pumpkin Porter.

Indian Blues | Who’d Be

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

Indian Blues is a blues style founded in Pune, India. Sagar Sarkar is considered the father of this style, and Contraband are credited as the earliest practitioners of it, while creating the Hippy Scene in Pune during the late eighties to the late nineties.

In a rare late nineties interview about their hedonistic lifestyle, Sagar Sarkar is quoted as saying: “The jams we’d had were centered around three characters: N.C. Kumar, Samuel Wilson and Zubin Balsara. We ran a circuit using little known Pune venues like Nadi-Kinara, Madhur-Milan, Jaws and the private houses of anybody who’d co-operate. Anyone who knew about our venues were free to just carry their booze, gals and tune in! We were joined by many guests at all sessions, including the great JD who’s now into agricultural pursuits in Canada! (Many of y’ll know what I mean!)”

Rare bootlegs of Contraband recordings have been produced by Studio K and are highly valued amongst collectors.

Tree topper | Christmas themed

Tuesday, January 1st, 2008

A tree topper is a decorative star, angel or other item which is placed on the crown of a Christmas tree. The most popular tree topper is the angel, followed by the star. If viewed in a Christian context, the tree topper usually signifies the Christmas Star (Star of Bethlehem) or angelic hosts which proclaimed the news of the birth of Jesus to the world on the eve of his birth. Modern pagan homes celebrate the winter solstice, which falls close to Christmas, by decorating an evergreen tree as a symbol of continuing life, but make an effort to decorate it with non-Christian symbols and often choose tree toppers representing the sun.

Spritzgebäck | Christmas

Friday, December 21st, 2007

A spritzgebäck is a type of German Christmas cookie. They are relatively easy to make and require only common ingredients, including eggs, butter, sugar, and flour. When made correctly, they are crisp, fragile, somewhat dry, and buttery.

Spritzgebäck is a common pastry in Germany and served often during Christmas time. During this time, it is not unusual for mothers to spend the afternoons baking with their children for one or two weeks. Traditionally, mothers bake Spritzgebäck after their own special recipes, which they pass down to their children.

French Revolutionary Wars: Campaigns of 1801 | To Be Continued and

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

The French Revolutionary Wars continued in 1801 with the French bringing the war against the Second Coalition to a close.

By February 9, the Austrians had signed the Treaty of Lunéville, ending the war on the continent. The war against the United Kingdom continued (with Neapolitan harbours closed to her by the Treaty of Florence, signed on 28 March), and the Turks invaded Egypt in March, losing to Kleber at Heliopolis. The exhausted French force in Egypt, however, surrendered in August.

The naval war also continued, with the United Kingdom maintaining a blockade of France by sea. Non-combatants Russia, Prussia, Denmark, and Sweden joined to protect neutral shipping from British attacks, but were unsuccessful. British Admiral Horatio Nelson defied orders and attacked the Danish fleet in harbor at the Battle of Copenhagen, destroying much of the fleet of one of France’s more steady allies during the period. An armistice prevented him from continuing into the Baltic Sea to attack the Russian fleet at Reval (Tallinn). Meanwhile off Gibraltar, the outnumbered French squadron under Linois rebuffed a first British attack under Saumarez in the first battle of Algeciras, capturing a line-of-battle ship. In the second battle of Algeciras, four days later, the British captured a French ship and sank two others, killing around 2000 French for the loss of 12 British.

Joe Christmas | Christmas

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

Joe Christmas is a fictional character, one of the central characters in the 1932 novel Light in August by William Faulkner.

Raised in an orphanage, Joe Christmas knows little about his own identity. While he is presumably both black and white, Joe Christmas appears to be mostly white; in fact, there is no certainty that he is black at all, though he identifies himself as such.
His search for racial identity is central to the work.

His initials allude to Jesus Christ.

One critic described him as the loneliest character in American literature.

House management | ticket event

Monday, October 22nd, 2007

In theatre, house management concerns the selling of tickets, the ushering of patrons in front of house areas, and the maintenance and management of the theatre building itself. House management staff usually work for the theatre, under the supervision of the house manager, and not for the theatrical troupe which is currently occupying it. Often in regional or smaller theatres the responsibility falls under the aegis of the production manager. In any case, house management works closely with the production management team for the presentation of the theatrical production.
